NBA needs to go back to the old lottery rules.
If you miss the playoffs you get 1 ball in the hopper.
Every team gets an equal shot at the first pick that misses the playoffs.
This would stop the tanking.
There was actually a vote for massive lottery reform that would make it more even but it got voted down. Still likely they do change the policy in the next few years.
NBA obviously knows teams doing what Philly is doing now is bad for the sport even though they are playing it right.
Yea I agree with philly.
Cant blame them for taking advantage of a broken system.
The system is broken.
They need to just make the odds even for every team that misses the playoffs.
This would solve some of the current problems and create a few new problems.
But the problems that it would solve would be better then the new problems it creates.
I dont think the teams that are 9th in the playoff standings the last week of the season would try to lose on purpose to get in the lottery.
And the teams with the worst records and the end of the season would have no reason to try to lose it would not improver their draft position.
It would completely end tanking almost 100%.
Then do the draw live on ESPN.
The ratings would be huge.
You miss the playoffs you get 1 ball with your name on it.
The first ball that pops out gets the last pick in the lottery.
Keep pulling balls live till you get to the first pick.
At the end you have 2 balls spinning around for the 1st pick of the draft for the rights to draft an Anthony Davis, or Andrew Wiggins type player.
This would be must see tv.
Just playing devils advocate, this could cause some problems
There is a massive difference between an anthony davis type player and say, the 10th pick in draft. HUGE difference. There is also a massive difference between the team that misses the playoffs by one spot and the team that finished last. The current system is meant to address that issue.
With each team that missed the playoffs having an equal chance to get the 1st pick, you are going to end up with perennial bottom dwellers that just keep getting worse and worse and worse. You could possibly see a team that finishes last place in the league 10-15 years in a row.
The tanking and the trading of players for expiring salaries just for the slot are horrible. There was actually a vote for massive lottery reform that would make it more even but it got voted down. Still likely they do change the policy in the next few years.
NBA obviously knows teams doing what Philly is doing now is bad for the sport even though they are playing it right.
How do you sell $100 tickets to see this? There is nothing wrong with what Philly is doing. They took a shot on Andrew Bynum a few urs ago to help put a 6-8th seed team over the top and it failed. So they are starting over. They drafted a bunch of young kids and they are smart enough to not waste their money on shitty overpriced free agents. They are competing, not like they are trying to lose. They just do not have the talent right now. They have a core of MCW, Embiid, Noel, KJ McDaniels, a legit player over in Europe who will be coming over next season and they will have a top 10 pick again. The sixers are trying to build a team to win a title not be a 7 seed every yr and get bounced in rd1.
oh by the way, Tony Wroten can play. he may end up being better than MCW. Wroten can get to the rim on anyone. What a steal he was.
