Hornets sign Posey for 4 years

NEW ORLEANS (AP)—James Posey has won NBA championships with two teams. The New Orleans Hornets hope to be his third.
Posey, a 6-foot-8 forward who last season helped the Boston Celtics win their first title since 1986, agreed Wednesday to a four-year, $25 million contract with New Orleans, agent Mark Bartelstein said.
Posey also was part of the Miami Heat’s championship squad in 2005-06. His record of playing a prominent reserve role on title-winning squads made him a top free-agent target for the Hornets, who are coming off their best season in franchise history and looking to contend for a first championship of their own.

The Celtics hoped to keep Posey, a 31-year-old veteran who has a reputation as a strong defender and who was periodically assigned to guard LeBron James and Kobe Bryant during the postseason.

Not sure why Celtics did not spend the money and keep the guy. He was a perfect fit.

These days all FA are getting overpaid. Ronnie Turiaf got 4 years 17 million. Eton Thomas 40 mill... Even Luke Walton got like 30 million.

I think he will still be playing at a similar level at 35. He has less wear and tear on his legs from playing less minutes coming of the bench + all he does is shoot jumpers and play D.

4 years from now you think he's going to be playing at a similar level? i disagree. and im pretty sure history disagrees as well. after the age of 31 production decreases no matter who you are. and they paid more than the mid level. all those players you mentioned are under 28.

there's a reason a ton of teams were interested but no one would give him what the Hornets offered

31 is not considered old in the NBA. It is in football but not basketball..

Players in the NBA play into there mid 30's all the time. 31 is still considered prime age for NBA player. Players start to lose a step at 34/35 years old. Jordan won his last 3 championship from 32/33-35/36..

I can see Duncan is 32, Iverson is 33, Steve Nash is 34, Ray Allen 33, KG 32 etc. all playing at similar levels for another year or 2 and all of them have more important roles with more mileage in there legs.

I mean other might lose a step faster but you never know. Like I said just b/c of the way he plays I think he will be fine in the next few years.

Nobody wanted to pay him this kind of dough when he was 30, and his production wasn't any different last year -- just the result in June.

Comb through the books and try to find perimeter players who played well until 35 -- it's tough. Now try to find some who played well 'til that age after scoring single figures in their 20s. Good luck.


For better insight into Posey's future, let's take a look at what happened to some similar players -- those who rated as statistically similar based on their performance at the same age, played primarily on the wing and were in his league as a defender. The top names on that list are Bryon Russell, Dan Majerle, Jaren Jackson, Rick Fox and Raja Bell.

• Bell is only a year older and declined noticeably last season.
• Majerle declined sharply starting at 30 and had his last useful season at 32.
• Jackson had a quality season at 32 but played 25 games the rest of his career.
• Russell lost it at 31 and never got it back, though he managed to hang around for four more years.
• Fox played reasonably well until 33 and then lost it, hard, and was out of the league by 35.

I just named 5 (and could name many more) that disprove everything that guy wrote.

All I am trying to say is that I think he can still come of the bench in 4 years and shot 3's and play D.

In worst situations they should get 3 years out of him.

This is his last contract.

All these guys are almost 40 and play still now. At 35 most of the players listed above were still contributing and playing well. Regardless, all depends on the player. some will suck at 35 and some will still be going strong.

Posey was getting his last contract and wanted to make the most of it. Most wanted him for 3 years but he wanted and got 4.

I think its a solid pickup for the Hornets.

I guess Bonzi is gone now.

if it was a contract signed in there late 20 early 30's I am sure most of those guys were making that if not more.

+ I said those guys were playing at 35 not sitting around getting a check.

Dike Mut, Armstrong, GP etc. were balling at there mid 30's...

They are sitting around getting checks now and most of them are close to 40.

I also said early 30's as well. Thinking someone at 29,30,31 could easily sign a 5 year deal and play well at 35. It happens...

Jamison just got 4 year 50 million deal at 32. Not the smartest contract but they think he will play well for 3 more years then start to tail off.

Bottom line...Posey was overpaid, but he will help the Hornets...
