Pulling Dayan Viciedo for defensive purposes has become an exception rather than a rule for White Sox manager Robin Ventura because of Viciedo's improvement in left field since learning the position in the spring.
During the Sox's recently concluded six-game trip, Viciedo showed his improvement as a fielder by making a diving catch to rob the Rangers' Ian Kinsler of a hit to kill a seventh-inning rally Sunday, and Viciedo made an over-the-shoulder catch to deny the Twins' Joe Mauer an extra base hit that would have given Minnesota the lead in the seventh on Tuesday.
"It's a great feeling because of the hard work I put in spring training, and it's helped me get to the point I'm at now," Viciedo said.
Viciedo, who has played third base, first base and right field in his three previous seasons, contends that balls hit over his head have been the most difficult plays to read.
When Jordan Danks replaced Viciedo in the ninth inning of Wednesday's victory at Minnesota, it marked one of the few times recently that Viciedo has been lifted with the Sox in the field.
"It feels great because that means the coaching staff has confidence in my abilities," Viciedo said.
Viciedo has been charged with only one error this season.
