At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey

The Sunshine Millions is not as big as it used to be, but we still have five stakes on Saturday’s card highlighted by the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Classic which drew a field of eight runners.

The 12-race card kicks off at noon eastern and will be a good tune up for the big day next Saturday which features the inaugural running of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1).

The Classic tomorrow is led by the Edward Plesa trained Awesome Slew, who comes in off a third-place finish in the Harlan’s Holiday (G3) in his last outing. The colt won the Smarty Jones (G3) at Parx Racing back in September.

Mark Casse sends out Piloting, who was the runner up in the Millions Classic Preview in his last outing, earning a career top speed figure in the outing.

The Classic is the final race on the card. The other stakes on the card are the $100,000 Turf, $100,000 Sprint, $100,000 Distaff, and $100,000 Filly & Mare Turf.

The weather looks perfect but it won’t be as good in New Orleans for the $200,000 Lecomte (G3) which is a Road to the Kentucky Derby points race.

A field of 12 will line up led by Louisiana Juvenile winner Saint’s Fan, Street Sense third place finisher Guest Suite and Springboard Mile runner up Totality.

I will have selections for the Lecomte in tomorrow’s column.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Md $12,500 (12:35 ET)
#6 Heavenly Lucky 3-1
#3 Vintners Special 9-5
#7 Hana's Dream 6-1
#2 Motion's First 4-1

Analysis: Heavenly Lucky stalked the early pace while saving ground, angled out and finished up well while no match for a nine-length winner in a runner up finish. The filly makes her third start off the layoff here for the Zito barn that is having a really good meeting, 5 for 24 at the meeting. The $85,000 purchase is by Lookin At Lucky out of a Polish Numbers mare that has dropped four winners, top earner stakes winner Ventana ($383,106).

Vintners Special is back on dirt here after a couple of seventh place finishes on turf versus tougher. She ran well in her debut on dirt way back in Oct. of '15. She catches an easier group here but her price may end up on the light side.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 3,6 / 2,3,6,7
TRI: 3,6 / 2,3,6,7 / 2,3,5,6,7

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 7 Md Sp Wt (3:32 ET)
#4 Tu Exageres 3-1
#1 Difference Maker 5-2
#2 Snicker 4-1
#7 Alexander David 6-1

Analysis: Tu Exageres makes his debut for the Clement barn that is 16% winners (with a +ROI) with first time starters. The gelding is by Elusive Quality out of a Yes It's True mare that has dropped three winners including one turf winner, top earner stakes winner Doctor Chit ($196,589). A couple of bullet works on the morning tab at Payson.

Difference Maker tracked the early pace, came up the inside with a good move and finished up well in a runner up finish last out, beaten two lengths in his first start off an 11-month layoff. The Nicks trainee showed some promise on dirt in his first two career starts. Nicks hits at a 26% clip with runners making their second start off a +180 day layoff.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 1,4 / 1,2,4,7
TRI: 1,4 / 1,2,4,7 / 1,2,3,4,7

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Gulfstream Park
R2: #4 Ring in the Nite 8-1
R3: #1 Vision Perfect 8-1
R5: #4 Weapons Grade 8-1
R6: #4 Final Edition 10-1
R8: #8 Sassy Astray 10-1
R10: #7 Mr. Bell 12-1

Good luck today!

# 5 IN SECRET 4/1
# 7 ADVERSITY 7/2
# 2 AMITYVILLE LINDY 8/1

Hard not to like IN SECRET as the top pick here. Take a look at this fine animal's avg speed rating of 87 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a very good wager. Had one of the most favorable speed ratings of the group of animals in his last race. Must use in your wagers. Win statistic for this driver-handler is a sparkling 24 percent - solid probability. ADVERSITY - Horoscope said take a chance today, this harness racer is as good as any to take a shot with. AMITYVILLE LINDY - Could be considered in this contest if only for the good speed fig recorded in the most recent outing. Selectors at Woodbine will notice this entrant's pace statistics are among the most solid in the grouping.

