I haven't seen the rankings, but they have to have one of the easiest schedules in the league this year. I think they might win 9 games, but it's not a bet I would make.

In 2008: Fourth in offensive efficency, but 26th in redzone efficency. Turn over margin was -10; even fumble recoveries was only +2 although +9 in forced fumbles

Those stats made a big difference last year, but tend to balance out from year to year. With an easy schedule I'll take the over

Robinson rejoins Texans, begins preparations for opener

Big support group

Finally back in the fold, Dunta Robinson has the backing of his teammates and coaches as he readies for the season

Cornerback Dunta Robinson rejoined the Texans on Sunday after missing training camp in a contract holdout.

Dunta Robinson’s teammates did not roll out a red carpet Sunday when he returned to the Texans, but they welcomed him back with respect and affection.
“Mostly hugs, high-fives and a lot of ‘Glad you’re back, man,’ ” Robinson said after working out at Methodist Training Center for the first time since last season. “My relationship with my teammates has always been great. I missed these guys, and they’ve missed me.”
Robinson (5-10, 184 pounds) passed his physical, signed his one-year tender as the franchise player for $9.957 million and started working out with strength coach Ray Wright about halfway through Sunday’s practice on an adjacent field.
“Everybody’s excited to have him back,” middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans said. “He’s a playmaker. It’ll be great to have him back on the field.”
Even the offensive players were pumped up about Robinson’s return.
“Having a premier guy like Dunta back is invaluable,” offensive tackle Eric Winston said. “He’s a good guy, a hard worker and a leader.
“It’s fun having him around. He brings a certain energy to our team. It gives everyone peace of mind just knowing he’s over there.”
The Texans are off today. When they return, Robinson will have four practices to convince coach Gary Kubiak, defensive coordinator Frank Bush and secondary coach David Gibbs that he’ll be ready to start at cornerback opposite Fred Bennett on Sunday when the Texans begin the regular season against the New York Jets at Reliant Stadium.
“It’s up to him to show us how he is physically and how far he can come this week,” Kubiak said. “I don’t think you’re looking at a player that’s going to play 60 to 70 snaps. He’ll let us know by how he practices. We’ll see how much he can handle as we go.
“He’s one of the cornerstones we’ve built the team around. I know they’re (teammates) counting on him. He’s very upbeat and ready to go.”
When he failed to reach an agreement on a long-term contract and was designated as the franchise player, Robinson, 27, didn’t participate in the offseason program, training camp or preseason.

Time to play

“I understand what he went through, and I understand the franchise, and all that’s over,” Kubiak said. “It’s time to play. His teammates know what he can do for them. They’re ready for him to do his part.
“It’s good to have him back. He’s a great player, and he’s going to make us better.”
Brice McCain, the sixth-round pick who did so well in preseason, would have started against the Jets had Robinson not reported.
“It means a lot to have him back,” McCain said. “Everybody’s excited. He’s a great player that’ll help our team. And I can learn from him. I can’t wait to see him on the field.”
Even though he won’t be in top condition because of the layoff, Robinson should be able to help the run defense. He excels against the run, and the Jets figure to run as much as possible to protect rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Singled out

“We all know what D-Rob does when he’s out there — he brings an added element to our defense,” outside linebacker Zac Diles said. “With him back, there’s a different aura around here.”
Last year, Robinson missed the first five games while recovering from surgery to repair knee and hamstring injuries.
“Last year, I came off PUP (physically unable to perform list), practiced for three days and was playing on Sunday, so it’s a situation I’m familiar with,” Robinson said. “If I can feel a little better every day, I’ll be ready to go Sunday.”
Robinson turned down a multiyear contract that included $23 million in guaranteed money. He can be franchised again next year.

3-3

the QB play was impressive today..

CINCINNATI -- With four touchdown passes, Matt Schaub deprived the Bengals of another day for drama.
Schaub tied his career high with his four scoring throws -- two of them to tight end Owen Daniels -- as the Houston Texans had their way all day, pulling away to a 28-17 victory over a Cincinnati team that couldn't stay close enough to give itself a chance at the end.
The Bengals (4-2) had won three consecutive games in the last 22 seconds, pulling off one improbable drive after another because an opponent failed to finish them off. They had one more escape on Sunday -- Steve Slaton fumbled with the Texans (3-3) in field-goal range with 6:12 left.

Is Matt Schaub A Top Ten QB?

