nhl is worse. fights every week. same in the AHL as well. NHL is the one sport where you have enforcers aka thugs and goons. otherwise these players would be working at mcdonalds. people dont like it either. one of the various reasons why the NHL continues to flounder.

Are you serious...that little jab at end :nohead:

I've played hockey all my life and that was nothing...you made it sound like he took two hands to an unconscious player :ohno: ...that was nothing more than a little nudge to let him know he's still there.

You want to talk thugs...try the NBA forum where half of the league are thugs from the ghetto :dancefool

Funny, on January 1, the Winter Classic had better viewership than any bowl game in the same time slot.

GTC08, explain to me how the Blackhawks outdraw the Bulls now?

FW no sense bringing facts to the table with this dip shit. Fighting is part of hockey. Fans love it. People like you don't understand hockey so you think you will sound cool if you make fun of it on a board. Congratumotherfuckinglations you're an idiot.

I have no doubt quinnsft34 enjoyed it when Bertuzzi broke Moore's neck. that isn't the point. The point is these thugs are continuing to give the league a bad image. and what does outdrawing the bulls have to do with anything. for what its worth, sports business journal today came out with tv numbers stating that in 12 of 15 nhl nba markets, nba viewership was higher. the 3 nhl markets: washington, minnesota, philadelphia.

your game will continue to be viewed as a joke until you get these thugs out of the sport and make it more pure. and by the way, the nhl all star festivities got a whopping .7 on versus.

god the nhl is so easy to bash. piece of shit sport, thug players, and it gets lower ratings than the danish cooking network.

Atlanta
NBA:
Hawks
NHL: Thrashers Attendance
Hawks: 16,398 (87.6%)
Thrashers:
14,361 (77.4%)
TV Ratings
Hawks: 1.4
Thrashers:
0.2

I would watch the Hawks over the Thrashers. Atlanta shouldn't have a hockey team.

Boston
NBA:
Celtics
NHL: Bruins
Attendance
Celtics: 18,624 (100%)
Bruins:
16,731 (89.8%)
TV Ratings
Celtics: 3.7
Bruins:
2.2
Hard going against the NBA champs. The Bruins have been mismanaged for a while. Really no excuse for not selling out, but the 2.2 rating for TV ratings is very strong.

Chicago
NBA:
Bulls
NHL: Blackhawks
Attendance
Bulls:
21,003 (96.7%)
Blackhawks: 22,495 (114.7%)
TV Ratings
Bulls: 2.3
Blackhawks:
1.1
I am a fan of both teams. The only reason to watch the Bulls is the hometown kid Derrick Rose. Chicago is one of the best US markets. These numbers will be far different at the end of the year. Have to remember the Hawks were never on tv for home games.

Dallas
NBA:
Mavericks
NHL: Stars
Attendance
Mavericks:
20,020 (104.3%)
Stars: 17,645 (95.2%)
TV Ratings
Mavericks: 1.2
Stars:
0.5
Attribute this to one person - Mark Cuban

Denver
NBA: Nuggets
NHL: Avalanche

Attendance
Nuggets: 16,820 (87.8%)
Avalanche:
15,797 (87.7%)
TV Ratings
Nuggets:
1.8
Avalanche: 1.7
Basically even. The Nuggets must win for the fans to come. Good hockey area.

Detroit
NBA:
Pistons
NHL: Red Wings
Attendance
Pistons: 22,076 (100%)
Red Wings:
19,724 (98.3%)
TV Ratings
Pistons: 3.9
Red Wings:
3.7
Detroit is a very interesting market. The Pistons play in the north suburbs in a big stadium, while the Red Wings play downtown in a smaller arena, on the Canadian border. Detroit is a great sports city, as both teams ratings will attest. The economy will dictate, hockey tickets are starting to become available. Five years ago, it was unheard of.

South Florida
NBA:
Heat
NHL: Panthers
Attendance
Heat: 17,754 (90.6%)
Panthers:
14,967 (77.8%)
TV Ratings
Heat: 2.2
Panthers:
0.2
Miami fans are the biggest frontrunners in the league. No way they will support the Panthers. The sooner the NHL reconizes this, the better.