# 5 CHEYENNE ROBIN 3/1
# 3 FOR THE LADIES N 7/2
# 4 VILLAGE JESSICA 7/1

CHEYENNE ROBIN sure does look ready to take the whole enchilada. She's performing in fine form, recording substantial speed ratings. An excellent choice. A respectable class horse cannot be passed over. With an avg class figure of 91 all signs look good for this one. FOR THE LADIES N - The wagering panel always likes a proven player. This horse's high winning stat is evidence of that. Could clearly dominate this field of starters given the 87 TrackMaster Speed Rating recorded in her most recent contest. VILLAGE JESSICA - Hands down the best position at Yonkers Raceway is the 4. The win clip is very good. Could surely best this field given the 86 speed rating recorded in her most recent contest.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 2 SELECCION 5/2

# 4 ANTILLANA 3/1

# 6 MISS WHATSAPP 10/1

I think SELECCION is a decent choice. This mare has to be carefully examined just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint contests alone. With a reliable 53 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's competition. Lately Ramirez has been sizzling which may give the edge to this mare. ANTILLANA - This mare with Garcia in the irons makes her a key contender. Could beat this group of animals given the 55 speed figure garnered in her last outing. MISS WHATSAPP - The speed figure of 52 from her most recent race looks very good in here.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 1 SWANKY PRINCESS 6/1

# 7 SAMSONIAN 5/2

# 2 CAROLINA JASMINE 9/2

SWANKY PRINCESS looks to be a very strong contender. Must be given a chance based on the strong speed figure put up in the last affair. SAMSONIAN - Risk takers get an edge when playing this handler in a dirt sprint race. Garnered a quite good Equibase Speed Figure last time out. CAROLINA JASMINE - Garnered a decent speed rating last time out.

Santa Anita - Race #8 - Post: 4:30pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 74

Rating:

#3 RAINBOW SQUALL (ML=10/1)
#1 PROUD SINGER (ML=30/1)
#6 TAVASCO ROAD (ML=5/1)

RAINBOW SQUALL - Early speed is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. Gelding is a few starts into a return to racing here. Should give a big performance today. PROUD SINGER - This colt should give a good account of himself in today's affair. TAVASCO ROAD - With no past performance lines, one of the variables I look at are trainer stats, and Moger has a +56 pct ROI rate with first timers. Based on drills, I look for this gelding to run a big race. I always like to see a thoroughbred getting Lasix for the 1st time. Moger adds it on this one today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 ROCK ON DUDE (ML=3/1), #11 SHADES PLAY (ML=7/2), #5 RUNS SWEET (ML=4/1),

ROCK ON DUDE - The Brain cautions me to stay away from horses in short distance contests that haven't finished in the money in sprint affairs recently. Hasn't been doing anything at all lately. This gelding recorded a speed rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. SHADES PLAY - This questionable contender didn't go to the front end and didn't make up any ground down the stretch last time he ran. RUNS SWEET - Don't think that this gelding has value at 4/1 in today's event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Put your money on #3 RAINBOW SQUALL on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

Oaklawn Park - Race #7 - Post: 4:14pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $27,000 Class Rating: 89

Rating:

#5 MAZIETTE (ML=3/1)

MAZIETTE - This race horse should be rumbling in the lane.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 STREET CRUIZER (ML=2/1), #7 INCLUDERE (ML=7/2), #3 CASTIEL'S ANGEL (ML=6/1),

STREET CRUIZER - Just can't bet on this mount. Didn't show me anything in the last race or on Oct 1st. INCLUDERE - I find it hard to play any horse in a sprint race at 7/2 when she hasn't shown any competitive efforts in sprints in the last sixty days. CASTIEL'S ANGEL - Almost certainly won't make much of an impression this time around.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Go with #5 MAZIETTE on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds

#5 FREE N CLEAR
#3 OASIS AT MIDNIGHT

#2 LA INESPERADA, the pace profile leader in this O.C. field racing at this afternoon's distance of a mile and seventy yards on the dirt, and has hit the board in each of her last five outings, winning twice in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Irad Ortiz has been in her irons on one previous occasion,, posting a win, en route to a +120% return on investment in the process, and is back here at "The Big-A" this afternoon for his 2nd ride, gunning for back-to-back "Circle Trips." #1 TRUE HISTORY, the overall speed leader in this field, has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in four of her last five starts, including back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in his 3rd and 4th races back.

Race 1 - $40,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

PICK 5: 3/5,7,8,9/3,8,9/10/ALL = $24

EARLY PICK 4: 10/ALL/1,5,6,8/6 = $40

LATE PICK 4: 1,2,5,8/2,3,6,10/1/1,6,7 = $48

MEET STATS: 75 - 312 / $428.30 BEST BETS: 12 - 29 / $44.70

SPOT PLAYS: 9 - 28 / $44.20

Best Bet: SHES A MANIAC (4th)

Spot Play: BURNIN MONEY (2nd)

Race 1

(3) AVA N ELLA qualified well for this return and then missed a race due to a cancelled card (weather). She should be formidable here if she's still tight enough. (4) KAYS SHADOW raced well last time but she couldn't quite reach a game and determined winner. She rates highly here. (5) TEMPUS SEELSTER faces easier here and she should wake up with a much better performance. (7) P L JASMINE was decent in the Niagara series; small share predicted.

