At the Gate - Sunday
By Mike Dempsey

California Chrome disposed of his nine overmatched foes with ease on Saturday in the $180,000 Winter Challenge at Los Alamitos, his next to last race of his career, returning $2.10.

The Art Sherman trainee used the race as a prep for his final career start which will come on Jan. 28 in the inaugural running of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park.

Jockey Victor Espinosa took the long way around the Los Al oval, keeping California Chrome wide much of the trip and he accelerated in the stretch to draw off to win by a dozen lengths with ease.

He stopped the timer in the 1 1/16 mile test in a track record setting 1:40.02, shattering the previous mark of 1:40.82 which was set by Uncle Lino on April 30 when he won the California Chrome Stakes.

We had another good day at Gulfstream Park on Saturday with four winners on top. Among the winners was the Todd Pletcher trained Faja, who drifted up from a 3-1 morning line to pay $15.80 with longshot Truly a Moon Shot completing a recommended exacta that paid $323.20, and we hit the trifecta for a $1 that paid $1,474.20.

We had six winners on top on Thursday followed by four more top winners on Friday. Hopefully we can keep it going today as I still have a little Christmas shopping to do.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Clm $16,000 (12:35 ET)
#1 Crazy Bull 6-1
#3 Geffenstein 9-2
#4 Hidden Vow 2-1
#10 Very Very Stella 6-1

Analysis: Crazy Bull was off a beat slow and made up some ground late to rally for fourth last out in the slop going seven furlongs in a race taken off the turf. The gelding beat $16,0000 non-winners of three in his last outing on turf off a 3 1/2 month break. The runner up in that race was Dynamic Decision, who came back to beat $16,000 non-winners of three in his next outing. Third off the bench here and back on his favorite surface.

Geffenstein set the early fractions and weakened to finish fourth last out against $8,000 foes as the beaten favorite. He won for that tag two back and has won 4 of his 13 trips over the turf here. He can handle the step up to $16,000 as these are not much tougher than he has been facing in his recent starts.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 4-1 or better.
EX: 1,3 / 1,3,4,10
TRI: 1,3 / 1,3,4,10 / 1,3,4,8,10

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 9 Alw $43,000N1X (4:32 ET)
#9 Starship Thor 9-2
#6 Little Baker 4-1
#3 Banzai Charge 6-1
#8 More Mia 7-2

Analysis: Starship Thor prompted the early pace and could not match strides late with the winner in a runner up fish last out against Alw-1 optional claimers in his first go off a two month break. He beat $16,000 non-winners of three at Monmouth Park three back and was beaten just a neck two back against Alw-1 optional claimers. He looks well spotted here dropping in for a $16,000 tag for the Cibelli barn that is off to a good start at the meeting, winning with 4 of her first 11 starters.

Little Baker makes his first start since June where he beat Alw-1 optional claimers here at this distance. he beat $10,000 claimers tow back here and has won 4 of 11 overall on the turf here. Decent looking works on the morning tab fort the Ziadie barn.

Wagering
WIN: #9 to win at 7-2 or better.
EX: 6,9 / 3,6,8,9
TRI: 6,9 / 3,6,8,9 / 3,5,6,8,9

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 8 The Gravesand (2:45 ET)
#2 Stallwalkin' Dude 9-5
#1 Summer Revolution 5-2
#8 Life in Shambles 4-1
#3 Drama King 15-1

Analysis: Stallwalkin' Dude tracked the early pace and finished gamely in a tough neck loss at 4-5 last out in the Fall Highweight 'Cap (G3). He won the Bold Ruler 'Cap (G3) two back at Belmont Park going seven furlongs. He has earned triple digit Beyers in four of his last five starts and likes a wet track, having won 5 of 11 on off going. He has not been quite a s good on the inner track but should be able to handle this group.

Summer Revolution prompted the early pace and could not go with the winner late in a runner up finish against Alw-2 optional claimers. He cuts back to six furlongs here and this guy earned slid numbers at seven furlongs, beating Alw-1 foes and running fourth in the King's Bishop (G1). The RRod barn has been on a roll and this guy posted a couple of bullet works since his last outing.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 1,2 / 1,2,3,8
TRI: 1,2 / 1,2,3,8 / 1,2,3,5,8

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Gulfstream Park
R5: #1 Bracken Belle 10-1
R6: #4 Adversary 15-1
R7: #8 Hy Quality Prince 8-1
R10: #1 Siccar 10-1

Good luck today!