Matt Schaub has had a great season so far for the Houston Texans. Schaub in my opinion is looking like he is becoming a dominant QB force in the NFL.
Today against the 4-1 Cincinnati Bengals, Schaub went 28-for-40 with 392 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. It's no surprise Schaub is having such a good season; he is throwing to one of the best WRs in the league.
Schaub has thrown for a total of 14 TD passes this year with over 1,800 passing yards. Schaub is only one touchdown away from tying his career high from last year.
Schaub played college football at Virginia and was chosen with the 90th pick in the 2004 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
He started in one game his rookie year and one in his second year for Atlanta. Schaub did not start any games in his third year with the Falcons. Schaub's career stats as a Falcon included six touchdowns, six interceptions and 1,033 passing yards.
In 2007, Schaub was traded to the Texans for a pair of second round picks, in 2007 and 2008. The day after Schaub was acquired, former starting QB David Carr was released.
Schaub started 11 games in each of the past two seasons. In 2007, Schaub threw nine touchdowns and nine interceptions with 2,241 passing yards. In 2008, Schaub threw 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with 3,043 passing yards.
Then we get to this year, which looks like the year that Schaub is going to finally be recognized as a top 10 quarterback. Schaub has only thrown five interceptions thus far and has 14 touchdowns.
Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson and Schaub are clearly the future of the Texans. In the next couple of years, don't be surprised if Schaub is compared to guys like Brady, the Mannings, and Brees; or if he helps bring the Texans to the playoffs.
I believe after this season people will consider Matt Schaub a top 10 quarterback.

11-01-09:

Thanks to Moats, a six-year career backup, the Texans (5-3) won their third straight, second in a row on the road, and are off to the best start in team history.
Moats finished with 126 yards rushing and another 25 yards receiving, and more important, went without a turnover in scoring touchdowns on three straight fourth-quarter possessions.

1. Foaming at the mouth

Don't look now, but the Houston Texans are for real. Seriously.
Houston (5-3) had a big statement win in Buffalo. Yeah, that's right. It's a victory against a team that had won two straight, in a difficult place to play. And let's be honest: These aren't your nephew's Texans (it would be tough to call them your father's Texans or even your sister's Texans because they have only been around this decade). In the past, if you have bothered to follow the mediocre history of this club, Houston loses these games. They tease you and slip back to .500. Don't look now, but the Texans have strung together three straight strong games, in Cincy, at home against the Niners and this past weekend against the Bills.
It sets up a golden opportunity to make a gigantic statement in Indy against the undefeated Colts. And I think they have a very realistic chance to win the game. Again, seriously.
The Buffalo game was one where Houston had to deal with adversity. Matt Schaub, who has had a spectacular season, threw a pair of picks. Steve Slaton was fumbling the ball and rightly was glued to the bench. Stud tight end Owen Daniels left the game with a season-ending injury. The Texans, in prior years, would've lost and limped home at 4-4, and the fans, if they channeled their inner New York attitude, would be saying, relatively speaking, "Same, old Texans."
But this year, it's about efficiency and resilience. Star linebacker DeMeco Ryans told us on Monday that the Texans are playing with a lot of moxie. Ryans said: "We are finishing games. We are confident. We don't let things affect us like we did in the past. If we turn the ball over or give up big plays, we regroup. That's the big difference." And that's not player speak. That's a fact, compared with previous Texans teams. Houston now takes the field expecting to win, in a year when the owner predicted the playoffs.
During a wide-ranging interview on Sirius NFL Radio, Ryans also praised Gary Kubiak for his approach and new defensive coordinator Frank Bush for his aggressive style. And Ryans is truly appreciative of the effort of new linebacker Brian Cushing, who has been a tackling machine en route to being the early favorite (sorry, Jairus Byrd) for the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Finally, Houston has a legit defense!
And with Slaton on the pine, it gave Ryan Moats the opportunity to dazzle. The former Eagles draft pick has always had the talent, but injuries held him back. Moats gashed the Bills for three touchdowns and a stunning 126 yards. While we were all surprised, Ryans says the Texans see this talent on display in practice daily. Ryans anticipates that while Slaton will be given another opportunity (and he should be, with his talent), Moats will still get a lot of action in the game against Indy.
Ah yes, Indy.
You mean the team that owns a 13-1 record against the Texans, who treats them like the freshman squad? Yes, those Colts.
But for the first time in franchise history, there is a swagger to the Texans. Schaub, though at a disadvantage sans Owen Daniels on Sunday, can officially go point for point with Peyton Manning. Andre Johnson is Reggie Wayne. The Texans offensive line has played surprisingly well. Mario Williams is the answer to Dwight Freeney. And Houston did a great job against the Bengals' high-powered attack earlier in the year.
Now, the Colts are the Colts. Jim Caldwell told us on Sirius NFL Radio on Monday that he doesn't worry about his team ever getting ahead of itself because it has had the gaudy record before and the leadership on the team is too strong.
But Houston, no longer the red-headed stepchild of the AFC South, is primed to win 10 games this season no matter what happens in Indy.
Seriously.
It might be worth your time to pay attention.