Los Angeles
NBA:
Lakers and Clippers
NHL: Kings
Attendance
Lakers: 18,997 (99.7%)
Clippers: 15,443 (81.0%)
Kings:
15,965 (86.3%)
TV Ratings
Lakers:
4.2
Clippers: 0.6
Kings: 0.4
Hockey never took off in LA, while LA is a very strong hoops market. The bigger story here is the Kings AND the Ducks are both outdrawing the Clippers. I included Anaheim because they are in the same market as LA, only 30 miles apart - or the same as the Pistons and Red Wings stadiums.

Minnesota
NBA:
Timberwolves
NHL: Wild
Attendance
Timberwolves:
13,730 (70.9%)
Wild: 18,568 (102.8%)
TV Ratings
Timberwolves:
1.1
Wild: 2.2

Minnesota draws 20,000 for HS finals. All you need to know.

New Jersey
NBA:
Nets
NHL: Devils
Attendance
Nets: 15,152 (75.8%)
Devils: 15,313 (86.9%)

TV Ratings
Nets: 0.6
Devils:
0.4
Don't know enough about this market, outside of these teams are dwarfed by the Knicks and Rangers.

New York
NBA:
Knicks
NHL: Rangers
Attendance
Knicks: 19,132
(96.8%)
Rangers: 18,200 (100%)
TV Ratings
Knicks: 1.2
Rangers:
1.0
Big problem is how low the ratings are for both teams. Not sure why.

Philadelphia
NBA:
76ers
NHL: Flyers
Attendance
76ers:
14,536 (71.5%)
Flyers: 19,428 (99.6%)
TV Ratings
76ers:
1.5
Flyers: 2.2
These numbers surprise me. Philly is a great hockey area, but also a big hoops market.

Phoenix
NBA: Suns
NHL: Coyotes
Attendance
Suns: 18,422 (100%)
Coyotes:
14,801 (84.6%)
TV Ratings
Suns: 3.4
Coyotes:
0.5
Suns are a much better product.

Bay Area
NBA:
Warriors
NHL: Sharks
Attendance
Warriors: 18,855
(96,2%)
Sharks:
17,483 (99.9%)
TV Ratings
Warriors: 1.5
Sharks:
1.3
Surprised GS attendance is so strong. They are an established market too.

Washington
NBA:
Wizards
NHL: Capitals
Attendance
Wizards:
16,854 (83.5%)
Capitals: 17,973 (96.3%)
TV Ratings
Wizards:
1.1
Capitals: 1.2

Alex Ovechkin, all you need to know. NBA should be embarrassed in this market. DC is a great hoops market.

All attendance numbers are from ESPN. All ratings numbers are from Sports Business Journal via Sports Media Watch.

The NHL needs to pull the plug on the southern teams and move to far better markets like Portland, SLC, KC, Seattle, or some Canadian city.

Know what happened since the Bertuzzi cheap shot?

god the nhl is so easy to bash. piece of shit sport, thug players, and it gets lower ratings than the danish cooking network.

Yet your obsession with it is almost creepy.

It's the fastest team sport, where contact is part of the game. Tempers flare and violence can and does occur. Isolated incidents occur and are acted on. Fighting is an accepted part of the game - and enjoyed by most fans.

But it's just hockey, so I guess you have a point. I mean, didn't you see the guy step on the other guys head the other day? Oh damn, that was in college basketball. Remember when the players went into the crowd and brawled because some drunk fan stole the hat off the player? Oops, that was a cubs game. Yes sir, no thugs in the NFL...just don't show up for Bengals tryouts without your parole officer handy.

Is it me - or does GTC08 seem to spend his life 24/7 either viewing youtube, or reposting videos in this forum. Non stop music videos in the poitical forum (wtf) and spending time bashing a sport he claims to hate (when he's not talking about leaving the country)

American Idol gets better ratings than most NFL games, therefore it must be better than NFL right?

For someone who claims to be furthering his education, you make this entire forum just a bit dumber every time you post (seemingly for the sake of padding your post count)

Hockey rules are pretty simple. Too bad he can't keep up.

one of the various reasons why the NHL continues to flounder.

you know, what i respect about fair warning is he defends his sport but gives credit where its due to the superior sport, the nba.

and yes rnorris, i enjoy going after the NHL because they are the ones to blame for poor decision making. too many franchises, no marketing of players, not enough open ice, poor translation to television, horrible way of grading games, although i believe they somewhat fixed it instead of having 5 fucking categories. nobody even knew the all star game just happened.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but what are the ratings for the Raptors vs the Maple Leafs? I would say the Leafs 3/1 minimum. Also, Vancouver failed with the NBA (bad management as much as anything). How do you think the NBA ratings would be in these cities if they got a NBA team tomorrow - St Louis, Buffalo (HUGE hockey markets), and Pittsburgh?

