The race for New York-bred sprinters, inaugurated in 2004, recognizes John Morrissey, the former champion bare-knuckle boxer and gambler from Troy, N.Y., who created Saratoga Race Course in 1863 with the help of William Travers, John Hunter, and Leonard Jerome. Although not an official member of the Saratoga Association, Morrissey ran the meet when it moved across Union Avenue to its current location. Brought to the United States from Ireland by his parents as a toddler, Morrissey died in 1878 in a room at the Adelphi Hotel in downtown Saratoga Springs at the age of 47. Here in the 14th running of this stakes test, #1 WEEKEND HIDEAWAY qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," takes a class drop (-5), is the overall speed leader, and has produced a quartet of "POWER RUNS" in his last five starts, hitting the board in three of those races, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his last start. Jockey Luis Saez has been in his irons on 14 previous occasions, hitting the board in 8 of those rides, and is back this afternoon here at "The Spa" for his 15th ride.
