At the Gate - Thursday
By Mike Dempsey

The excitement is building for Saturday’s $12 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) where we have a showdown between California Chrome and Arrogate.

However, let’s not forget we have 11 other races on the card and a half dozen are stakes races. While the Pegasus looks like a two-horse race, at least on paper, the remainder of the card is going to be a handicapping challenge.

The stakes action on Saturday will start in the third race, the $100,000 Hurricane Bertie (G3) for fillies and mares going seven furlongs. Eight go to the post led by Curlin’s Approval, runner up in the Rampart (G2) in her last outing.

The $400,000 Poseidon Handicap was designed as a backup plan for connections that could not get into the Pegasus Cup and it drew a solid field of nine older runners.

Stanford, the gate to wire winner of the Harlan’s Holiday (G3) figures to be a short price for trainer Todd Pletcher.

The $125,000 Ladies’ Turf Sprint drew a wide-open field of 12 that will go five furlongs on turf. The turf rails will be down for the first time since October, and the turf could favor horses racing toward the inside part of the turf course.

The $125,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint also drew a field of 12. The headliner is Mongolian Saturday, winner of the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) at Keeneland.

The $200,000 La Prevoyante Handicap (G3) will be another tough race to handicap. A field of 12 is led by Via Borghese winner Paige and E.P. Taylor (G1) runner up Suffused.

The W.L. McKnight Handicap (G3) is the race preceding the Pegasus Cup and drew a dozen. The main contenders are Red Smith (G3) runner up Danish Dynaformer, last year’s winner Charming Kitten, and $2 million earner Twilight Eclipse.

I will have my full card report up for Pegasus World Cup Day by Friday evening.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Clm $16,000N3L (12:35 ET)
#5 Miss Otis 8-5
#4 Forever for Always 7-2
#3 Melody Croon 9-2
#2 Yes Mongolia 15-1

Analysis: Miss Otis drops into an easier spot here for the Kenneally barn that has been sending out live runners at the meeting, 10 of 19 landing in the exacta. The filly was not a threat last out in an eighth place finish against Alw-2 optional claimers on the turf at Tampa Bay Downs. She has been facing much tougher than this group and picked up her maiden win on turf at Churchill Downs back in Sept. of '15. She gets a jock upgrade here to Castellano.

Forever for Always stalked the early pace while wide much of the trip and finished evenly in a fourth place finish last out at this level. The third place finisher Cajun Queen came back to beat $16,000 non-winners of three in her next outing on Jan. 13. She should be rolling late for the Antonucci barn that is having a cold meeting (1 for 32).

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 4,5 / 2,3,4,5
TRI: 4,5 / 2,3,4,5 / 2,3,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 9 OClm $62,500N2X (4:32 ET)
#2 Yellow Chips 7-2
#1 He's Got Talent 5-2
#5 Island Town 9-2
#6 Flashy Jewel 4-1

Analysis: Yellow Chips made a mild late rally to finish fourth last out going seven furlongs at this condition last out. The colt was a good second two back in the restricted Tamarac behind a talented runner in Zulu. It looks as if he should get some pace to run at and he passed his first allowance condition at six furlongs.

He's Got Talent was a sharp winner last out against Alw-1 optional claimers off nearly a three month break. The Navarro trainee has won three of his six trips over the main track here in his career. The barn is 25% winners with runners coming back off a 45-180 day layoff. he does not need to move forward much off his last effort to be in the mix here.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 1,2 / 1,2,5,6
TRI: 1,2 / 1,2,5,6 / 1,2,3,5,6

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Gulfstream Park
R1: #2 Yes Mongolia 15-1
R3: #4 Bank On Jon 8-1
R5: #7 Learaig 15-1
R6: #2 Miss Visconti 12-1
R8: #9 Somethingelse 8-1
R10: #6 Little Queen 8-1
R11: #6 Leroy’s Image 8-1

Good luck today!

# 2 WELL TO DO 4/5
# 4 HUXLEY 25/1
# 6 ATLAS ALLIANCE N 12/1

We've got a feeling WELL TO DO is going to get the score. Could be the best in the group of horses here, showing very nice stats of late. Average speed is a solid 85. Very likely the class of the group with an average rating of 82. A nice selection. Could most likely beat this group of horses given the 88 TrackMaster Speed Rating recorded in his most recent contest. HUXLEY - The handicapping group saw this horse's name in a comic strip. Call it our coffee house play, worth a small bet. ATLAS ALLIANCE N - This entrant looks very good considering the high class statistics. Don't throw out of any exotics.

