Have a dot at centre ice and take away the red line.

Shootout after 5 minutes of OT.

I think it'd be better if there were no ties. Play the first overtime with 4 players, then take away one player each overtime until there is a winner

If they have too, even take out the goalie.

Seriously - A bigger goal and no red line make sense to me, at least one or the other. I posted the thread because I thought a few of the "suggestions" were funny. Realistically the NHL does need to do something to goose up goal scoring. I have some old game tapes on VHS from the 70's and the goalies back then at least left some room for the puck to get through. These guys in today's NHL goal creases are practically bullet-proof.

Martin Brodeur recently.

Take away the instigator rule. Alot of goals Wayne Gretzky scored was because he had an enforcer protecting him.

Wil,

Any idea what the common puck totals were back then?

Were they 4.5/5/5.5?

Come to think of it, very few 6s on the board in the last couple of years. Never seen a 6.5/7, but maybe back then.

Bases good question. Betting on NHL games has gained popularity little by little since the early 80's. Today hockey is by far the least popular of the team sports betting wise. Naturally football is king, then imo. hoops, baseball, and then hockey. I can remember living back East and locals using split totals. For example Rangers Vs. Bruins the line might be 1-1.5 and the total 5.5-6, If you wanted the favored Bruins you laid a goal and a half, and took a goal with the dog (Rangers) some small time books even attached juice. Same with the totals you had to bet under 5.5 and over 6. Tuff to beat to say the least. Totals of 6 and even 6.5 were common in the 70's and 80's.

Occasional value in a puck line for sure.

As for the split total thing,

WWTS still uses this system for hockey...could never understand why...must not want any hockey action at all?

All they need to do is crack down very hard on the obstruction (and not just sometimes).

If you let "defensive" (ie holding) teams like NJ get away with it then they will ...

top this with a brilliant goaltender and you have a 1-0 snoozer.

Aside from that I'd go with the Olympic rules - bigger ice, automatic icing.
