At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey

We have a big day coming up at Gulfstream Park on Saturday with a 12-race card that features three graded takes, all drawing competitive fields that will make for good betting opportunities.

The first on the card is the $150,000 Marshua’s River (G3) for fillies and mares, four-year-olds and upward at 1 1/16 miles on the turf course.

A field of eight will go to the post led by 9-5 morning line favorite Isabella Sings, who took the field gate to wire to win the My Charmer Handicap (G3) at Gulfstream Park West on Nov. 26 in her last outing. She has won seven of her 18 career starts, all on turf.

The $200,000 Ft. Lauderdale (G2) drew a full field of 12 that will go 1 1/16 miles on turf. The Bryan Lynch trained Heart to Heart is the 3-1 morning line favorite.

The six-year-old son of English Channel is perfect in his three trips over the Gulfstream Park turf, last out winning the El Prado in gate to wire fashion.

The $150,000 Hal’s Hope (G3) drew a solid group of nine, the race contested at one mile on the main track. The Ed Plesa trained Mr. Jordan is the 5-2 morning line favorite. He won the Millions Classic Preview at Gulfstream Park West in his last start.

His main foes figure to be Tommy Macho (9-2), fourth in the Richard W. Small last out at Laurel Park and Realm (3-1), who was third in the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) in his last outing.

I will have selections for the Hal’s Hope in tomorrow’s column and my full card report for Saturday’s action will be available tonight.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Clm $12,500B (12:35 ET)
2 Rilla 8-1
3 Sherry Angel 4-1
5 Flash Jak 3-1
1 Racen 7-2

Analysis: Rilla returns off a two-month break after a runner up finish last out at Churchill Downs against restricted $8,000 claimers. The winner Ultra Arumba came back to beat open $16,000 claimers in her next start on Nov. 20 at Churchill Downs. Our top pick was claimed out of her last outing by the Sancal barn that is showing a 1 for 10 mark first off the claim. She has landed in the money in 7 of 10 career starts and picks up Lopez. Decent value if this gal goes off near her 8-1 morning line.

Sherry Angel chased the early pace and finished evenly in a third place finish last out against Alw-1 optional claimers. She drops into a softer spot here, the nine-time winner facing non-winners of three or a race in six months. Her last win came over the main track here last May.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 9-2 or better.
EX: 2,3 / 1,2,3,5
TRI: 2,3 / 1,2,3,5 / 1,2,3,5,7
Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 8 Md $50,000 (4:02 ET)
5 Conquest Lucknlove 4-1
9 Sistine Sista 7-2
2 September Issue 15-1
8 City Section 9-2

Analysis: Conquest Lucknlove drops back in for a tag here after setting the early fractions and weakening to finish seventh last out over good ground at the Big A. Brown lost this mare for $75,000 and it was a good sing to see him claim him right back in her next start. Three back when last in for a tag she was beaten just a nose. She has landed in the money in 7 of her 10 starts without getting her diploma but looks capable of handling this group. She has seven sibs that are winners and five have won on turf.

Sistine Sista drops in for a tag for the first time in her career here for the Arnold barn. Last out the filly tracked the early pace, made a good middle move to get to the front heading for home but she did not have enough left late, weakening to finish fourth. Two back at Keeneland going nine furlongs she was a decent third behind repeat winner Burma Road, who beat Alw-1 foes at Churchill Downs in her next outing.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 5,9 / 2,5,8,9
TRI: 5,9 / 2,5,8,9 / 2,5,8,9,10

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Gulfstream Park
R1: #2 Rilla 8-1
R2: #2 Simon the Cyrenian 10-1
R3: #4 Rare Mix 8-1
R4: #9 Mistiz 20-1
R6: #5 Dointhewatusi 15-1
R8: #2 September Issue 15-1

Good luck today!

# 5 TORRINGTON 6/1
# 10 PONTIAC LUCK 9/2
# 3 ONESPORTONLY 7/2

Really keen on the chance of TORRINGTON taking down the winner's share in this event. Have an instinct this one might thieve in this contest. If performance in the last race is representative, this entrant will have a very competitive shot for this one. High last race TrackMaster Speed Rating. Very high winning percentage makes this interesting entrant an excellent selection to take home the dough. PONTIAC LUCK - Talk about a dynamic duo, De Long and Stewart have some of the best driver/conditioner markings at the track. Extremely profitable driver-trainer pair, with a 21 ROI when working with each other. ONESPORTONLY - Surely think these two have a special working relationship. Morgan sending the horse out means a very nice chance to get the score. Sutton is racking up the wins recently. Outstanding win percentage makes this harness racer our pick

# 7 LEGGS MATTER 7/2
# 4 AMOUREUSE HANOVER 12/1
# 5 ONE TOO MANY 5/1

LEGGS MATTER is the most competitive bet in this race. His 84 average has this horse among the best TrackMaster speed figs in here. AMOUREUSE HANOVER - Has a bang-up shot this time, if she can perform to her back racing class. Performing very well, recorded a huge speed rating in her last outing (79). ONE TOO MANY - More wins than is normal have been recorded by standardbreds lining up behind the 5 position at Woodbine. It's often dangerous to consider solely based on class, but this mare has among the top class figures of the group of animals.