CONSORTIUM*CHOICES

# 5 WATT A FUNNY FACE 2/1
# 2 TWIN B J J 5/2
# 1 GOOD LUCK KATHY 7/2

WATT A FUNNY FACE is the best bet in this gathering. Worth looking at here on the basis of the numbers in the TrackMaster speed fig department alone. This fine animal has shown us ability in its prior races, just look at the 75 avg class rating. Should play well for this race. The brain trust happens to know that when you put Plante and Mauro together really good results happen frequently. TWIN B J J - With a respectable 65 speed rating last time out, will most likely be a factor in this contest. The handicapping group happens to know that when you put Carroll and Megens together formidable results are not far behind. GOOD LUCK KATHY - When starting from the 1 hole, a much better than average win percentage has resulted. Has a formidable shot in this event, if she can perform to her back racing class.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 7 SOUTHSIDE WARRIOR 5/2

# 4 CHICORY BLUE 5/1

# 5 GENERAL DOWNS 7/2

SOUTHSIDE WARRIOR has a competitive shot to take this race. Earned a solid speed rating in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest. CHICORY BLUE - Will likely be one of the front-runners of the bunch going into the halfway point of the outing. Had one of the most competitive Equibase speed figs of this group of horses in this race in his last race. GENERAL DOWNS - The equipment change of blinkers going off today will almost certainly make a difference. He has a formidable distance/surface win record - 1 / 3.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 5 BUDDY'S NO FOOL 3/1

# 2 MONTY HAUL 8/5

# 4 NEBIKON 20/1

BUDDY'S NO FOOL figures to be the bet in here. Potts has a win percent of 19 over the last month. Has been running very well lately and will most likely be up on the lead early on. Wagerers should probably feel comfortable with this pick given Potts's recent profits at the window. MONTY HAUL - Demonstrates the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 89 speed rating which is one of the most competitive in this field. Could best this group based on the speed figure - 85 - of his last outing. NEBIKON - Could beat this group given the 79 speed fig posted in his last outing. The average class fig alone makes this one a key contender.

Santa Anita - Race #1 - Post: 1:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 76

Rating:

#2 FORTHE LOVOF PATTY (ML=8/1)
#3 BELLA BE QUICK (ML=2/1)

FORTHE LOVOF PATTY - Trainer Harrington moves this horse to a lower class rank to face a lower level today. Look for a strong effort in this race. Arroyo rode this horse for the initial time last out and comes right back in today's contest. Classic handicapping angle - 3rd or 4th start after a layoff generally leads to a big effort. Should run big today. Forgive the out of the money finish on the off track last time around the track. Without a sloppy track, has a good chance right here in this race. BELLA BE QUICK - I like to wager on this handicapping theory, a horse coming back off a nice effort within the last thirty days.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SASSY ROSE (ML=5/2), #5 GOOD N NAUGHTY (ML=7/2), #7 RUN SCOUT RUN (ML=4/1),

SASSY ROSE - This steed will in all probability be near the rear of the pack as this field crosses the finish. GOOD N NAUGHTY - The finish of ninth in the last affair shows me that this horse may be going off form. RUN SCOUT RUN - Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any sort of closing ability on Jan 16th. Not easy to play any entrant in a sprint event at 4/1 when she hasn't shown any successful efforts in sprints in the last two months.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

#2 FORTHE LOVOF PATTY is the play if we get odds of 2/1 or better

Charles Town - Race #3 - Post: 7:57pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 46

Rating:

#4 SOVEREIGNTY (ML=4/1)

SOVEREIGNTY - Looking at today's class figure, this pony is meeting an easier field than last race out at Charles Town. This gelding is tops in earnings per start. Check out this horse before the race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 NAJMAH'S TRAIN (ML=7/5), #1 MANCHE (ML=7/2), #6 THREE SOCK GENERAL (ML=5/1),

NAJMAH'S TRAIN - This probable favorite may be out of shape without any recent drills. MANCHE - Charles Town has not been kind to this mount. This horse doesn't have a winning state of mind. Habitually finishes close, but no cigar. THREE SOCK GENERAL - I'd like to see more conducive recent efforts with M/L odds of 5/1. This runner ran a disappointing speed figure last out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's race running that rating.

