Go to the local casino or card rooms and just talk to the players/dealers

Well said.

Another great place is around where local bookmakers settle with players. Sometimes sportsbars are a Great place for local connections to ALL types of on shore gambling.

I was at a $320 buy in game last year that was raided by off duty cops here in S. Florida. They took all the cash. They squeezed over 40 grand. My friend was chip leader and I was doing well and in 5th or 6th. Needless to say we were pissed. The owner of the joint basically said we were all SOL and he closed up shop. I heard he reopened a couple months later at a different location. Personally I think he was in on it.

That is wrong. Most of the time the guy bankrolling the game is going to pay out what you lost, only exceptions would be if the guy gives it all up and leaves town. He can't know exact what you had on the table but he should have a good idea where everyone was. I was at a game as a player once and the owner made good on my chips, later running a game I got popped and did the same, not only the players but the dealers and cook got paid as well.

If that guy is open I promise you I would go get my money if I was in your shoes. That's ridiculous he didn't voluntarily pay out in the first place. BTW you are probably right, if they were off duty cops this whole thing was probably a set-up from the word go. They don't send "off duty" cops to these things, they usually send vice and/or FDLE. In my case it looked like they were fighting to save the mainland when they came in to stop this game full of 60 and 70 year old retirees.

The guy that ran the joint probably did not have 40k to his name. They confiscated all the buy in money and chips. There was no way to know who had what. We were only about an hour into the tourney as the rebuy period was close to the end. Most of the players were glad to get out and not be arrested. A few of us were irate and wanted refunds but what could we do? This was a room full of semi-pros and a few fish. All the money was held in a large cash box and that was immediately seized. We were held inside while they recorded everyone's name and address which took about an hour and a half. The owner was put into cuffs as well as a few dealers, but they eventually let them go too. I was not the only one who thought the owner might be in on it, though many certainly knew him much better and vouched for his innocence.

Oh a tourney, then everyone entered should just get their buy in fees back, no way to decide who would have won. Yeah that whole thing certainly sounds bogus to me, the guy probably knew a few cops that wanted to make a few bucks. They just can't confiscate the money and then let everyone go without filing a report, you can't even pull your gun without doing that.

The State Attorney's Office was with the cops when they busted us, LOL. Normally if it's a real bust the players are sometimes let go but usually written a ticket, not much more than a parking ticket so it's not a big deal really. You go pay $50 and it's over. Little more hairy for the owner and the dealers, they usually get operating a gambling house thrown at them, it can get very expensive. If it was a real bust they did not just let the owner go....

I paid lawyer fees, lost everything in the home, paid court costs, fines, probation charges etc..... The worst part though on top of everything I paid another 24K in "investigative costs", included in that was all the money the undercover cop lost in the game as he was trying to gather information on all the local games. I asked them politely to at least send a better playing snitch next time if I got to pay back what he loses, LOL. Anyway no biggie, since it happened to me down there in Florida too I was just curious about it. Thanks.

There are tons of illegal card rooms here in Houston. There is a game every night in any part of town you live in with all limits available. Sammy Farha still plays at a high stakes card room here. Poker is so big here that even a famous Houston Rocket runs a game here(raked illegal game). In areas with no casinos, Houston has the most backdoor cardrooms.

By WCTI Staff
POSTED: 8:05 am EDT August 5, 2011

EDGECOMBE COUNTY -- A raid on an illegal gambling operation led to the arrest of the chairman of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners.
The Rocky Mount Telegram reports Leonard Wiggins and nine other people were arrested during raids at two homes in Raleigh and cabin in Wendell. Wiggins was charged with a misdemeanor violation. In addition to $187,000 in cash, ALE agents seized poker and craps tables, marijuana and drug paraphernalia and an assault rifle, the paper reported.
It is unknown if Wiggins will retain his seat on the board of commissioners.

Just a reminder - when you see the little old white bearded man it means the thread is an old thread bumped up.

At least when this little warning icon is posted you won't find yourself reading something from 2005 and thinking it is current.

There are plenty in my area. I use to play with bookies years ago. There were 2 games I use to attend that had about 10 bookies playing every Wed, Friday & Sunday nights. I stopped playing years ago tho & got into online poker at Party Poker.com & Full Tilt & when Party Poker closed down, I stopped playing poker for good.

I can still find poker games locally but I could care less about poker now a days, doesnt do it for me anymore.

If you play the brick and mortars in your area it should be fairly easy to find the underground circuit. The few that I still play may be more secure than the casinos. The action is far superior.