CONSORTIUM*CHOICES

# 2 HERCU LINDY 5/2
# 3 FAST N' LOUD 3/1
# 8 GRAND VISION 8/1

Feel pretty confident putting mucho dinero down on HERCU LINDY. This gelding getting the win wouldn't be impossible, a chance. This harness racer looks tough. Look at the 75 average TrackMaster speed fig. Good for a win wager just off the amazing prior class numbers. Have to like this horse. FAST N' LOUD - He has been performing soundly and the speed ratings are among the most favorable in the field. Seems to have a really good class edge based on the participants he has raced against. GRAND VISION - This fine animal has been making trips to the winner's circle on a regular basis, look for him to make another showing soon. Going to post competently, recorded a very compelling TrackMaster Speed Rating in his last outing (70).

CONSORTIUM*CHOICES

# 1 SIM BROWN 8/5
# 2 EXPLOSIVEDAY 9/2
# 10 SPLITSVILLE 15/1

SIM BROWN sure does look ready to score. Really liked this gelding's last race. Ran a big 87 TrackMaster speed fig. Major player. Many selectors think about this gelding on the driver/trainer numbers alone. Recent ratings for the driver - 28 percent win - make this gelding a clear choice in the group of animals. EXPLOSIVEDAY - Achieved a 89 speed fig last out. A duplicate outing here should get the trip to the winner's circle here. Hegdal has the special way for getting horses in the right place to win. Especially knows how to win moving down in class. SPLITSVILLE - Gelding has one of the most solid win stats in the grouping and that could be the deciding factor when they hit the wire.

# 5 STATELY COMMAND 8/5

# 2 LADY BERLIN 3/1

# 1 SKYE NOVA 7/2

STATELY COMMAND looks strong to best this field. Shows evidence of the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 65 speed figure which is one of the strongest in this group of animals. Handler has strong win rate (25 percent) at this distance and surface. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this field in her last competition. LADY BERLIN - Has solid Equibase Speed Figs and has to be considered for a bet in here. Well above average win clip at this distance/surface. SKYE NOVA - Has been running solidly lately and should be on the lead early on. I expect a very good performance from this animal whose conditioner has one of the best return on investment percentages with horses running at this distance and surface.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 5 NAVAJO KITTEN 10/1

# 2 SYDNEY TIME 8/1

# 3 MY MUSIC 10/1

NAVAJO KITTEN looks quite good to best this group of horses in this race especially at such a decent 10/1. Could best this group here, showing strong numbers of late. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group of animals in her last outing. She has formidable class ratings, averaging 88, and has to be given a shot for this event. SYDNEY TIME - I like the rider on this filly - very good chance to win the race. Has performed admirably recently in route races, posting a nifty 75 avg speed rating. MY MUSIC - Recorded a solid speed figure in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest.

Turf Paradise - Race #5 - Post: 2:46pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,000 Class Rating: 78

Rating:

#3 SMOOTH TALKER (ML=6/1)
#4 LONELY LOVER (ML=5/2)
#8 TOM KHA (ML=10/1)
#6 TWILIGHTINPRIDDIS (ML=9/2)

SMOOTH TALKER - Have to make this mare a strong challenger; she comes off a sharp race on December 4th. I think this mare is ready to run a good one. She's had enough outings since the layoff and should be fit. LONELY LOVER - This thoroughbred coming off a solid effort in the last thirty days is a contender in my humble opinion. I think this mare is ready to run a good one. She's had enough efforts since the layoff and should be fit. Took a drop in class last race out, and keeps in that lower class level in this event. A good sign this horse is comfortable and ready to go. Recent speed figures show solid pattern of improvement. TOM KHA - Mare is a few starts into a comeback here. Should give a big race today. This mare was sharp enough to post a 'top two' workout recently. I think she's ready for today's event. Last time out, finished sixth on a track listed as good at Turf Paradise. Will most certainly do better in this event. TWILIGHTINPRIDDIS - This mare is in excellent condition right now. Ended up first in the last race and comes back soon. This mare should be at the fitness peak, this far into her form cycle.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 WONDER ABOUT LOLA (ML=3/1), #1 VELVET HEELS (ML=5/1), #7 TRULY UNUSUAL (ML=6/1),

WONDER ABOUT LOLA - Most unsatisfactory speed fig last time around the track at Turf Paradise at 5 furlongs. Don't feel this pony will improve too much in today's event. VELVET HEELS - Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any kind of closing ability on December 3rd. TRULY UNUSUAL - A pattern of declining speed figures 80/75/67 for this less than sharp equine. Not likely that this animal will finish better than she did last time out when ending up fourth. Should be difficult for this animal to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put her on the likely underlays list.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

#3 SMOOTH TALKER is the play if we get odds of 6/1 or better

Fair Grounds - Race #1 - Post: 1:25pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $16,000 Class Rating: 77

Rating:

#6 ARTIST CRY (ML=4/1)
#2 JEWEL HOUSE (ML=6/1)
#1 GRANDE CHICA (ML=5/1)