Race 2

(8) BURNIN MONEY looked like he was setting up a good rally on Monday night until the leader took off at the head of the lane, but he did close a bit of ground late. He drops and could bring a decent price here; top call. (5) IN SECRET impressively chased down a loose leader last time. He has beaten better than these before; using. (9) BUZZ raced great at a big price last time. He could do the same here, so keep him in mind for vertical bets. (7) ADVERSITY should close for a smaller share again.

Race 3

(8) EMPTYTHETILL raced okay last time, but that was off a month break and he was prepping for this series. He could pop here at a nice price. (3) BROOKLETSJUSTIFIED exploded with a life's best effort here Monday night; respect. (9) AWESOMENESS has only missed the exacta once so far and he is an obvious player. (7) CLOUSEAU HANOVER raced well here on Monday; consider.

Race 4

(10) SHES A MANIAC takes a higher tag here, which relegates her to the outer post, but she absolutely lays over these on paper. Only a horrendous trip can get her beat here. (6) DONNA PARTY improved last time when third to the choice. She looks next best. (9) WATT A FUNNY FACE could land in a good spot near the front early and take a good piece of this. (2) TOTAL KNOCKOUT woke up last week with a much better mile. She can grab a small slice here.

Race 5

(4) VOODOO CHARM moves inside after showing some mild late interest from the 10-hole last time; price play. (6) GREYSTONE LADYLIKE moves to the best post off a decent effort when leaving from further out; using. (8) MUCH ADOO should set the pace again. She will last to the wire one of these weeks. (5) MISS COCO LUCK is always around the money and she shouldn't be left off tri and super bets.

Race 6

(5) SEVERUS HANOVER was passed only by the two big favorites after opening up a big early lead last time. Slightly better rating could get him to the winner's circle. (8) DEWEYKEEPUMNWHY should threaten here if he can again overcome his frequent gait issues. (6) ELDORADO OF GOLD leaves from the best post and is steered by the leading driver; using. (1) FERRISWHEEL JUNKIE will be looking for room late and he isn't impossible if the race falls apart in deep stretch.

Race 7

(6) A PLUS lands in a good spot here and picks up McNair; top call. (7) AINSLEYNOELLE drops back to a level where she should show early speed and can threaten from close range here. (8) THREE DREAMS is likely for another minor share here. (2) NINETTE B fits well here. She should make the ticket, at a minimum.

Race 8

(5) ROCKIN WITH DEWEY drops and moves inside. She should get a more aggressive steer this time. (1) ODDS ON AMETHYST can threaten here if he stays flat. (2) EXEMPLAR steps up off a solid win and he should contend here, too. (8) HUBBY NUMBER ONE gets a better post here, which should make him a threat vs. these.

Race 9

(6) BIG YELLOW paced the best mile of his life Monday night and he is likely to bring a square price here coming right back in a stakes series; top call. (3) MANY FACETS showed promise last fall and he looks ready to roll again based on his January 15th qualifier; using. (10) SENIOR K had a good tightener for this following his Valedictory series win. He's not out of this despite drawing widest. (2) TALBOT DOMINO had a useful debut and he could pass them all if there is lots of action up front.

Race 10

(1) HOT SPOT HANOVER continues to race at a high level and she looks best vs. these. (8) DAZZLING ROCKETTE took a ton of action last week then roared by her rivals down the lane. Tab the tote for clues with this one. (5) WANDA BAYAMA should be a speed threat here and if she gets a breather, she may be tough to overhaul. (2) BET YA should get a decent trip and finish on the fringes here.

Race 11

(7) DRIVINGTHEDRAGON N returns to this circuit after winning several times in mixed company in the top class at Charlottetown. She gets Lasix and an aggressive pilot; top call. (1) BAROCKEY drops several levels and she will no doubt take lots of action. She's the one to beat. (6) CASE DISMISSED moves up off a predictable win and she can threaten racing near the front. (2) MAPLELEA will be passing rivals late for a small share. (4) NAUGHTY LADY B is a good one to use on the bottom of vertical wagers.