# 4 SUNSHINE HEAT 3/1

# 5 TAYLORNATOR 2/1

# 6 KEYLIMAR RAIN 5/1

SUNSHINE HEAT is my choice. With one of the best jockeys in terms of profits at the window, don't count this mare out. With a very good 53 speed rating last time out, will surely be a factor in this contest. Her 65 average has this mare with among the best Equibase speed figs in this race. TAYLORNATOR - Exhibits the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 59 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the strongest in this field. Well above average win clip at this distance/surface. KEYLIMAR RAIN - Could best this group based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 59 - of her last affair.

RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 6 GUNNY 4/1

# 3 BLAZING MISS 2/1

# 9 CHISELED IN STONE 8/1

I think GUNNY is a strong choice. Should be considered here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. Will likely be one of the front-runners of the pack going into the midpoint of the contest. Recently Sanchez has been on fire which may give the edge to this filly. BLAZING MISS - Recent figures for the rider - 21 win percent - make this filly stand out in this field. Meeting a much less demanding field of horses than last time out.

Charles Town - Race #9 - Post: 10:47pm - Maiden Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 50

Rating:

#4 WILD AFFAIR (ML=3/1)

WILD AFFAIR - Quite frequently, I play a maiden that finished in the place spot easily ahead of the 3rd place horse in her last race. Trainer Weeks moves this one to a lower class level to face a lower class of horses. Look for a sharp effort with this class drop. Ranked at the top of the list in earnings per race. Another confirmation that this horse is the class of the race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 PATRIOT LADY (ML=5/2), #2 MORNING VOW (ML=4/1), #6 INTO WILDERNESS (ML=5/1),

PATRIOT LADY - Not easy to play this less than sharp equine this time. Make her show you something in a sprint contest before you bet on her in a race of 7 furlongs. Hasn't raced or had any morning drills since Dec 7th. Not much value on this favorite. MORNING VOW - Mediocre speed figure last time around the track at Charles Town at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't feel this pony will improve too much in today's event. INTO WILDERNESS - This mount likes to be there at the wire, but doesn't usually finish on top. Forget the top spot. When examining today's Equibase class figure, she will have to register a better rating than last time around the track to compete in this dirt sprint.

Gulfstream Park - Race #10 - Post: 5:02pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 83

Rating:

#14 REDISCOVER (ML=6/1)
#10 TAP THE PISTOL (ML=6/1)
#2 LOOKIN UP (ML=4/1)

REDISCOVER - Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this one has the highest Equibase speed figure for the distance-surface. Looking at today's class rating, this horse is meeting an easier group than last out at Gulfstream Park. TAP THE PISTOL - This racer may have too much power on the grass for the rest of the field. When the field turns for home, he could put these away. The 83 latest race rating looks sound in the TrackMaster PPs. LOOKIN UP - Don't often see a profitable return on investment like +20. This rider/trainer twosome has done well together over the last year.

Vulnerable Contenders: #13 CRAFTY KITTEN (ML=3/1), #11 LITTLE SKY (ML=9/2), #5 VINO BLANCO (ML=5/1),

CRAFTY KITTEN - This colt raced well above average on Dec 22nd finishing second, but hasn't even visited the track since then. Not really a good sign. LITTLE SKY - Would have to get much more than the morning line of 9/2 to wager on this thoroughbred. VINO BLANCO - This entrant ran a substandard speed figure last race out. He shouldn't improve and will likely suffer defeat in today's race running that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

#14 REDISCOVER is the play if we get odds of 3/1 or better

#1 WONDER GAL
#5 HIGHWAY STAR
#2 ALWAYS ON MY MIND
#4 CHORUS LINE

The Ladies Handicap which was Inaugurated at the Jerome Park Racetrack in 1868, it is the oldest stakes race in the U.S. exclusively for fillies and mares. Here in the 147th running of this stakes event (which was originally scheduled to be run on January 7, 2017 - but was cancelled due to weather conditions),, #4 WONDER GAL, the overall speed leader in this field racing at, or about, today's distance of a mile and seventy yards on the dirt, and has produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in each of her last five outings, hitting the board in a pair, including a BLISTERING, 12-length, "POWER RUN WIN" in her 4th race back. #5 HIGHWAY STAR is the pace profile leader, and has won three straight, including back-to-back, "POWER RUN WINS" in her last two starts. Jockey Angel Arroyo has been in her irons on two previous occasions, winning 'em both, en route to a +560% return on investment in the process, and Arroyo is back today for his 3rd ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win."