ARTIST CRY - This mare is in fine physical condition. Ended up third on Dec 1st. This thoroughbred absolutely loves this track. All her trips to the winner's circle have been here at Fair Grounds. Ranks uppermost in EPS (earnings per start). A dominant effort right here can augment the lifetime earnings. JEWEL HOUSE - It looks like Pedroza had to 'know' this mare on Nov 25th when riding her for the initial time. Back on again today. GRANDE CHICA - Eramia and Sider perform well when they combine forces. It's hard to beat a +90 return on investment for a rider and trainer. I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This mare fits the bill.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 LAVEN'S LIL DAHL (ML=5/2), #4 SWEET ZABYEW (ML=6/1), #5 FIRE ARMS (ML=8/1),

LAVEN'S LIL DAHL - Don't believe this less than sharp equine has what it takes to win this time out. SWEET ZABYEW - This filly didn't do much for me last time. FIRE ARMS - More than enough races at Fair Grounds with no sojourns to the victory stand.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Have to go with #6 ARTIST CRY on the win end if we get at least 9/2 odds

Yonkers: Sunday 12/18 Analysis
By Matt Rose

DRF

MEET STATS: 452 - 1287 / $2,483.10

BEST BETS: 58 - 105 / $196.30

Best Bet: FREEZE OUT (8th)

Spot Play: CHIPPS LAKE (6th)

Race 1

(8) HEMI SEELSTER didn't look all that great leaving the gate last out and ultimately broke; clearly he's capable of rebounding and I wouldn't give up on him yet. (5) SPRINGBANK SAM N rode a perfect trip to victory last out and this recent import looks fast enough to compete here. (7) NOT AFRAID was very game in defeat last out after a busy effort.

Race 2

(2) KEYSTONE ACE shipped from Plainridge to The Meadowlands and trotted evenly in a fast race with some classy rivals; he picks up Bartlett upon arrival, lands a good post and faces no standouts. (10) SUMMERS WINDSONG has really picked up her game in recent starts; contender. (1) WATKINS has the class to go with these.

Race 3

(10) MILITARY BLUE came up a bit short in his debut for new connections but Bartlett sticks with him and he deserves another chance. (2) ZORGWIJK NOVA draws much better after a no-chance effort and he gets a driver upgrade to Scott Zeron. (1) LAUDERDALE looks to be primed for a ground-saving trip from this spot; use in gimmicks.

Race 4

(3) MYSTIC FLOWER debuts for new connections and qualified effectively now on Lasix; Team Bongiorno trotter could be ready right off the bat. (1) SIM BROWN has been solid in his last few and looms the one to beat from sharp connections. (6) NEVER EVER CLEVER was buried in with some decent stock at The Big M; consider if the price is right.

Race 5

(8) LO RAIL CROSSING is a perfect 3 for 3 off the Banca claim and I don't suspect the outside post will present a major problem. (9) MOVEMENT has also been razor-sharp and I can't fault anyone for looking in her direction. (10) ROCKET MASTER has been a bit erratic but does have talent; I suspect he'll take some action despite his lofty morning line.

Race 6

(3) CHIPPS LAKE won easily upon moving to the Richard Johnson barn for Bongiorno and they can easily double up in this weak field. (5) STARSABOVEALLERAGE gets a nice driver upgrade to Holland. (8) WHATNBLAZES hasn't won in two years but the veteran does fit with this type.

Race 7

(6) DREAMSTEELER has been rock-solid in her last four, all at this added distance; takes another. (8) SHOWMEYOURGUNS caved in late after cutting the pace last out; he drops a notch in price and has the speed to overcome the poor post. (2) AFFECTIVE ACTION ships from Saratoga off a win and goes for new connections; consider for a share at a price.

Race 8

(6) FREEZE OUT has finished sharply in her two starts since joining the Bucci barn and she gets to face softer here. (3) WISE LATINA ships in for Lorentzon barn showing some inconsistent efforts but she does get Bartlett in the bike. (2) LUCKY PLAYER beat lesser upon arrival from Canada and she can clearly have more to offer.

Race 9

(6) FRANNEY LOVE DAT was bottomed from the pocket last week but she gets Bartlett back in the bike and should be forwardly placed. (7) TWICE AN ANGEL was very sharp in victory in her last two out of town. (4) CAN'T CATCH KEY ran ok in her local debut but never really fired her best; she can be better after that needed trip.

Race 10

(3) BRICKMAN raced willingly in his two starts at The Big M after a series of qualifiers and that form should translate well here. (2) BULLY PULPIT is another who should be stronger after last week's effort. (4) CANDELL ships in for the Takter barn, picks up the leading driver and is an obvious threat.

Race 11

(4) HUSTLING CHARLEY broke leaving last week; give him one more chance in this wide-open 2016 finale. (2) SPENDABUCKONME returns to Bartlett and the Milici trainee should be more involved than he was last week. (1) STIRLING ESCORT faces tougher off a trip-sitting win but he did look good in that effort.