#4 SOVEREIGNTY to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better

RACE #4 - AQUEDUCT - 1:47 PM EASTERN POST

6.0 FURLONGS WINTERIZED INNER DIRT TRACK THREE YEAR OLD FILLIES STARTER OPTIONAL CLAIMING $58,000.00 PURSE

#6 CATCHER IN THE SKY
#1 WOUNDWITHHEREYES
#3 PHANTOM SHOT
#4 CONGAREE DRIVE

#6 CATCHER IN THE SKY qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," takes a class drop (-9), is the overall speed leader in this field sprinting at 6.0 furlongs on the dirt, and has scored with a pair of "POWER RUN WINS" in her last four starts. Jockey Jose Ortiz and Trainer Linda Rice send her to the post ... they've hit the board with 56% of more than 150 entries saddled as a team to date. #1 WOUNDWITHHEREYES comes off back-to-back "POWER RUN BOARD HITS" in her last two starts, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her 2nd race back. Jockey Irad Ortiz was in her irons for that win, and is back today for his 2nd ride, gunning for another "Circle Trip."

EARLY PICK 4: 2,8,9,10/3,4/1,3,4,7/8,9 = $64

LATE PICK 4: 8,9/1,3/3,8,9/1,8 = $24

MEET STATS: 88 - 354 / $496.10 BEST BETS: 14 - 33 / $54.50

SPOT PLAYS: 11 - 32 / $56.60

Best Bet: BROOKLETSJUSTIFIED (1st)

Spot Play: SR BEACH BABE (4th)

Race 1

(3) BROOKLETSJUSTIFIED faces much easier here and he likely converts at a very short price; Pick 5 single. (2) JUST A THOUGHT was on non-advancing cover last time but he still rallied well late; exacta factor. (8) FREDDY BEAR went too fast, too soon last week. A more patient steer puts him into contention. (6) HOME JAMES is worth a look for the exotics while dropping out of the Snowshoe series.

Race 2

(8) SHOOT THE THRILL retains McNair and faces similar; call to repeat. (9) ALL B OVER fits better in a claimer and he is likely to be sent early; using. (2) TOP DOLLAR will be closing, but the question is if he will be close enough or not. (6) LADY CATERINA figures for a smaller share.

Race 3

(4) KLOOF STREET closed impressively last week but the winner was too good. She can win here if she starts up earlier. (6) AMERICAN CURVES stopped when first up on a wet track, but she had missed almost a month then. She's worth a look at a price here. (5) TEARFUL OF HAPPY picks up McNair for her 2nd start of the year; using. (2) COLLECTIVE WISDOM is another that can make some noise from close range; consider.

Race 4

(9) SR BEACH BABE was too far back and on too much cover last time, but she kept coming. She can turn the tables here with a better start. (8) CASIMIR PARDON ME was hard used throughout last week and still hung around for 3rd. She could get a slightly easier journey here, which would move her up. (2) NIPS BEACH GIRL fits this class well and is another that is a threat. (10) MATTJESTIC TEMPO circled a tiring foe on the backside and powered to a nice win off a break. Post 10 is obviously no bargain, but she's not out of this.

Race 5

(4) ALEXAS LUCK fell just short to a more experienced rival in her debut last week. She looks like one of two contenders here, the other being (3) MIA OH MY, who should threaten with this post relief. (7) MIMIS DELIGHT moves into Zeron's barn and she could make the ticket at a big price. (1) DANCING SHADOWS can take a share if she can stay flat.

Race 6

(1) ROAD LIGHT was 2nd to a solid winner last time and that followed a month break; top call. (3) DEAR DAD is worth considering making his initial start for Vanderkemp. (4) SOUTH WIN BAX showed some late interest in his seasonal debut when behind the choice. He can share here. (7) IN FOR ALOG HAUL can show a lot more if he stays flat here. He does retain the leading driver.

Race 7

(9) PUSH BACK drops to the bottom level quickly for Tackoor here. You have to expect aggression considering a claim is likely. (8) CHEYENNE FORD was closing fast last time, but he was too far back. He's a threat, but traffic woes could be his undoing. (7) VITAL SIGN should be given a look moving into Allard's stable. (4) LITTLE QUICK can pass many of these and take a small share.

