I just got heartburn thinking how we used to figure this by hand. The first thing would be to sort this mess out, wow.....ScottyS

Tell me about it. What a mess, a fairly big race to boot, the feature at Monmouth today. Not to mention costly - double and in some case quadrouple winners.

How is this costly? Pari-mutuel system, they just split the pools according to pre-determined formulas. Since none of the horses paid minimums ($2.10), there was no negative pools to deal with. If it was a short field and you saw a bunch of $2.10 payouts then maybe the books or tracks would take a hit.

WB - talking about bookmakers, the kind that book horses out of their own pockets. Scotty knows what I mean.

I still don't get it, please explain it to me. Track payouts are cut in half to handle this, why should it be any worse for the books?

For generations credit bookmakers wrote horse wagers with limit payouts eg. 15-8-4 to 1 across the board. Exacta payouts 100 to 1 and anything else like superfecta or pick 3s etc usually 250 to 1. When you have multiple winners at each postition a book has to pay out quite a bit more than normal limits. For example the 4 to 1 max for show betting in this case ended up being more than 9 to 1. Place betting max of 8 to 1 ended up 12 to 1. The exacta pay off max of 100 to 1 ended up 113 to to one.
