The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.
“The city’s subpoena of sermons and other pastoral communications is both needless and unprecedented,” Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Christina Holcomb said in a statement. “The city council and its attorneys are engaging in an inquisition designed to stifle any critique of its actions.”
ADF, a nationally-known law firm specializing in religious liberty cases, is representing five Houston pastors. They filed a motion in Harris County court to stop the subpoenas arguing they are “overbroad, unduly burdensome, harassing, and vexatious.”

“Political and social commentary is not a crime,” Holcomb said. “It is protected by the First Amendment.”
The subpoenas are just the latest twist in an ongoing saga over the Houston’s new non-discrimination ordinance. The law, among other things, would allow men to use the ladies room and vice versa. The city council approved the law in June.
The Houston Chronicle reported opponents of the ordinance launched a petition drive that generated more than 50,000 signatures – far more than the 17,269 needed to put a referendum on the ballot.
However, the city threw out the petition in August over alleged irregularities.
After opponents of the bathroom bill filed a lawsuit the city’s attorneys responded by issuing the subpoenas against the pastors.
The pastors were not part of the lawsuit. However, they were part of a coalition of some 400 Houston-area churches that opposed the ordinance. The churches represent a number of faith groups – from Southern Baptist to non-denominational.
“City council members are supposed to be public servants, not ‘Big Brother’ overlords who will tolerate no dissent or challenge,” said ADF attorney Erik Stanley. “This is designed to intimidate pastors.”
Mayor Parker will not explain why she wants to inspect the sermons. I contacted City Hall for a comment and received a terse reply from the mayor’s director of communications.
“We don’t comment on litigation,” said Janice Evans.
However, ADF attorney Stanley suspects the mayor wants to publicly shame the ministers. He said he anticipates they will hold up their sermons for public scrutiny. In other words – the city is rummaging for evidence to “out” the pastors as anti-gay bigots.
Among those slapped with a subpoena is Steve Riggle, the senior pastor of Grace Community Church. He was ordered to produce all speeches and sermons related to Mayor Annise Parker, homosexuality and gender identity.
The mega-church pastor was also ordered to hand over “all communications with members of your congregation” regarding the non-discrimination law.
“This is an attempt to chill pastors from speaking to the cultural issues of the day,” Riggle told me. “The mayor would like to silence our voice. She’s a bully.”
Rev. Dave Welch, executive director of the Texas Pastor Council, also received a subpoena. He said he will not be intimidated by the mayor.
“We’re not afraid of this bully,” he said. “We’re not intimidated at all.”
He accused the city of violating the law with the subpoenas and vowed to stand firm in the faith.
“We are not going to yield our First Amendment rights,” Welch told me. ‘This is absolutely a complete abuse of authority.”
Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, said pastors around the nation should rally around the Houston ministers.
“The state is breaching the wall of separation between church and state,” Perkins told me. ‘Pastors need to step forward and challenge this across the country. I’d like to see literally thousands of pastors after they read this story begin to challenge government authorities – to dare them to come into their churches and demand their sermons.”
Perkins called the actions by Houston’s mayor “obscene” and said they “should not be tolerated.”
“This is a shot across the bow of the church,” he said.
This is the moment I wrote about in my book, “God Less America.” I predicted that the government would one day try to silence American pastors. I warned that under the guise of “tolerance and diversity” elected officials would attempt to deconstruct religious liberty.
Sadly, that day arrived sooner than even I expected.
Tony Perkins is absolutely right. Now is the time for pastors and people of faith to take a stand. We must rise up and reject this despicable strong-arm attack on religious liberty. We cannot allow ministers to be intimidated by government thugs.
The pastors I spoke to tell me they will not comply with the subpoena – putting them at risk for a “fine or confinement, or both.”
Heaven forbid that should happen. But if it does, Christians across America should be willing to descend en masse upon Houston and join these brave men of God behind bars.
Pastor Welch compared the culture war skirmish to the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto, fought in present-day Harris County, Texas. It was a decisive battle of the Texas Revolution.
“This is the San Jacinto moment for traditional family,” Welch told me. “This is the place where we stop the LGBT assault on the freedom to practice our faith.”
We can no longer remain silent. We must stand together - because one day – the government might come for your pastor.

