ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Retiring Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortizsurpassed Shoeless Joe Jackson for most RBIs in a final season with his 124th on Friday in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Ortiz belted a two-run homer off Rays starter Chris Archer in the first inning.
The blast hit off the D-Ring of the catwalk, padding his home run record and putting him in sole possession of the RBI mark. It was also the 14th ball to hit a catwalk at Tropicana Field this season -- another record.
Jackson drove in 123 runs in 1920 before he was banned from the game.
Ortiz had passed Dave Kingman for most home runs in a final season -- Ortiz has 37 to Kingman's 35 from 1986.
The home run also tied Ortiz with Lou Gehrig for 10th on the all-time list for extra-base hits (1,190) and moved him ahead of Harry Hooper on the overall hit list with 2,464 -- good for 108th in history.