On the flipside, Utah could definitely support the NHL. Indy, no; Milwaukee could also. Milwaukee will never get a team because the Blackhawks own the territorial rights.

One market that didn't get brought up was the Raligh/Charlotte area. Not sure how close they are, but both teams ratings probably suck, being in ACC country.

The grading of games is horrible. You play until there is a winner.

The game doesn't translate to TV is an excuse.

The All-Star game. Most hockey purists detest it. Only AS game I watch is the MLB, and Selig ruined it.

Horrible way of grading games?? WTF?

Are you really that concerned about the marketting of a professional sport?

How would you "translate" a sport originated in Northern climates to television and appeal to the majority who don't even know a single person that plays the sport.

The fact that a league can grow from 350 to aprox 4 billion in franchise value in 25 years is such an economic trainwreck! Maybe you fire up the Moron2000 and tell us how it can be fixed

Just like all your other bitching, do you have a solution? Please enlighten us as to how to make the game translate better for TV.

Let me guess, even though the majority are still showing a profit in this economic downturn, fold some franchises?

We're waiting Mr. Commish - please oh please fix the sport (and just in time for you to move away since that appears to have been your ongoing pledge)

this is how you fix hockey. get rid of 10 teams off the bat. move it to 2 conferences, 10 teams each. top 4 get in the playoffs for each conference. keep the strong markets. slowly expand to other potential markets only after sustained growth like a sioux falls, salt lake, etc.

widen the ice to olympic style. looks better on tv and players move more fluidly.

get rid of the complicated scoring system. its win loss or draw. 2 20 minute halves instead of 3 20 minute intermissions. 40 minutes. no overtime, no stupid shoot outs. you win lose or draw.

spend money marketing players. off the top of my head, iginla ovechkin, crosby would be the 3 i push.

get on a major network. regardless of the time slot, you need to be on espn, abc, nbc, major network on a weekly basis. versus is an embarrassment.

shorten the season to the winter months. nobody cares about hockey when its 95 out.

you make those changes then you have something.

Atlanta
NBA:
Hawks
NHL: Thrashers Attendance
Hawks: 16,398 (87.6%)
Thrashers:
14,361 (77.4%)
TV Ratings
Hawks: 1.4
Thrashers:
0.2

I would watch the Hawks over the Thrashers. Atlanta shouldn't have a hockey team.

Boston
NBA:
Celtics
NHL: Bruins
Attendance
Celtics: 18,624 (100%)
Bruins:
16,731 (89.8%)
TV Ratings
Celtics: 3.7
Bruins:
2.2
Hard going against the NBA champs. The Bruins have been mismanaged for a while. Really no excuse for not selling out, but the 2.2 rating for TV ratings is very strong.

Chicago
NBA:
Bulls
NHL: Blackhawks
Attendance
Bulls:
21,003 (96.7%)
Blackhawks: 22,495 (114.7%)
TV Ratings
Bulls: 2.3
Blackhawks:
1.1
I am a fan of both teams. The only reason to watch the Bulls is the hometown kid Derrick Rose. Chicago is one of the best US markets. These numbers will be far different at the end of the year. Have to remember the Hawks were never on tv for home games.

Dallas
NBA:
Mavericks
NHL: Stars
Attendance
Mavericks:
20,020 (104.3%)
Stars: 17,645 (95.2%)
TV Ratings
Mavericks: 1.2
Stars:
0.5
Attribute this to one person - Mark Cuban

Denver
NBA: Nuggets
NHL: Avalanche

Attendance
Nuggets: 16,820 (87.8%)
Avalanche:
15,797 (87.7%)
TV Ratings
Nuggets:
1.8
Avalanche: 1.7
Basically even. The Nuggets must win for the fans to come. Good hockey area.