I'm with you Houston churches. Why is it always Democrats who want to stifle freedoms of speech and religion, our two most basic founding principles?

Regulating people's lives is part of the progressive doctrine, so not surprising.

It is outrageous that such an ignorant, hateful person holds elective office.

Notice that the left doesn't care. Since they're on the right side of history and stuff.

of course, the minute it becomes national news the leader of the witch hunt is suddenly blaming lawyers and saying she had nothing to do with it, had no knowledge of it and that she's on "your side". Yeah, right. Tolerance for thee, but not for me.

"Oh but the gays just want to be left alone, and have their equal rights"

Bullshit, their rainbow flag is becoming the new Mark of the Beast.

Bryan Fischer says the gay rainbow is today's mark of the beast. (torbakhopper/Flickr/Creative Commons) "And it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark" (Rev. 13:16-17, ESV).
A baker in Oregon is fined $150,000, told he needs "rehabilitation," and put out of business for declining to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding. A baker in Colorado is fined, ordered to bake a cake in violation of his own conscience, and sent to re-education camp for the same offense. A florist in Washington is pursued by the state attorney general for politely declining to make a floral arrangement for a same-sex wedding. A photographer in New Mexico is fined $6,700 for declining to do a photo shoot for a lesbian wedding.
A T-shirt company is ordered to produce T-shirts to promote a message it finds morally objectionable. Jennifer Keeton and Julea Ward are kicked out of graduate school counseling programs because of their moral objections to homosexual conduct.
Chris Culliver of the 49ers is sent to re-education camp prior to the Super Bowl two years ago for laughing at homosexuality in NFL locker rooms. The special-teams coach of the Minnesota Vikings is suspended and nearly fired for a joke about homosexuality. A safety for the Miami Dolphins is sent to re-education camp for tweeting out his displeasure over Michael Sam's slobbery homosexual kiss on draft day. A Canadian broadcaster is fired for defending man-woman marriage. Craig James is fired by Fox Sports Southwest for defending natural marriage in a senatorial campaign.
What do all these victims share in common? Their ability to engage in commerce was brought to a screeching halt because they would not celebrate, endorse or promote homosexual behavior.
The book of Revelation, in speaking of the end of days, indicates that one of the goals of the anti-Christ in his campaign to establish his own twisted caliphate over the entire world will be to drive Christians out of business altogether.
In John's vision, any Christian who does not willingly accept the mark of the beast will not be allowed to buy or to sell. He'll be fired, or won't be hired, or will be drummed out of business entirely.
So what is this mark of the beast today? That's easy. It's the gay rainbow.
This is the rainbow Big Gay has stolen from the Bible and from the church and turned into its own twisted symbol of perversion.
Anyone who does not plaster homosexual rainbow stickers all over himself, his resume and the windows of his business will have his or her commercial interests terminated with extreme prejudice.
The mark is on the "hand," referring to what a man does, and it is on the "forehead," referring to the way he thinks. It will not be enough simply to do what the Gay Gestapo demands; men will be forced to think politically correct thoughts about sodomy or face termination.
Legislation is even now under consideration—the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)—which will codify the mark of the beast and use the power of the federal leviathan to impose it tyrannically on the populace.
The great need of the hour is for prophetic voices to thunder against this demonic oppression from the pulpit and for statesmen to thunder against this beast in the halls of Congress. "We the people" must insist on this. If the voices of truth are not soon raised against this abomination, we may find out it's a lot later than we think.

But it is nice to see the 'well-considered' comparisons to this affront and Nazi Germany.

The only difference is there were no churches in Nazi Germany.

Other than that, I see zero difference between the behavior of the leaders. Nazi and Communist governments would regularly encourage, if not demand, citizens to spy on each other. Some people even had quotas for how many "traitors" they'd need to out every week, month, etc. It was your duty to report any dissent against the state...and if they even suspected you of not fulfilling that obligation, you would find yourself either in jail or at some labor camp shortly after.