Race 8

(1) SENSELESS BEAUTY returned from a long absence to register two impressive wins. I'll stick with her here. (3) XELENE BAYAMA likely has the screws tightened now and she is capable of uncorking a big mile; beware. (4) STONEBRIDGE PEARL was perfectly driven to win in the opening leg, but she may find the top two tougher this time. (8) I DEAL IN KISSES adds Lasix and goes for Allard here, but the stale qualifier date is a concern.

Race 9

(8) ELDORADO OF GOLD S curiously comes up tagged coming off a big conditioned win last week. He looks best here, but there are mixed signals. (9) TYMAL WIZARD was beaten by one that slipped up the rail while he was taking the overland route; using. (3) ALACRITY fits in this claiming class and he could be a decent price here. (6) GIRL DRAMA projects to get another minor share.

Race 10

(1) BIG CITY JEWEL makes his second start back here and he should get a smoother trip; slight nod. (8) RAFA is dropping and he will take action here. He is erratic but he can take these if he is sent to the front and allowed to keep rolling. (6) KOULTONS ROCKET is a good one to use in the lower exotics slots. (7) HIDDEN POTENTIAL is another that frequently finishes on the fringes. (5) WALTZKING HANOVER had a strange trip at Flamboro the other day when he gapped cover then finished evenly. He can take a smaller share.

Race 3 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 6 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 90 - 309 / $479.40 (-$148.60)

BEST BETS: 11 - 25 / $45.00 (-$5.00)

Best Bet: STITCH IN TIME (5th)

Spot Play: PARIS PRINCESS N (8th)

Race 1

(1) LION BRAND looked like a different horse with Lasix added and now in the Richard Johnson barn. Despite going winless in 46 starts to start his career, expect him to be odds-on in the Thursday opener. (3) MAJESTIC SUNSET does his best work at the end of the mile and in a field with plenty of early speed options, things could set up nicely. (6) BUFF was hounded on the engine and blew up late last time; can do better.

Race 2

(8) ROCKERS ALLEY went down the road to win by more than eight lengths in her last start for this claiming price. In a field lacking form, I’ll give her the slight edge. (3) HOT PATOOTIE is a proven contender at this level but hard to love at odds under 3-1 or 4-1. (4) FULL EXPLOSION got along nicely with Monti in her recent qualifier.

Race 3

(8) GREY ICE should be able to secure the front early without much trouble and might not look back in this shaky field. (7) HALL PASS HELEN certainly has the ability to win, but I just don’t like her as the potential favorite; demand value. (3) LUCKY MASS & (1) TEA PARTY POLITICS are both on the same path as they drop in class searching for form.

Race 4

(4) SAILIN METRO went out strong in July and now returns with just one qualifier under his belt. Normally I would want to see more races or a better morning effort, but this field looks pretty bad and Brett Miller did choose this guy. (7) WHATAGAMBLE has some early speed for a hot driver in Marohn. (8) LIGHTNING STRIKE hails from a barn with a 10-40 record at the meet. (5) UF FAST FEELIN may have bad form right now but has proven himself here in the past.

Race 5

(6) STITCH IN TIME takes a meaningful drop to the basement condition and should handle this group as the favorite. (4) P L HOUDINI took plenty of air and held well a week ago. Six-year-old finally gets a good post to work with after consecutive 10-holes. (9) MONTALBANO BI kept his act together in a recent qualifier, but is just as likely to break as race well. (5) SCIROCCO JAKOB adds hobbles and goes out for a new barn. I could see him spicing up the exotics.

Race 6

(3) MR BIG LOAD is capable of stepping up with a big mile and with the class drop he should bring a top effort. (2) WHO DO YOU LIKE gets a major trainer switch to Johnson and seems likely to improve. (1) MR JULIAN has some early speed and should be in striking position for an exotics slot.

Race 7

(6) GOINROUNDNCIRCLES was in against much tougher foes last Friday and should be handled more aggressively this week. (4) HERETIC FRANCO N took a bunch of air first-over on the drop to this level last time. A better trip could produce better results. (3) JARNAC should be put into play early in the mile and figures to be a major player. (9) JEWEL LEHIGH A debuts for a new barn.

Race 8

(1) PARIS PRINCESS N was used hard and tired from an outside post last Friday. There are no excuses in this spot. (6) STONEBRIDGE IDOL faded on the lead last time, but the track was not kind to pacesetters that night. He deserves another shot. (7) NEVER EVER CLEVER lacks form but gets class relief. She is certainly capable of winning with a close to top effort. (2) DETROIT RAPPER was a bit better last time out.

