Hey guys,

While I'm sure most of you are very competitive with the contest coming up, thought maybe we could get a thread going on some capping tips, things to look for, trends etc that some of you have found successful in the past.

Also, any hints on power rankings and different things to look for?

Thanks in advance

Blown Head Gasket, here are some tips...

1. Find a time machine and move to Toronto circa 1985.
2. Read the Toronto Sun, Toronto Star and Globe & Mail sports sections every day for 18 years.
3. Watch every televised game and highlights of every other game for 18 years.
4. Develop an arrogant attitude towards all other hockey cities and countries, with the smug understanding that you live in the capital of the hockey universe (fans & media).
5. Visit your local Alcoholics Anonymous to address your serious drinking problem after having to endure listening to Howie Meeker, Dick Beddoes, Gary Green, Bob Cole, Nick Kypreos and worst of all, Pierre Maguire.
6. Bet on several years of playoff series hockey. You'll appreciate the subtleties of the game like never before, like a forward taking a hit at the blueline to get the puck out of the zone, especially in a close game in the third period or overtime.
7. Have played the game up to at least a Junior 'B' level... and no, US high school doesn't count. I don't care if it was some hot shot New England prep school and you caught farts for Roenick and Amonte.
8. Have a buddy or two make the show and/or a buddy as a player agent to expose you to the game in a new light.

And then you'll come up with beauty draft picks like Pearson, Thornton and Berehowsky in consecutive years. Ah the Loafs.

NEWPORT'S ASSESSMENT OF HOCKEY GAMBLING

I have watched this forum over the past two years and I have noticed a couple of things.

Hockey gamblers DO bet with their heart. And do not care. You will see a lot of homer picks....meaning the true REAl hockey fan betting with their desire.

Now the truth of this is it can have victory attached to it. But will catch up.

Totals are the best for straight bets in hockey.. I think most predictable.

What do I like to do with hockey....is bet dogs or reduced favorites.

I will define...Make sure you bet with a strong offshore agency that has a great many line combinations with puck lines. 1/2 (half) puck lines on dogs and favorites. half lines are great in parlays with hockey. Yes there are ties in hockey, but the odds you get with half puck dogs, and the reduction you get on a heavy chalk for a half puck or one and a half puck lines IS HIGH VALUE.at offshore agency's that pay "true odds".

I believe in cheap multi team parlays in hockey combining multitple options in 4-5-6-7 team parlays. You will be astounded when you see some of the payouts when you put hockey dogs, or hockey dogs that you have turned into favorites by betting them minus a half a puck. When you put these type of plays into parlays just for a mere 25$ or 50$ you can pile up money. Then play off your pile.

And WE ALL KKNOW NO MATTER WHO YOUR FAVORITE PUCK TEAM IS.......DOGS WIN....DOGS WIN....DOGS WIN......ALLLLLLLL THE TIME

AND YES THERE ARE SOME FAVORITES YOU RIDE....BUT NOT MANY....AND NEVER LONGer THAN 3 HIGH CHALKS IN A ROW

enjoy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,HOCKEY SEASON..........AYE

NEWPORT,

Thanks, good insight. Pretty much agree with all of it. Just wondering, what makes the total predictable? I must have missed that because I had trouble with those last year.

To add a point, I think it's a good strategy to bet against streaks, since a lot of people try to ride these. There's a lot of random shlt going on and most streaks are simply manifestations of chance and have no significance in themselves.

Daryl,

I think straight betting hockey is difficult, but I have found some strong over plays on totals to bet straight. Outide of that I am betting parlays the way I described above.

From your experience - what usually excels early in the season - defense or offense? I would think it would take longer for players to get in an offensive groove keeping the scores lower. Thoughts?

Neither actually. While some offensive players will be a half-step slower, so will the defenders. You get lots of sloppy games early on which can benefit both offense and defense. I absolutely hate early season betting in hockey more than anything because form is just so inconsistent and the turnover of teams is less important than it is in other sports. This point is crucial, while two players might have left and a couple guys signed to replace them and maybe a rookie or two gets to the big team, but that is still 4 guys out of 23 or so that are actively on the team. And unlike other sports, everyone on the bench plays and can contribute in the game except the backup goalie. So consistentcy on the roster is generally the rule, but quality of play and form is just so hard to predict first 3 weeks. If you play the early season, definitely play it very small compared to your unit size come November.

jam:

You forgot a few while in Toronto-

1.) Stop by the hockey hall of fame and touch The Cup.

2.) Visit Wayne Gretzky's restaurant.

3.) Grab a Cuban cigar after dinner.

I do, but in a bit different way than some do. I will cover that in my series on hockey betting. Everyone caps differently, but the big thing to remember is that you can't get discouraged by short-term results because way too much luck involved in hockey capping to worry about your results over a short span of games. Those that are armed with an appropriate mindset and BR are the winners.

Six weeks later, might as well add number 9.

9. Check out theRX hockey forum every day for Jam's picks and ride his wave, realizing why he was so cocky at the beginning of the year. Wonder why you even bother reading the threads of the knobs who post their picks as if they know squat about the game or have even played it. Then beg Jam to post his 'top plays', the only games he has actually bet this year and is 5-0 on.

Hi. The refs really determine what happens early on. Lat year they were trying to stop obstuction early and there were a ton of 5 on3 and the overs cleaned house most of Oct. when they gfot to all 5.5 and 6 it cooled off and then the refs stopped and the unders ruled for awhile.
this year no obstruction calls and the unders rulled oct pretty well.
Wild Bill I use yourtop ten bottom ten idea not only for hockey but also baskets and football. Its even better in baskets so far this year then hockey. thanks for the idea in your early article on hockey capping. regards bobk
