Of the people who take a break, I think 98% of the time it is dictated by their financial situation.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

I try to take a break after NBA Finals end until mid August. Do you think it has anything to do with my financial situation? The reasons for it are numerous. The opportunities for my type of capping, investing are very thin. Bases is good if you like scalping, but tough to middle, and win at consistently. But mainly, my two sports are Football and Basketball. They are what I excel in. I work the seasons, then take my extended break, from everything. Even off of computers. When I start ramping up I am fresh, both mentally and physically. It makes a lot of difference if you rely on being sharp mentally. One change I will implement next year is a midseason break. Just after Super Bowl. Football is a cooker for me, intense pressure. I will take sometime off. Right after super bowl. Next year my goal is Costa Rica. Fish, hike, fish and party. I figure two weeks would be good. Also, the break has nothing to do with win/loss. If I stink it up, I take the time off, if I have my best winning streak ever going, I take the time off. To be honest, I go through withdrawal, depression and adjustment. This is where you are most vunerable to chemical/alcohol abuse to replace the high. Luckily I kicked that shit long ago. Now I surround myself with my kids and my wife. You know, the mail order wife I like to slap around. Maybe we take a family trip. But after going through that, I am practically foaming at the mouth to start football. My enthusiasm is peaking, I am mentally fresh and ready to tear it up. Frog rating on voluntary break, Benjamin...Best wishes...OF

Almost inevitably at this time of year both me and my bankroll seem to get slowly and insidiously worn down by bases. Just went below the Mendoza line for bases this past weekend. This was one of the reasons I stopped posting plays. The slide had begun and was recognizable to me.

Deja Vue all over again from last year and years past also. I just seem to get worn out. Age may be a factor I realize.

Last year for the first time, I took off more than a week or at most two. I took almost two months off at almost exactly this time of year. Came back strong and refreshed for the tailend of bases, more than just recouped my still small bases losses and slid into a very good foots season. I began again just a week or two before registering here.

While what we do is enjoyable, the constant grind [possibly even the posting] does take its toll and IMO to OPTIMIZE success we need to take time off. The amount of time may differ for each individual. Seems for me it may now require a summer break the duration of which is analagous to a summer break in a school year for teacher or student. Now is the operative word here however.

While my friend Fishhead I'm quite sure would feel otherwise, it may simply be a case of whatever floats your boat best.

I have determined scientifically that the best time to take a break from gambling is when I have no more money to wager with. At that point, I quit betting until I get some more money to bet with.

i'm like frog.

i suck at (major league) baseball and so therefore i rarely bet it.

because of that - i usually take off the entire month of july. no betting, no research, no nothing. since there is only baseball (and wnba) to bet - it's not like i am missing something important (to me).

once the CWS is done - i'm outta here for about 1 month. this gives me time to get away from it all and get the batteries charged up in time for football.

i've done this for the past handful of years and it is something i heartily suggest everyone do.

ditto for me EXCEPT, One thing is that I do have a local here in town who deals a DIME LINE, however it is always -110/-120/-130/-140 etc etc, he never goes to -105/-107/-124 style odds.... Same thing on Totals he is -110 on either side & never adjusts the VIG...

Also, He opens at 6PM & Closes at 7PM but never adjusts his ODDS which he picks up at 530pm....

All this to say that there are Plenty of SCALP opportunities with LOW VIG shops like PINNY or SIRBET.

So I am taking a break on wagering, howevwer I will keep some BOOKS funded & will SCALP what I can between 6pm & 7pm with the LOCAL...

INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: My Local often Heavily OverExagerates the FAVORITES...So Obviously I bet MOSTLY Dogs with My Local & Favorites Offshore...That being said I have Lost WAY MORE so far this year betting DOGS with the LOCAL than I have betting FAVORITES, OFFSHORE.

Seems Peculiar, probably just a Coincidence...Personally I dont Care as I have been making about 40$ a day risk free doing this for a few minutes of WORK...& it is always good to keep the LOCAL happy...as I have to meet him once a week...
icon_biggrin.gif

MORAL OF THE STORY: it is always good to have a few LOCAL's in your arsenal of outs...ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE OLDSCHOOL & KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE INTERNET...MY LOCAL HAS NEVER EVER TOUCHED A COMPUTER...LOL...

I took quite some time with several breaks to write what I did above and The Frog's post was not yet up when I started. He is very correct about the difficulty in regard to withdrawal symptoms.

As I have documented here too many times already, I bought a cheap stock car last year to play around with to ease the withdrawal. Hardly what one would do if up against the wall financially though is it?

As I type this I am wondering what the replacement will be this year. Quite possibly several months at the mountain hideaway. Great Smoky Mountain hiking, river rafting and such, but for the first summer, I have no computer up there. Rest the brain and work the body and make the next wager at the Golden Nugget in mid August. Sounds doable.

Oh...Another Exception is that the REGULAR SEASON of the CFL starts this weekend...

Betting OVER's in the CFL is like 'taking candy from a baby'.... well okay...not that easy, but easy nonetheless.....

I have often stated in my threads on these forums that my wagering year begins with the start of NFL Preseason and concludes with the completion of the NBA Finals. Not unlike Frog. I don't wager on either the NHL or MLB as the former, I am not really interested in and the latter is too long of a grind on a daily basis throughout a long season. I will however wager once the MLB playoffs begin in October. Upon the completion of the NBA Finals and prior to the beginning of NFL Preseason, I use the time to both freshen up as well as study and prepare in depth for the upcoming college and pro football seasons. By doing this, I find that I am both refreshed and prepared once football season begins. Generally, I will maintain my focus on football through the completion of the both the college regular and bowl seasons as well as the completion of the pro regular season before shifting my attention to college hoops. Thus around early January, when conference hoops play begins and the NFL Playoffs are under way, my attention gradually moves towards college hoops, although this year I started a bit early and will not do that again. Focus on the NBA begins in earnest upon the completion of March Madness as the playoff stretch drive is in full swing and the intensity level of nightly games of teams trying to make the playoffs is evident. The year concludes with the completion of the NBA Finals. There are times throughout the wagering year that I will take a self induced break when I sense being a bit stale or just feel a sense of fatigue. They are normally short in duration but extremely valuable in stepping away and refreshing myself. Once back, I find myself much clearer and ready to continue with new found vitality. As tonight could possibly conclude the NBA Playoffs, I am very much looking forward to resting but I have begun my study on college football already. Wishing everyone well during the dog days of summer.

Been awhile since we chatted. Doing my best to improve my health and hoping to be better by the fall. Hope you have been well and noticed your contributions to the Offshore Forum on a daily basis. I'll chime in once in awhile when I see a subject of interest that I might be able to provide some contribution.

LMFAO Ted,

As you know this place often seems to 'reward' idiocy & hype whereas many of those with Intelligence & Wisdom are ignored as they do not bring as much flash or Glamour to the table. Good Posters will often get scared away...A recent example of this IMHO is O Frog...Of course we don't see you around the Main Forum anymore either...

As for myself, wether I have 'rose colored lenses' on or not...I try to say things as I see them, with no Bias or alterior motives...this can render one Unpopular in the game of RX Politics...I try to contribute to wagering Issues as much as I can
icon_biggrin.gif
, However, I am of course Guilty of polluting the Forum with Many Off Topic threads & my share of Hype