Same exact thought process here. If you don't tell us everything we demand, we'll hold you in contempt of court...which is the first step of an attempt to shut you down.

Boy, sounds an awful lot like a civil liberties issue. I wonder where the ACLU is on this one?

Dimocraps are cut from the same cloth as some of history's most oppressive and brutal dictators. The topic of a pastor's weekly sermon is none of this ugly dyke hag's business.

You're going to argue that a mayor telling Pastors they must hand in their sermons for review isn't Nazi-esque?

100 PERCENT!

Did my ancestors get to file a motion in court to stop the Nazis?

Your comparison to Nazi Germany is not only ludicrous, it's an insult to everyone who suffered and was gassed and starved to death by the Nazi regime.

You get to fight back, we didn't. Get back to me when the pastors are in Dachau.

VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican is watering down a ground-breaking overture to gays - but only if they speak English.
After a draft report by bishops debating family issues came under criticism from many conservative English-speaking bishops, the Vatican released a new English translation on Thursday.
A section initially entitled "Welcoming homosexuals" is now "Providing for homosexual persons," and the tone of the text is significantly colder.
The initial English version - released Monday along with the original - accurately reflected the Italian version in both letter and spirit, and contained a remarkable tone of acceptance to gays. The other translations were similarly faithful to the Italian and didn't deviate in tone.
Conservatives were outraged, and the English was changed.
The first English version asked if the church was capable of "welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a fraternal space in our communities." The new version asks if the church is "capable of providing for these people, guaranteeing ... them ... a place of fellowship in our communities."
The first version said homosexual unions can often constitute a "precious support in the life of the partners." The new one says gay unions often constitute "valuable support in the life of these persons."
Other changes were made in other sections of the text, but without significantly altering the meaning or tone.
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said English-speaking bishops had requested the changes on the grounds that the first translation was hasty and error-ridden.
When Lombardi was shown how significantly the meaning had changed, he pledged to investigate and didn't rule out a third version.
Lombardi stressed that the original Italian remains the official text, and noted that the draft is being revised top-to-bottom for a final report which will go to a vote among bishops on Saturday.
If two-thirds approve it, the report will form the basis of discussions in dioceses around the world before another meeting of bishops next year, and ultimately a teaching document by Pope Francis.
Based on the complaints to the original text and the number of amendments proposed Thursday, the drafting committee appointed by the pope has its work cut out for it if it wants to get a two-thirds majority.
The Vatican released summaries of the amendments from the 10 working groups that have been negotiating all week. They are near-unanimous in insisting that church doctrine on family life be more fully asserted and explained - that marriage is between a man and woman, open to children - and that faithful Catholic families should be held up as models and encouraged rather than focus on family problems and "irregular" unions.
The English-speaking working groups were among the most critical. The one headed by Cardinal Wilfred Fox Napier of South Africa complained about the translation of the draft report and used the new "providing for" homosexuals language of the revised English translation, suggesting that he or someone in his group might have requested the change.
On Thursday, Francis added Napier, as well as an Australian bishop, to the drafting committee that will compose the final document. It was widely noticed that Francis' initial appointees were largely progressives whom he named after conservatives were elected to head the working groups proposing the amendments.
African bishops, who are among the most conservative on family issues, were not included in his initial picks.

[h=1]Texas Attorney General tells Houston city hall: Stop bullying Christians[/h]