Detroit
NBA:
Pistons
NHL: Red Wings
Attendance
Pistons: 22,076 (100%)
Red Wings:
19,724 (98.3%)
TV Ratings
Pistons: 3.9
Red Wings:
3.7
Detroit is a very interesting market. The Pistons play in the north suburbs in a big stadium, while the Red Wings play downtown in a smaller arena, on the Canadian border. Detroit is a great sports city, as both teams ratings will attest. The economy will dictate, hockey tickets are starting to become available. Five years ago, it was unheard of.

South Florida
NBA:
Heat
NHL: Panthers
Attendance
Heat: 17,754 (90.6%)
Panthers:
14,967 (77.8%)
TV Ratings
Heat: 2.2
Panthers:
0.2
Miami fans are the biggest frontrunners in the league. No way they will support the Panthers. The sooner the NHL reconizes this, the better.

Los Angeles
NBA:
Lakers and Clippers
NHL: Kings
Attendance
Lakers: 18,997 (99.7%)
Clippers: 15,443 (81.0%)
Kings:
15,965 (86.3%)
TV Ratings
Lakers:
4.2
Clippers: 0.6
Kings: 0.4
Hockey never took off in LA, while LA is a very strong hoops market. The bigger story here is the Kings AND the Ducks are both outdrawing the Clippers. I included Anaheim because they are in the same market as LA, only 30 miles apart - or the same as the Pistons and Red Wings stadiums.

Minnesota
NBA:
Timberwolves
NHL: Wild
Attendance
Timberwolves:
13,730 (70.9%)
Wild: 18,568 (102.8%)
TV Ratings
Timberwolves:
1.1
Wild: 2.2

Minnesota draws 20,000 for HS finals. All you need to know.

New Jersey
NBA:
Nets
NHL: Devils
Attendance
Nets: 15,152 (75.8%)
Devils: 15,313 (86.9%)

TV Ratings
Nets: 0.6
Devils:
0.4
Don't know enough about this market, outside of these teams are dwarfed by the Knicks and Rangers.

New York
NBA:
Knicks
NHL: Rangers
Attendance
Knicks: 19,132
(96.8%)
Rangers: 18,200 (100%)
TV Ratings
Knicks: 1.2
Rangers:
1.0
Big problem is how low the ratings are for both teams. Not sure why.

Philadelphia
NBA:
76ers
NHL: Flyers
Attendance
76ers:
14,536 (71.5%)
Flyers: 19,428 (99.6%)
TV Ratings
76ers:
1.5
Flyers: 2.2
These numbers surprise me. Philly is a great hockey area, but also a big hoops market.

Phoenix
NBA: Suns
NHL: Coyotes
Attendance
Suns: 18,422 (100%)
Coyotes:
14,801 (84.6%)
TV Ratings
Suns: 3.4
Coyotes:
0.5
Suns are a much better product.

Bay Area
NBA:
Warriors
NHL: Sharks
Attendance
Warriors: 18,855
(96,2%)
Sharks:
17,483 (99.9%)
TV Ratings
Warriors: 1.5
Sharks:
1.3
Surprised GS attendance is so strong. They are an established market too.

Washington
NBA:
Wizards
NHL: Capitals
Attendance
Wizards:
16,854 (83.5%)
Capitals: 17,973 (96.3%)
TV Ratings
Wizards:
1.1
Capitals: 1.2

Alex Ovechkin, all you need to know. NBA should be embarrassed in this market. DC is a great hoops market.

All attendance numbers are from ESPN. All ratings numbers are from Sports Business Journal via Sports Media Watch.

The NHL needs to pull the plug on the southern teams and move to far better markets like Portland, SLC, KC, Seattle, or some Canadian city.

so you pretty much just proved almost every area prefers basketball. the few that have better attendance in hockey are ones that have very good hockey teams and shitty basketball teams, so pretty much frontrunner fans. you think chicago gave a shit about going to see a hawks game three years ago? if jordon was still in a bulls uni you think the hawks would still be a hotter ticket? chicago fans are nothing but frontrunners, just like philly fans.

wash would have much better attendance in basketball if the wiz didn't suck and ovechkin wasn't on the caps. again only fans that will support the top teams and couldn't care less when the team sucks.

nhl ratings are a joke, no way you can argue otherwise. i actually think hockey might be the best sport on the planet, only after possibly football. i still would watch a nfl/ncaaf/mlb/nba/ncaab game over the nhl ANY DAY. thats coming from somebody that loves hockey. nhl just isn't a great product.

getting rid of avery wont help ratings at all either. he is someone they could have used to market.
