I had a buddy ask me and I honestly had no idea. I saw online and a lot of places were saying 2-4 months of your salary.... which seems crazy expensive to me. Id be all about getting something nice, but spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a ring seems crazy to me and a waste of money you could put towards a house or a bunch of other things.... hard to believe you couldn't get a nice ring for around $1500 or so...

I dated a rich girl (parents have a plane rich) and she told me she would take a 3 Carat cubic zirconia. I thought that was pretty cool.

Ask around and buy from an actual broker as opposed to a storefront. You need to ask around though so you know you can trust them.

my wife picked out a ring at the first store we went to and we were able to get the exact same setting from the broker and then hand pick the center diamond for it. It ended up being really expensive but still a good bit less than I would've paid if retail. Got insurance on it and the appraised value is twice what I paid. It is the one item your wife will wear every day and have to show all of her friends.

Spent twice what I wanted to but have never really regretted it. I'm the kind of guy that doesn't mind splurging on the big purchase but hate renewing the small $300 or so in insurance on it. I know the second I cancel the insurance, she'll lose it.

Paid $8K in 2006.
Had it designed and independently appraised for $15K.
No questions asked by anyone.

Wifey lost it last year. Insurance paid $15K no questions asked.
Wifey just found it a few months ago.
We then turned it in to the insurance company no questions asked.

We haven't replaced it yet.

So wedding rings are +ev in my book!

society and business has brainwashed people to thinking that spending lots of $ on a ring somehow equates to a greater love for your woman. I am not judging anyone that does spend some serious coin on a tiny rock from the ground don't get me wrong, but to me its a waste of money.

Engagement rings are one of the biggest scams going.

Diamonds do not appreciate in value.

That said, spend what you're comfortable with. The diamond is a reflection on you.