NOW PLAYINGExclusive: Houston subpoenas pastors to turn over sermons

Never autoplay videos

Stop bullying people of faith.
That’s the bottom line of a harshly-worded letter written by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to Houston City Attorney David Feldman.
Feldman’s office sent subpoenas to five Houston pastors last month demanding that they turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality and gender identity issues. They also wanted sermons or correspondence that referenced Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor.
I’m not buying the mayor’s so-called change of heart – not one bit.
The subpoenas were issued in a response to a lawsuit related to Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), also known as the “Bathroom Bill.”
Abbott called the subpoenas “aggressive and invasive” and said they show “no regard for the very serious First Amendment considerations at stake.”
“Whether you intend it to be so or not, your action is a direct assault on the religious liberty guaranteed by the First Amendment,” Abbott wrote, demanding that the subpoenas be rescinded.
“You should immediately instruct your lawyers to withdraw the city’s subpoenas,” he added.
Late Wednesday, the city issued a statement to the Wall Street Journal:
“Mayor Parker agrees with those who are concerned about the city legal department’s subpoenas for pastor’s sermons. The subpoenas were issued by pro bono attorneys helping the city prepare for the trial regarding the petition to repeal the new Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) in January.
Neither the mayor nor City Attorney David Feldman were aware the subpoenas had been issued until yesterday. Both agree the original documents were overly broad. The city will move to narrow the scope during an upcoming court hearing. Feldman says the focus should be only on communications related to the HERO petition process.”

However, as of the writing of this column, the subpoenas have not been rescinded.
Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Christina Holcomb said there is no evidence to suggest the city is “backing off” or “narrowing” its subpoena request.
“The shame that the city of Houston has brought upon itself is real, but the claim that it has changed course is not,” she said. “The city has so far taken no concrete action to withdraw the subpoenas.
Furthermore, the subpoenas themselves are the problem – not just their request for pastors’ sermons. The city is not off the hook from its illegitimate request for e-mails, text messages, and other communications in which these pastors, who are not even party to this lawsuit, may have disagreed with the mayor. The way to fix this is to withdraw the subpoenas entirely. Otherwise, the city’s and the mayor’s overtures are simply more window-dressing intended to shield them from public scrutiny.”
Abbott accused lawyers representing the city of being “inappropriately aggressive.”
“In good faith, I hope you merely failed to anticipate how inappropriately aggressive your lawyers would be,” he said. “Many, however, believe your actions reflect the city government’s hostility to religious beliefs that do not align with city policies.”
To call Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance “controversial” is an understatement. The ordinance was approved by the City Council but never submitted to voters for approval.
The sticking point for many churches was a provision in the ordinance that would (among other things) allow men who identify as women to use the restrooms of their choice – and vice versa.
Dave Welch, the executive director of the Texas Pastor Council, is one of the five ministers who received a subpoena. He said he will not be intimidated by the mayor.
“My answer to that is – bring it on,” he told me on Tuesday. “We are dealing with bullies used to getting away with abuse of power.”
Rev. Welch and Attorney General Abbott support something I explore in my new book, “God Less America.” This is a situation where those who preach tolerance and diversity are the least tolerant and diverse of all.
Abbott called on City Hall to act immediately to “reassure the people of Houston that their government respects their freedom of religion and does not punish those who oppose city policies on religious grounds.”
I’m not buying the mayor’s so-called change of heart – not one bit.
On Wednesday, she took to Twitter to express what I believe are her true feelings.
“If the 5 pastors used pulpits for politics, their sermons are fair game,” Parker tweeted.
And during a Wednesday afternoon press conference she was less than contrite when a reporter asked why it was necessary to subpoena sermons.
“One word in a very long legal document which I knew nothing about and would never have read – and I’m vilified coast to coast, it’s a normal day at the office for me,” she said with a chuckle.
Mayor Parker got her hand caught in the religious liberty cookie jar.
“The people of Houston and their religious leaders must be absolutely secure in the knowledge that their religious affairs are beyond the reach of the government,” Abbott wrote. ‘Nothing short of an immediate reversal by your office will provide that security.”
If nothing else, this shameful episode has exposed the fact that Houston City Hall is infested with anti-Christian bigots who bully preachers in the name of equality

Two things:

1. My ancestors had just as much taken from them by Communists. Maybe more. Several owned businesses and homes which were confiscated and a few were even executed for crimes against the state that never really happened. Your ancestors don't have a monopoly on brutal oppression.

2. No one is saying Church pastors are going to be sent to Auschwitz. What they are arguing is if this disgusting dyke had her way, that's exactly what would happen. Her mindset is not all that different than that of the Nazi or Communist leadership...silence and stomp out any opposition, no matter the cost. The only difference is she can't haul any anti-homo pastors off to jail...and hopefully never will have that authority.