The Texans didn’t play this past weekend so I decided to take a bye week as well.
The wife and I flew up to New York to visit some friends, do some touristy stuff, and eat and drink to dangerous levels.
I pretty much ignored football for the weekend and when I got back on Sunday and checked out what was going on, I realized that it only took a few days for my playoff scenarios from the previous week to change significantly.
Awesome.
Really, though, the majority of the logic still holds.
I said before that one of the Wild Card teams is almost certainly going to come from the AFC North, and that hasn’t changed. I just got the wrong one. Maybe.
Cincinnati’s victory over Pittsburgh puts them in the driver’s seat to win the AFC North and their upcoming games are @ Oakland, vs Cleveland, and vs Detroit.
Then they have two tough ones @ Minnesota and @ San Diego before another cakewalk at home against KC. That puts them at worst at 11-4 going into their last game against the Jets.
Pittsburgh has only a slightly tougher road with two games against Baltimore, one vs Green Bay and one at Miami. The other games are @ KC, vs Oakland, and @ Cleveland.
Currently sitting at 6-3, I can’t see them going any worse than 11-5 and more likely than not, they’ll be better than that.
None of that matters though because one of them will win the division and one will get the Wild Card. The Texans would prefer to be competing with the Bengals for the wild card because they hold the tie breaker, but that won’t matter if Cincinnati has a better record.
With respect to Baltimore, although it wasn't pretty on Monday, the Ravens did win.
It’s easy to look at their recent performance and say that they’re spiraling in the wrong direction—I mean before last night’s ugly win against a pathetic Cleveland squad, they had lost four of five—but that might be a mistake as they’ve had a complete bitch of a schedule so far. Their only losses have been @ NE, two against Cincinnati, and @ Minnesota, so they may actually be better than their record shows.
Still, they have some tough games on the schedule including Indy at home, two against Pittsburgh, and a December trip to Lambeau. While their schedule may work in our favor, we cannot write them off just yet.
Add all that up, and the AFC North is pretty much a lock for one of the Wild Card spots and a definite threat to steal both.
Shifting gears, it looks more and more like there’s only going to be one postseason representative from the East. The Jets and Dolphins are both 4-5 and playing less than inspired ball right now.
The Jets have lost five of six, with their only win coming at Oakland, and they don’t get the benefit of the schedule doubt like Baltimore does.
Miami, on the other hand, barely squeaked one out at home against a potentially-improving-but-still-bad Tampa Bay team. In fact, Miami’s only wins on the season are two against the aforementioned Jets, the TB game last week, and a drubbing at home against Buffalo. Add in the fact that they may have lost Ronnie Brown for a while—probably their most important offensive player—and I’m just going to wrap up my AFC East discussion right here.
The AFC West only has two teams worth talking about, and they seem to be going in opposite directions. Last week, I gave the division title to Denver while suggesting that San Diego might be our biggest competition for the Wild Card.
Um… let’s go ahead and swap that.
Denver lost Kyle Orton last week to an ankle injury and it’s unclear when he might be able to come back. That puts a major strain on their playoff chances.
Quick aside: One year ago today, the Broncos were 6-4 and leading the division by two over a Chargers team that had just lost four of six and would lose their next two. Jay Cutler was playing great and they were essentially a lock for the playoffs. What if I told you then that they would miss the playoffs, trade Culter, and their 2009 playoff hopes would rest on the health of Kyle Orton’s ankle? Would you try to scam money off of me or just call for an intervention?
Anyway, Denver’s struggling recently and just lost to the Redskins and now sit at 6-3. They’ve got some tough games coming up against the Chargers, Giants, Colts, and Eagles, so the question may not be if they can finish strong and make the playoffs, but rather if their strong start is enough to hold on the a Wild Card spot?
Still, with two against KC and one against the Raiders, a 10-6 finish is still high in the realm of possibilities. Then again, they did just lose to the Redskins.
