I'm sure many will direct you to me with this post, so I will chime in.
If you are going to college, there are much more lucrative careers than in the Vegas sports industry. If you really feel you want to accept a near minimum wage job in a work environment where you are dealing with those well below your education level and in a business that is declining, then please look me up.
I will echo that and add being a sports fan and working in the industry are very far apart. For me, the more I have worked in it, the less of a fan I have become. I dont even care to bet at this point anymore.
Do not get me wrong, you can make a career of it, it just takes a long time and you need to know the right people at that. In fact I am mentoring someone in the buisness right now whom came here under your same circumstance and is finding the out the truth of what GD said.
He will be going to get his sports managment masters at UNLV this spring and will work the job he has now for what it is. He is no longer wanting to really work behind the counter like he thought.
Its a tough life and you see a lot of ugly things. Not all the time mind you, but it adds up and takes it toll. BIG TIME.
You may want to pull up my sportsbook stories from the 90's thread and read it for further insights. Just do a fourm search using Sportsbook stories, just like I just typed it. My could you live this life from the bottom up is right there with it.
