Wolfie just said in the other thread about the aprtment that his electric bill was $1800 a year. A guy I work with lives in escazu. Normal house 3-4 bedrooms no pool or anything and his electric bill is $200 a month. I live in a 2 bedroom house and I got a $180 dollar electric bill several months in a row. There is no way I'm using that much power. I had them come out and look at the meter and they said it was fine. Funny it broke 2 days later and have been getting free power for the last few months. Is it true that in certain areas people pay more for electricity? How much do you guys pay a month for electric?

I live in escazu. I used to pay around 55k a month (I have a decent sized ac unit). The last few months it jumped to around 95k a month with no change in usage. I have no idea why.

Yeah mine was around 38k per month then jumped to 89k for no reason. Thank god the meter froze a few months back and they have only been charging me 1500 a month. I've talked to several people and they have had the same experience wit ha sudden jump in their bill. A 50k colone jump isn't subtle wonder what the reason is.

I was paying 9-10 K at my last place with a fan running or two running 24/7, but then again my wife is very energy effecient, always running around unplugging unused stuff and turning off lights, ect. But still, it looks like you are getting scammed dude.

My electricity jumped from c65k/mo to c90k/mo purely as a rate hike, no usage increase. ESPH-SA ~900-1100 KWH/mo

More annoying is just this year I found out how to pay that online via credit card at www.esph-sa.com, but they won't accept payment for any bill over c75k! Thank god I also just recently opened a Banco Nacional account, now I can finally pay that bill without hassle.

BTW, the national banks suck dogshit, but their online SINPE service is so much better. BAC stops same day service at 3:30pm and always seems to take 30-60 minutes, BNCR until 6pm and is practically instant.

But BNCR International Wire transfers come in without any details what-so-ever (sender, memo, etc), WTF!

There is a reduction in rates coming soon (Esentially they billed us all for quite a while with rates figured out when the oil price was sky high)

I pay 70k colones......

I have a minisplit in the bedroom that normally runs every night
electric dryer
two fridges
three computers running almost all the time
electric stove

if I had a gas stove/dryer I am sure it would not be so horrible

I just installed a timer on the water heater tank......the bill better comes down a LOT (the stupid timer was 50k colones!)

I am surprised you havent got a visit from CNFL (if that is the power provider in your area)

when my bill goes up/down too much (too much cooking/cleaning or wife or I or both leave on trips) they always stop by to

a) figure if something is wrong

b) figure if you are trying to bypass the meter ROFL

Same story here. We live in Escazu and normally pay 25-30 k per month. This month was 48 and we definitely used less electricity. Watching TV with no lights on, etc.

Went to CNFL to ask about the meter and told us there was a 30 % jump in rates. Still doesn´t add up and we know we cut our kw usage.

Seems it is a very imperfect system. I have noticed that usually the month after a very high bill the next month seems unusually low. May be meter readers who just put down a guess without really checking the meter.

So did everyone iN CR get a 30% rate hike or is it only in certain areas like Escazu or Santa Ana etc? Can't see how if everyone got a 30% hike people wouldn't be out protesting this BS.

Funny you mention that. They have come to the house about 5 times to cut and turn on the neighbors power. Their meter is next to mine and they havent even bothered to look at it.