MEET STATS: 70 - 281 / $428.30 BEST BETS: 11 - 26 / $39.10

SPOT PLAYS: 8 - 25 / $38.20

Best Bet: IN SECRET (8th)

Spot Play: CASE DISMISSED (10th)

Race 1

(2) ABSOLUT SEELSTER shipped to Flamboro for two easy wins now returns with a recency edge on his foes while looking for five straight; top call. (7) LEGGS MATTER took a ton of action last time and he proved to be live but he had a horrendous trip. He can go much better here. (9) SWAN FOR DEE closed ground late last time vs. a tough winner. She should take at least a slice here. (1) PREMIER GLITTER also showed some late interest last time and she could better this placing.

Race 2

(8) COUGAR GAL had a terrible trip when starting from the second tier at London last week but she should be on a front-end mission here. (5) SHES A MANIAC comes in off a sharp win but has now missed more than a month's action; mixed signals. (2) RUMOUR MILL goes for the hot Allard barn here but is another that has missed more than a month's action. She should contend if she is tight enough. (9) ALEXAS HOPE fits better in this class and she can contend if she stays flat this time.

Race 3

(6) READY ANY TIME has been powering home but falling just short. A slightly better trip and a bit of luck gets her into the winner's circle here. (8) MAJOR MUSCLE could clear quickly vs. these, which would give her a decent chance, possibly at a square price. (3) WITHAHEARTTOMATCH steps up off a win where she converted off a sweet trip, but it's not hard to envision her getting a similarly good trip here. (5) STONEBRIDGE PEACE should be passing rivals late to take a slice.

Race 4

(3) KEYSTONE DYLAN drops back in for a tag and he should get a good pace setup here and pounce late. (9) MR MACH JIMMY couldn't withstand a rival's wicked third 1/4 brush last time, but he did show some grit to come again late. He could take these a long way. (8) TOP DESIRE is in great form and can't be dismissed here. (2) EAST END should be able to take a share off a following trip.

Race 5

(5) LOVETHEWAYYOULOOK, by not getting any checks in her last two starts, gets to take a big class drop here and she should be tough. (1) BERNADETTE moves inside and is an obvious contender here. (6) PRETTY HOT was a sharp winner in this class two back and she stayed active during the break racing in the top class at London. She's another obvious contender. (8) AINSLEYNOELLE will be heard from early and likely stick around for a smaller share.

Race 6

(5) STUARTS DYNASTY raced much better last time which could be an indication that he is ready to break out of a long slump; call to upset. (7) EXEMPLAR has been facing much tougher regularly and he is likely to be put into play early by Filion here; using. (1) SMOOTHER RIDE finished ahead of the choice last time and he is in with a shot here, but post 1 isn't the greatest for a slow leaver. (4) MAKER A YANKEE is a good one to use underneath - notice the 10 slices from 25 tries last year.

Race 7

(6) ARTISTIC MADISON kept a string of good performances going last week with a strong 2nd to a class-dropping winner. She should be tough in here again. (1) WANDA BAYAMA has been on fire since returning to Larocque's barn. She could be good enough to withstand this sharp class rise. (3) KILLEAN FINALE will be riding the inside looking for room in the lane and if she finds some, she could kill your Pick 4 tickets if you don't use her. (8) REQUEST FOR PAROLE dropped, popped now she moves back up; minor share predicted.

Race 8

(9) IN SECRET lays over this group if he is put into the race early, which is what you would expect with the drop in class here. (4) AMITYVILLE LINDY was a solid winner in this class two back and looks the only real threat to the choice. (3) SCARY GOOD can rally for a smaller share at a price here. (7) SEVERUS HANOVER raced better last time and he is another to consider for the bottom of vertical wagers at a price.

Race 9

(1) P L HURRICANE has never been better. She should get a decent trip here; call to repeat. (5) SANDBETWEENURTOES missed some time but she had a qualifier which should help keep her tight. She is a Pick 4 must-use. (3) MS MAC N CHEESE makes a great living taking home smaller shares in this class which seems likely here again. (2) RUBIS PRESCOTT is sent out by the hit Nixon barn and she is worth a look at what is sure to be a big price here.

