Hockey Night In Canada takes a back seat tonight. There’s but two games worth watching in this entire Saturday card. The top two teams in each conference face off and I think both are easy choices.
Washington -1.5 +241
Caps are finally healthy, (at least in their forward lines). The Bruins are not. B’s are minus Milan Lucic, Phil Kessel, Marco Sturm, Patrice Bergeron, Aaron Ward, and Andrew Ference. Boston’s missing pieces leaves them with gaping holes at wing and keeping pace with Washington’s extensive offensive depth will be difficult at best.
Washington gets very little respect and some are quick to point out they benefit from playing in the worst division of hockey. Many people look past the fact they have endured a abundance of injuries and probably lead the league in man games lost. Despite this misfortune they plugged holes with stop gap performers from Hershey who have shown how deep this organization is.
17 of Washington’s 28 wins this year have been by multi-goal margins. The Caps are 12-3-2 against teams that would be in the playoffs today. Nine of those twelve wins have covered the spread.
Detroit Red Wings -1.5 +315
Wings/Sharks….chapter 3. Both teams won at home in the first two meetings but San Jose had a edge in their’s. Wings were playing their 5th game in 7 days, (3 of those prior 6 games had gone to OT), 3rd in 4 after a game the night before in Anaheim. Detroit still was showing some measure of a cup hangover and San Jose was sky high to win that game for Coach McLellan.
"It was a huge win for us, not only are they the Stanley Cup champs but we stole their assistant coach," forward Ryan Clowe said. "It was a big night for him."
I heard a interview with Jeremy Roenick on XM the day before the game and he voiced the same sentiments. The entire roster wanted to give this game to McLellan and they took advantage of a tired team.
Next time around, the Red Wings showed all of us doubting Thomas’ that they are the still the class of the NHL in dismantling San Jose 6-0 at home, (one month ago). The score tells it all and no elaboration is necessary.
My thought is how can a team just dismiss such a lopsided defeat? Doesn’t the taste linger and create self-doubt ?
Red Wings opened their season winning but not in the same fashion of last year. Last season they disemboweled the opposition. Early this year they out pointed them and won by decision. Up until 12/15 Detroit went 20-6-4. Only six times in those 30 games did they win by more than one goal. Since then they have covered the goal and a half in 9 of 14 games.
Sharks lost their first game at home in regulation time last Thursday. Tonight they lose their first at home on the puck line.