Meadowlands: Friday 1/20 Analysis
By Derick Giwner

DRF

Race 1 - $30,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

Race 3 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 7 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 84 - 283 / $442.40 (-$133.60)

BEST BETS: 10 - 23 / $38.80 (-$7.20)

Best Bet: ROBOCALL HANOVER (8th)

Spot Play: BULLVILLE MAGGIE (6th)

Race 1

(1) FEISTY LOVE had no chance from the word GO as she got away slowly from an outside post after three weeks on the sidelines. This mare is capable of much more and gets a huge post edge on her main competition. (9) PARIS PRINCESS N comes off a scratched-sick line and a break, which isn’t ideal. That said, if right she is probably best. (10) WINSUN FIREBALL has the early speed to overcome the bad draw, but he needs to find a way to last the mile. (7) DOWNUNDERMATTER is usually along for a small share. Maybe Brett Miller can get more out of him.

Race 2

(8) MUSCLE DIAMOND took care of business last week but faces a tougher group from a worse post this time. There does seem to be enough early speed signed on to set up his late rally at a better price than the 3-5 offered last time. (7) CROSBYS CLAM BAKE was the sharpest horse on the grounds prior to getting scratched-sick last time; obvious player. (4) WATKINS blew away his foes with Brett Miller in the bike. Perhaps he’s gained some confidence to tackle this better group.

Race 3

(3) SPORTSMUFFLER drops back down to the $10,000 claiming level where she has won consecutive starts. Brett Miller opts for #2, but I’ll take Yannick Gingras in the bike any day. (1) CANDY STYX N is another getting similar class relief. I’d expect her to be closer to the pace this time. (9) MOJARRA HANOVER could be a factor, but the field she beat back on 12-15 in this class was softer. (4) HERETIC FRANCO N gets post and class relief tonight.

Race 4

(2) I LUV BLACKHAWKRED took a tour of the track after more than four weeks off in his initial start for new trainer Scott Blackler. Four-year-old moves inside tonight and should show much more. (8) BATTLE MAGE has early speed and plenty of form; main threat. (3) ALEXANDER HANOVER has been racing well enough to think he can win given the right trip. (6) BIG EXPENSE is a must on the bottom of your exotic tickets.

Race 5

(7) CAN DO picks up Gingras this week and he did steer this 8-year-old to a lifetime best 1:52 win here last year; potential wake-up candidate. (2) DANISH DURANGO continues to drop down hoping for some racing luck. This is the first time I’ve felt he was in a good position if he brings a top effort. (6) LAUDERDALE has plenty of early zip and should be a player. (10) FOX VALLEY STEFFEN will have to hope for a strong pace to set up his late rally; could happen.

Race 6

(2) BULLVILLE MAGGIE gave me a nice run for my money at 50-1 last time. She left a bit for position and attacked first-over. Now she drops again and picks up Brett Miller. Sign me up. (3) INTOVIEW failed as the heavy chalk a week ago but looms a big threat again. (4) MELANIES SHARKETTE is plenty sharp.

Race 7

(3) WAITING ON A WOMAN faces a competitive group while coming off a string of decent lines. I’m thinking the switch to Callahan could be a difference maker. (7) WORLD CUP brings an honest effort just about every week and is a decent trip from a possible win. (6) CANADIAN WILDCAT wired them in this class a few starts back and certainly warrants some attention on your pick four tickets. (2) SHEER FLEX adds Gingras and automatically deserves at least some consideration.

Race 8

(8) ROBOCALL HANOVER was the victim of a tough trip and still held well for third last time. Gingras in the bike adds to the allure of this one, but also ensures favoritism. (9) BIG BAD BEACH comes out of the same race as the top one and should prove the top threat. (3) QUIET COVE raced a bit better with Lasix added and sometimes it takes a start for the medication to have a strong effect. (5) CC C HER BIBI is an exotics threat.

Race 9

(5) BUFFALINO HANOVER failed me last week but in a field with no clear standout, I’m inclined to take another shot. This field is loaded with early speed and maybe a change in tactics will make a difference. (4) WALLTOCOUSINS hasn’t had an ideal trip in recent weeks; very capable. (8) ITS CHOCOLATE TIME was Drew Monti’s choice over (3) MIDFIELD MAGIC & (1) BOB N TONY, but all three appear to have a legitimate chance.

Race 10

(4) BROADIES SONG moves down the claiming ladder while all switching barns. Nine-time winner in 2016 can wake up at a price. (2) I FOUND MY BEACH is back at The Meadowlands while facing horses he can beat. (5) AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL double-drops below the level of the claim for trainer Eric Foster; mixed feelings. (9) ITALIAN REBEL seems like he could be competitive with the right trip.

Race 11

(2) IDEAL NUGGETS wasn’t going very far from post 10 last Friday. She draws more favorably now in a field without much early speed and should get aggressive. (4) UF DRAGON’S QUEEN is the other mare in the field that should be on the move early; good trip likely. (6) ABBIJADE HANOVER has found her form in recent weeks and could take plenty of tote action with Gingras now in the bike. (7) NOT BEFORE EIGHT has been racing well for the last month.