Race 10

(6) CASE DISMISSED had a tightener now she drops a level and gets McNair which has been a great angle at this meet; top call. (8) NAUGHTY LADY B also drops and shakes the white-hot Wanda Bayama this time; using. (4) THREE DREAMS is always around the money and she will get a lucky trip one of these times. (2) WILDCAT BEAUTY rarely wins but she fits this class and should share. (1) MAPPOS MOENHAY should improve with the move inside and she can take a smaller piece of this purse.

Race 7 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 79 - 257 / $407.20 (-$106.80)

BEST BETS: 10 - 21 / $38.80 (-$3.20)

Best Bet: INTOVIEW (9th)

Spot Play: WATKINS (5th)

Race 1

(4) HALL PASS HELEN typically closes well from a bit too far back. The slightly better post tonight should help. (5) RAVEN VICTORY should fit very nicely with this group but hasn’t seen action in more than a month. (1) BAD DAY BLACK ROCK had some issues here last time. Let’s give him one more shot.

Race 2

(8) BUFF has shown some guts in winning two straight starts. Well-bred 4-year-old gets another free ride at the same level. (9) WINDSUN MISSION was on her way to victory when she blew up in the shadow of the wire; chance if she stays flat. (5) EURO GAP took care of business against lesser on December 22 and should race well in his final start before the sale Monday. (6) VIRGIL CAINE picks up Brett Miller off a decent effort.

Race 3

(1) STARSABOVEALLERAGE two-moved and tired versus a better field two weeks ago. Gelding drops in class tonight and should still provide value. (7) MONTALBANO BI could crush this field but is extremely unreliable. You have to use him but I wouldn’t single him. (6) O’WOW has raced well at this level in the past. (4) DOWNUNDERMATTER picks up Campbell and should be along for at least a share.

Race 4

(2) ROCKERS ALLEY was done in by a bad trip last Friday; prior form is fine. (6) ROBOCALL HANOVER comes off a sharp mile but might need to go a bit faster here. (8) MELANIES SHARKETTE got Bongiorno’s call over #6 and has been racing well lately.

Race 5

(5) WATKINS seems to have some hidden form and gets a huge driver change to Brett Miller tonight. He should take care of business as the odds-on chalk. (4) FLYING ISA N had some traffic trouble and finished up nicely when clear last time. (1) HYWAY MARCUS is very capable of winning but could also break at any time; tough call. (7) WINDSONG ILLUSION has won two straight but faces much tougher.

Race 6

(1) MUSCLE DIAMOND couldn’t make up enough ground last week after missing four weeks of action. The better post and quick turnaround should help him turn the tables. (8) CROSBYS CLAM BAKE is in career form but could find it a bit tougher to make the front this week. (5) B YOYO was a bit flat from off the pace last time but can compete here if on his game.

Race 7

There are plenty of ways to go here with some sharp horses stepping up and also class droppers. (5) BULLVILLE MAGGIE had some traffic at the back last week but more importantly, she just races better near the front. Dropping down this week, I expect we’ll see speed. (6) UF DRAGON’S QUEEN comes out of the same race as the top choice and lured Miller off that one; has speed, too. (7) NOT BEFORE EIGHT will be at the mercy of the pace but is very much capable. (1) MAC’S SECURE was rolling home last time and is in fine form.

Race 8

(5) BUFFALINO HANOVER gets a key driver change here and a perfect post to take advantage of it. (2) HILL I AM continues to climb the ladder and race well. (9) DREAM ROCKER also gets a nice driver switch. This plodder could improve with the more aggressive Miller taking over, but the price will almost certainly be lower than warranted. (4) ONDA DI MARE is an exotics threat and a possible perfect trip upsetter.

Race 9

(5) INTOVIEW gets some class relief and should flex her muscles as the public’s choice. (1) ROYAL KNOCKOUT also moves down a bit after a decent qualifier. (3) LET HER ROCK has been racing better of late. (8) SPORTSMUFFLER could have a say if Miller can get her a trip near the front.

Race 10

(5) HERE COMES SAM has looked like a new horse since adding hobbles and entering the Richard Johnson barn; ride the wave. (3) TYSON looked good in his return qualifiers and even beat Buff, who has done well lately. Sale-bound 4-year-old could pull off an upset. (1) BATTLE MAGE raced well despite a tough trip last time; clear player if the top one has any issues. (6) SHADY MCCOY was a decent second behind the top choice last week.

