When I said Sixer fans are unhappy now I was talking about in the moment and down 0-3. Obviously, you have to be happy with the strong finish and future prospects, although coaching may be a question mark still. I think Philly and the C's are shaping up to be playoff rivals for the foreseeable future. Probably a lot of 1 and 2 seeds between them.
As for the C's and star power, I disagree. Irving & Hayward are stars today, while the 21 year old Brown and the 20 years and two months old Tatum (kid can't even drink legally) certainly have all-star potential.
The C's also own the 1st round pick of three other teams over the next 2 or 3 seasons, plus their own. And they have first round picks / projects from recent years still developing (they had a shitload of 1st round picks, took a few projects)
I love where they're at
I would agree about the C’s future looking incredibly bright. Tatum and Brown are young, valuable prospects, coupled with and abundance of options available to the team through the draft and/or trades. Hayward is a nice piece and it’s unfortunate what happened to him this season, but he’s far from a super star. A much needed piece of the puzzle, but not a guy who is going to be a major difference maker when it comes to league dominance. Irving is a super star, lower end IMO, but a star nonetheless. I fear he’s a rapidly depreciating asset and his and Hayward’s timeline just doesn’t appear to align with Tatum/Brown’s.
I’ll be curious to see how the C’s play this out. If they want to win now, they likely will need to move some combination of Tatum/Brown/picks to do so. Or, do they ride it out and attempt to build a dynasty down the line. Tough call, but in today’s NBA it’s super teams that win titles on a consistent basis, not teams led by marginal stars. Do they continue to go the always a bridesmaid route, or a bridesmaids bridesmaid route for the next few years and hope the draft picks come through and some combination of Brown/Tatum and future picks become true super stars down the road or try and cash in now on proven super stars and give up some of that bright, but unknown future. Their track record suggests they’ll likely make the right decisions either way, but I suspect they’ll make moves to try and win now. Far too many unknowns riding it out IMO, picks could falter, Tatum/Brown could never develop into true super stars, other young teams could make major moves to surpass Boston in the short-term, etc.
Should be a fun ride for C’s fan however they move forward. At a minimum they should be floating around the top of the league every year for the foreseeable future and at a maximum could set themselves up to be “the” team for a stretch.
