At the Gate - Sunday
By Mike Dempsey
California Chrome disposed of his nine overmatched foes with ease on Saturday in the $180,000 Winter Challenge at Los Alamitos, his next to last race of his career, returning $2.10.
The Art Sherman trainee used the race as a prep for his final career start which will come on Jan. 28 in the inaugural running of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park.
Jockey Victor Espinosa took the long way around the Los Al oval, keeping California Chrome wide much of the trip and he accelerated in the stretch to draw off to win by a dozen lengths with ease.
He stopped the timer in the 1 1/16 mile test in a track record setting 1:40.02, shattering the previous mark of 1:40.82 which was set by Uncle Lino on April 30 when he won the California Chrome Stakes.
We had another good day at Gulfstream Park on Saturday with four winners on top. Among the winners was the Todd Pletcher trained Faja, who drifted up from a 3-1 morning line to pay $15.80 with longshot Truly a Moon Shot completing a recommended exacta that paid $323.20, and we hit the trifecta for a $1 that paid $1,474.20.
We had six winners on top on Thursday followed by four more top winners on Friday. Hopefully we can keep it going today as I still have a little Christmas shopping to do.
Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:
GP Race 1 Clm $16,000 (12:35 ET)
#1 Crazy Bull 6-1
#3 Geffenstein 9-2
#4 Hidden Vow 2-1
#10 Very Very Stella 6-1
Analysis: Crazy Bull was off a beat slow and made up some ground late to rally for fourth last out in the slop going seven furlongs in a race taken off the turf. The gelding beat $16,0000 non-winners of three in his last outing on turf off a 3 1/2 month break. The runner up in that race was Dynamic Decision, who came back to beat $16,000 non-winners of three in his next outing. Third off the bench here and back on his favorite surface.
Geffenstein set the early fractions and weakened to finish fourth last out against $8,000 foes as the beaten favorite. He won for that tag two back and has won 4 of his 13 trips over the turf here. He can handle the step up to $16,000 as these are not much tougher than he has been facing in his recent starts.

#9 Starship Thor 9-2
#6 Little Baker 4-1
#3 Banzai Charge 6-1
#8 More Mia 7-2
Analysis: Starship Thor prompted the early pace and could not match strides late with the winner in a runner up fish last out against Alw-1 optional claimers in his first go off a two month break. He beat $16,000 non-winners of three at Monmouth Park three back and was beaten just a neck two back against Alw-1 optional claimers. He looks well spotted here dropping in for a $16,000 tag for the Cibelli barn that is off to a good start at the meeting, winning with 4 of her first 11 starters.
Little Baker makes his first start since June where he beat Alw-1 optional claimers here at this distance. he beat $10,000 claimers tow back here and has won 4 of 11 overall on the turf here. Decent looking works on the morning tab fort the Ziadie barn.

AQU Race 8 The Gravesand (2:45 ET)
#2 Stallwalkin' Dude 9-5
#1 Summer Revolution 5-2
#8 Life in Shambles 4-1
#3 Drama King 15-1
Analysis: Stallwalkin' Dude tracked the early pace and finished gamely in a tough neck loss at 4-5 last out in the Fall Highweight 'Cap (G3). He won the Bold Ruler 'Cap (G3) two back at Belmont Park going seven furlongs. He has earned triple digit Beyers in four of his last five starts and likes a wet track, having won 5 of 11 on off going. He has not been quite a s good on the inner track but should be able to handle this group.
Summer Revolution prompted the early pace and could not go with the winner late in a runner up finish against Alw-2 optional claimers. He cuts back to six furlongs here and this guy earned slid numbers at seven furlongs, beating Alw-1 foes and running fourth in the King's Bishop (G1). The RRod barn has been on a roll and this guy posted a couple of bullet works since his last outing.