Race 12

(4) STONEBRIDGE IDOL put in a solid mile in his first start since October and finds a pretty soft spot this week. (3) LAZURUS dropped down in class for five consecutive weeks but was stuck in post 10 when he reached the basement last time; chance to wake up. (8) HALL PASS HELEN has been racing well, but she did get away with easy fractions in her win last week. (10) P L HOUDINI found the winner’s circle the last time she raced in the NW3500 class.

Race 13

(1) MAJO JUST DO IT has a win in this class a few starts back and seems to have caught a field with enough early speed to set up his late move. Veteran should offer some value with Brett Miller opting off. (4) OUR CULLENSCROWN N could be interesting if others to his outside elect not to show speed. (9) SALEVSTER STALLION gets a nice driver change upon arrival and seems fast enough to play with this group. (3) FOOLS GOLD double-drops down the claiming ladder but has no form.

Yonkers: Friday 1/20 Analysis
By Brewster Smith

DRF

MEET STATS: 6 - 41 / $39.40

BEST BETS: 1 - 4 / $2.80

Best Bet: HEY KOBE (10th)

Spot Play: GREYSTONE CASH (2nd)

Race 1

(2) JOHNNY Z was very sharp for the placing last time out and this 11-year-old gelding has every right to put his best foot forward. (1) N J LAW should appreciate the move to the rail; maybe. (5) ROCKEN CAMNATION rallied strongly to nail down the show spot in his recent attempt; watch out.

Race 2

(3) GREYSTONE CASH was sluggish in his last try, but the good news is he moves inside and should flash speed against these; threat at his best. (4) ETHAN HANOVER was a game second missing glory by only three-quarters of a length; main danger. (1) AUTOMATIC SLIMS gets post relief and should be a factor from the fence.

Race 3

(1) NOBLES FINESSE was sent down the road in his latest for all the marbles. Gelding retains the rail and gets the services of Brennan, so two straight is clearly not out of the question. (4) LYONS AGAIN was on the lead most of the way, but was nailed for win honors by a pocket-rocket Given up Terror recently. (8) CARTOON DADDY makes his 2017 debut from an outside slot, but is quite capable.

Race 4

(1) MAINLAND KEY N is knocking at the door based on his last four starts and the move from the 8-hole to the rail can have this 12-year-old pro greet the cameraman for pictures. (5) WINTER BLAST blew the doors off his competition last time out but now will have to get it done against a better group; possible. (8) GRIN FOR MONEY got the job done wire to window last out; post hurts but could contend with these.

Race 5

(1) CAVIART CARI ANN has fine speed and now she moves to the rail; big threat for win honors. (6) MOMAS GOT A GUN closed strongly to nail down the place spot last week; could move forward. (3) ICOMMANDMYSPIRIT took charge at the half-mile marker but did not have enough gas in the tank and held show money in her last try; watch out.

Race 6

(6) HIDDEN LAND is a very consistent mare that knows how to get the job done. A favorable trip can make her night a winning one. (5) BETTOR N BETTER grabbed the lead turning for home but was caught by some of these last out; big threat. (7) EMPRESS DEO is a Dover invader that has been in the exacta picture in her last six starts; not out of this.

Race 7

(1) WRANGLER MAGIC was on the engine most of the way, but was nailed for the score by Delightful Dragon last time around. She is clearly knocking at the door and the move to door number one can put her right into the winner's circle. (3) TRUTH AND LIBERTY just missed the victory by a head in her Meadowlands finale; main danger. (5) TYRA has been facing open foes at Dover and she is not out of this by far.

Race 8

(2) INTREPID HALL raced evenly in his last start, so that might be an indication he can get back into the winning grove if he mind his manners. (1) MACHMILLIONS gets serious post relief and Brennan keeps the faith; big player. (8) A PLUS HANOVER does not get the best of post positions but gelding fits with these; don't overlook.

Race 9

(2) COPPER COAST A was a good third last out and now this 7-year-old gets a cozy post to get back to his winning ways; we shall see. (4) ADDWATER was sent down the road en route to an easy victory last time around; factor again. (1) MIGHTY PERUVIAN N leaves the 8-hole for post one and has tactical speed; beware.

Race 10

(2) HEY KOBE closed well to grab the show spot against better last time out. Mare seems to be back to winning form and it is good to see Dube stays in the bike; the pick. (3) FOR THE LADIES N needs to revert to her 12-16 try to be a factor against these; possible. (5) CHEYENNE ROBIN moves down in class and gets a better post; watch out.
