funny thing is, a month ago when there was speculation on the cubs getting mike lowell from florida, dusty baker was asked if he'd trade juan cruz for lowell. he replied, "no way. cruz is untouchable".

Obviouly they would have traded Cruz and more for Lowell. That was just tough talk. But, despite his struggles, Cruz is extremely talented and could be a very very good pitcher someday.

he could also be cutting down sugar cane in the dominican republic in 3 years.

Maybe. But guys with explosive 98mph fastballs and sharp sliders are usually given every possible chance to make it...until they get injured of course. Call me crazy, but I think Cruz could be an All-Star caliber pitcher in 3-5 years but not right away. He's got the "stuff" but of course so have a lot of guys who have failed.

Dusty never met an arm he didn't want to send to an orthopedic surgeon. Lotsa guys with "stuff" have come and gone. Jose Deleon, Ben McDonald amongst others come to mind.