Race 9

(5) STORMIN RUSTLER raced evenly from the back of the pack after a post 10 start last time. Veteran campaigner has early speed in his arsenal and this seems like the perfect spot to use it. (6) I DO HANOVER showed a decent late kick after taking two months off. This guy was Brett Miller’s pick over three others. (4) I FOUND MY BEACH was claimed by a barn that finished second at big odds with their only other starter. (2) MAY DAY figures to be in play early and should stick around for a share of the exotics.

Yonkers: Thursday 1/26 Analysis
By Brewster Smith

DRF

MEET STATS: 9 - 51 / 58.20

BEST BETS: 1 - 5 / $2.80

Best Bet: HOOVES ON FIRST (1st)

Spot Play: ALBANY GIRL (3rd)

Race 1

(2) HOOVES ON FIRST moves back to her winning level from two starts back and she appears to be better than most of these; gets the call. (4) KIA KAHA N rallied to land the show spot in her latest; main threat. (1) SIMPLE SAVER N draws well and did show signs of life last out.

Race 2

(6) WINDSONG JACK California invader seems to be the speed of the speed and good to see Bartlett at the controls; the pick. (1) MARTY MONKHOUSER A gets post relief and that should help his cause; maybe. (3) ADMIRAL moves down a notch in class and needs to revert to his 12/27 trip at Monticello to contend with this group.

Race 3

(5) ALBANY GIRL is knocking at the door based on her last two tries. Has good tactical speed and with a favorable trip, she can get the job done. (2) HIPNUMBERONE put in a nice qualifier here on 1/13 and Bartlett stays in the bike; player. (6) HER OWN LAND just missed glory by only a nose; not out of this despite going back outside.

Race 4

(6) COOL DESIRE has wheeled off four straight victories, stays in same condition and is clearly the one to deny. (3) SCOOTIN FOR JOY could make some serious noise if she returns to her 1/12 trip to the post; quite possible. (1) GENTLE JANET was very wide at the 3/4 marker and just missed the victory by 1/2 length; watch out.

Race 5

(5) HUGH HEFNER N was hung out to dry approaching the 1/2 mile pole. Now the gelding gets another chance at this level to pick them up and lay them down for all the marbles. (1) MIKES POWERHOUSE Impressive qualifier at Pompano and now the 5-year-old moves to Yonkers; big threat. (6) LITTLEBITASWAGGER Gelding is knocking at the door based on his last three tries; don't overlook.

Race 6

(4) GYPSY LEATHER'S last start could be an indication he is ready to get back to the winning groove. (2) DAVID THE SAINT was sent down the road in his last trip but did not have enough gas in the tank and lasted for show money; could atone. (1) BEACHY DREAM was a sharp second last out and now receives the rail; beware.

Race 7

(1) R CAAN raced evenly and held the fourth spot last time around. Gelding could save all the ground from the fence and run these down for all the glory. (5) PAMS LEGACY showed signs of life last out and fits well in here; player. (8) SIR JON was very game in the pocket and missed the victory by a neck; post hurts tonight but he is very capable.

Race 8

(2) WHAT I BELIEVE did not fire in his last try but the good news is he has fine speed and now moves to door number two; down the road tonight. (4) SPINARAMA is clearly knocking at the door based on his two sharp efforts. (1) SOUTHERN ALLIE rallied just got up in his last start at the Meadows to greet the cameraman for pictures; must be considered.

Race 9

(2) SANTANNA ONE is on a roll scoring his second straight victory. Now he moves up the ladder for this event but his form is sharp enough to take down the hat trick. (3) BETTERLATETHNNEVER Here's another one that is seeking the three-peat but will be facing tougher foes tonight; capable. (6) ROCK ABSORBER was sent down the road in his latest for all the glory at this level; watch out again.

Race 10

(7) CANACO STAR did show good early zip in her last start but was shuffled. This might be a better spot for her to turn things around if she is given a favorable trip. (3) BABY REMIND ME was on the lead most of the way but was caught by Macho Chick in the final strides last week; big threat. (1) FREE SHOW gets post relief and that should help her cause. (8) MACHO CHICK comes off a game effort for win honors last out; post hurts tonight but she could have a say.