Race 11

(3) WORLD CUP is the best horse in the race if he shows up with a top effort. As long as he isn’t the favorite, I’ll be on board. (4) LAUDERDALE drops down and seems likely to be cutting the pace. (9) MAJOR MATTER moves into a new barn and is eligible to wake up in a hurry; Lasix added. (6) CAN DO gets class relief; capable.

Race 12

(1) STONEBRIDGE IDOL got a meaningful qualifier under his belt after a couple of months on the bench and simply finds the perfect spot tonight. (7) FEISTY LOVE picks up a catch-driver and should improve greatly. (2) DETROIT RAPPER drops down again. He has to wake up sooner or later. (10) LAZURUS is also moving down the class ladder; post hurts.

Race 13

(8) ALEX BULLVILLE knows how to win at this track and the trainer gets out of the bike this week. (4) FRATERNITY left and was a solid second behind a very sharp winner last Saturday; big threat. (5) NORTHERN PRIZE and (7) MR BIG LOAD are both getting positive driver changes and either could get the job done. (3) JUST N BERLANDER has a string of decent efforts to his credit.

Yonkers: Friday 1/13 Analysis
By Brewster Smith

DRF

MEET STATS: 3 - 11 / $14.40

BEST BETS: 1 - 1 / $2.80

Best Bet: LYONS AGAIN (2nd)

Spot Play: WRANGLER MAGIC (5th)

Race 1

(8) ANNUITY makes his return to Yonkers where this gelding has done his best; can get the job done despite the move to door number eight. (6) TAURANGA was very wide and he lost all chance last out at the Meadowlands; could be a player against these. (3) ABBEYLARA gets Brennan and could make some noise with the right trip.

Race 2

(1) LYONS AGAIN His last trip was an indication he is ready to put his best foot forward. (3) DATELINE HANOVER put in a nice rally for the place spot last time around; threat. (7) THE SPY should appreciate the move to the half-mile oval; watch out.

Race 3

(1) SER JON draws well tonight and the gelding was a fast closing third at Saratoga two starts back; the pick with Brennan at the controls. (5) GALLANT SEELSTER If you throw out his last trip, this 7-year-old visited the cameraman for pictures on 12/16 & 12/23 respectably; main danger. (8) MIGHTY PERUVIAN N has good tactical speed and fits well in here. Post hurts but is very capable.

Race 4

(5) THISGUYSAROCKSTAR Very sharp for the victory at the Big M last out. Gelding is good enough for the repeat. (3) N J LAW gets class relief and Brennan and that could help his cause; maybe. (2) WINTER BLAST is knocking at the door based on his last two tries.

Race 5

(2) WRANGLER MAGIC Canadian invader has fine speed and she gets a cozy post to work with; ready for action. (1) DELIGHTFUL DRAGON has put in two solid efforts in a row and appears to be a big threat against these. (4) CINAMONY came outside at the 3/4 pole to run them down for all the glory last out.

Race 6

(4) BETTOR N BETTER Pacing mare moves up in class off her last sharp try. Good to see Bartlett stays with this gal, so a move forward is well within the realm. (5) HIDDEN LAND Very consistent mare has always been right in the trifecta picture and must be considered in all the exotic slots. (6) TESSA SEELSTER broke at the 1/4 pole and she made a great recovery for the victory recently.

Race 7

(3) BAZOOKA TERROR was facing Open foes at Saratoga last time out and was sharp for place money. With a favorable trip, she can make tonight a winning one. (1) DEUCES FOR CHARITY took charge at the 1/2 mile marker and never looked back in her recent outing. (5) ICOMMANDMYSPIRIT Meadowlands shipper was late on the scene to rally for third missing glory by a neck; not out of this.

Race 8

(6) BETTOR ROCK ON N flashed good speed, sat in the pocket and came up the passing lane to get the job done recently at Philly. Two straight is not out of the question. (1) VALIDUS DEO comes back to Yonkers from Philly, gets post relief and Bartlett with the drive; big threat. (3) SAPPHIRE CITY Gelding finally leaves post eight and trainer Burke calls on Brennan; watch out.

Race 9

(2) MILKY WAY RAE was facing tougher of late and now she finds a good spot to get back into the winning groove. (1) OUR ELS DREAM N Sharp and consistent mare moves to door number one; big player. (3) FOR THE LADIES N came outside at the 3/4 pole to take charge on her way to glory last time out.

Race 10

(1) RANCOUSY comes by way of the Meadowlands and took the pocket route on his way to victory last out. Retains the rail and 6-year-old is very capable of repeating. (6) BETTOREVER is knocking at the door based on his last two outings. (4) BADIOU HANOVER should appreciate the drop in class; not out of this.
