You are already paying them to cut your hair, and they get a tip for doing their job. Seems like everyone in the US gets a tip. In some cases its justified, but to me it makes no sense in this situation.
You can get a really good haircut here in CR for $15 and no tip, where they wash your hair a couple of times, a little scalp massage, and a beverage while you wait. Last haircut I got in the US was $40 + tip.
