Sorry for such a long write up but lots to argue on this game. Will be back later with more...and hopefully far more abridged analysis.

Nashville -.5 (in regulation) -110

When you think of home ice advantage teams like Calgary, Minnesota, or Montreal comes to mind. However one of the most consistent winning squads playing at home since the lockout is the Nashville Predators.

Preds at home
Year------------W--L-OTL
2005-06--------32-8-1
2006-07--------28-8-5
2007-08--------23-14-4
2008-09---------4-1-0
TOTAL--------87-31-10

Furthermore their record in regulation for these four years:

Year--------W-L
2005-06----27-7
2006-07----24-3
2007-08----18-14
2008-09----4-1
TOTAL----73-25

During this period Nashville had 24 games that went to OT. If you include them the Preds record laying the half goal in regulation comes to 73-49. What’s positive expected value? Anytime you can find a 67% long term angle and need to lay only -110.

But going beyond the historical numbers I offer these current factors.

What was the strength of the Florida Panther coming into this season has become their weakness. The Panthers defense has taken a major blow to their top blue liners. Cory Murphy has a injured shoulder. Bryan Allen knee surgery. Bryan McCabe injured back. So desperate this team is they signed 35 year old Jassen Cullimore who has been keeping in shape by skating with his 4 year old daughter in Ontario. He skated in his first team practice since training camp yesterday.

When coach Pete DeBoar was asked about Cullimore’s status for today he said, “we have no choice,… Cully is playing whether he's ready or not.”

In the last four games Florida’s PK unit has allowed 6 goals in 23 chances.

Florida has opted to give backup Craig Anderson the start in net and not have Tomas Vokoun face his old teammates.

While the Panthers’ pre-season expectations on a solid defense has taken a hit through injuries, their lack of offense was to be expected. Florida owns one player that has scored more than 3 goals on this season and when your team points/goal leader is Cory Stillman you know you have some offensive issues. Not surprisingly the Panthers have scored 2 goals or less in 5 of their last 7 games.

Meanwhile Nashville’s offense is on a roll scoring 3 or more goals in their last 9 games and look to set a franchise record tonight with ten. 5 of their players are near or above point a game contributors. They have a balanced attack coming from three lines and offensive threats from the blue line in Shea Weber and Ryan Suter. The Preds have always scored but are doing it in a different way this year.

Goaltender Dan Ellis said the offensive output has more to do with a change in philosophy than a change in personnel. Players are getting pucks to the net instead of faking the shot and holding the puck. That is opening up the chance for rebounds. With more traffic around the net, pucks are getting whacked home.

"We have almost simplified it where before it was a little prettier, now it's a little uglier but it's going in," Ellis said. "

Keeping the puck out of their own net has been the problem for Nashville. Ellis has struggled but did show glimpses of promise in his last start. Washington outshot Nashville 19-4 in the first period but Ellis kept them in the game although they would end up losing in a shootout. After having a game off with a tweek in his back look for Nashville’s number one back in net. I wouldn’t expect him to be tested by the anemic Florida offense.

Atlanta/New Jersey OT +360 (half unit)

I haven't included a OT bet in my hockey night thread this year but I think this match up deserves it.

As I pointed out in the OT thread there are 4 teams that have consistantly played to the extra minutes over the last three years. Both Atlanta, (who leads all teams in this category), and New Jersey are included.

Last 2 for the Devils have gone to OT and 4 of their 9 this year.

Parlay:
Edmonton +1.5 -250
Dallas +1.5 -225
+102

In keeping with my unconventional HNIC thread today I'm going to go ahead with something I've been considering for awhile now.

As you probably know I'm bullish on these tight games being played in 2008 and trying to find ways to take advantage of them. Going to hook two of them up I'll attempt to get even money back.

I agree with Sherwood's post on the Edmonton/Carolina game and see real potential for a outright Oiler victory.

The Dallas/Boston game has some real scheduling quirks. It comes in as a potential flat spot for Boston. They come home after a 2-1 northwest Canadian trip and really have been traveling since training camp. While the Bruins have had moderate success under Julien on the road they have been nothing but a .500 team at home.

During Julien’s 93-game tenure, the B’s have gone 24-15-10 on the road and 22-17-5 at home.

“We’ve been on the road since training camp, basically,” Julien said. “Besides being hockey players, these are also human beings. And when you go home, and you haven’t been home much, there’s probably lot of things you have to get accomplished in a short time, a lot of distractions.

“On the road they have the luxury of getting their rest and just preparing for the games.”

Meanwhile Dallas has a quirky schedule as well. Last Wednesday they played at home. Last night in Chicago, Boston tonight…then a six day respite until they continue their 5 game road trip with visits to Anaheim next Friday, San Jose Saturday, and back to L.A. three days later.

After that humbling performance by the Stars in Chicago you can be sure they will put in a better effort tonight. The speed that Chicago exposed Dallas with last night will not be a problem against a team like Boston.

Fully agree, this game has OT written all over it, good luck.

Not a big supportor of the Islanaders for the last two years and I've been burned by them repeatedly when going against them, epecially when playing at home. Last year they played their hearts out for Nolan and won plenty of games early as big dogs. This year they are doing it with mirrors and I think they end up with the worst record in hockey.

I think the Canadians are the class in the east and I would have nothing to do with playing against them with the likes of the Islanders. I'm not sure why these respected cappers are on New York. By the same token I'm not ready to back an away team laying -200. I did consider taking Montreal -1.

Montreal TT Over 3 -130 (betvegasvic)

Yann Danis.

Habs have scored 3 or more goasl in 7 of thier last eight. Only Minnesota, by holding Montreal to 10 SOG in the last two periods, could keep them to only 2 goals.

Fuck sake Vic, your getting tough to follow. Where did the Edmonton play come from, :think2: Your spreadsheet come up late and no posts here. Then we get a Montreal -0.5 Play :think2: thrown in. I'm always pointing out the hazards of following posters but thought you were one of the more reliable ones, such is Life. :drink:

sorry wimbet. I saw a number at Matchbook on Edmonton I had to take minutes before the game. There was only $49 offered so it wasn't a HNIC play. That's the problem with posting plays here and playing at Matchbook. Usualy all the best bargains are got just minutes before game time.

The Habs at -.5 was a last minute choice as well.

I still might play the Kings but only if I can get +120.
