N. Iliinois +7.5
N. Illinois has surprised me to start the year. I expected this team to be atrocious, but the play for freshman Mike Dinunno led the Huskies to an upset win over Indiana St the other night. One of their suspected weaknesses entering the season may turn out to be their strength. N. Illinois 3 point shooting to start the season has been spectacular, led by Dinunno. This shoudn't come as a surprise either b/c he was a sniper in high school. I just don't think some expected that to equate into immediate production on the d1 level. To go along with Dinunno the Huskies has to other legitiment threats in mac freshman of the year Darion Anderson, who is averaging 17.7 ppg, and 6-11 center Sean Koswal 11.5 ppg. The duo of Dinunno and Anderson give the Huskies strong guard play, and the 6-11 Koswal give the Huskies a threat on the low post. Another expected deficiency, rebounding, is turning into another strength. No. Ill has out rebounded their first 3 opponents, and have dominated the offensive glass averaging 13 offensive boards a game. The ability to give yourself extra shots is one of the most important keys to winning, especially when you have deadly shooting that the Huskies have been getting.
As for Tennesee St they come in after 2 demoralizing losses, 1 to Loyola MD, and the other to a school named Cumberland U. Oh boy. It's been more the same for the Tigers. The inability to stop anyone on defense is killing them. Both teams shot a very high percentage from 3 point range, that will come back to bite them against the Huskies. Tenn St lost a lot of experience and depth from last years team. They have a few solid scorers, but the lack of defense will cost them against a team on the rise
