I want to stay outside of Boston and take the train into Boston because driving in Boston is not supposed to be much fun. I'm taking the old lady and my 12 yr old son. Give me some idea's on how to make it fun for all. Any tips on places to stay would be great. Thanks guys.

dad just got back...great restaurant for lobster and seafood is legal...sorry the other places he went probably arent "family type" places.lol

The subway or the "T" is definitely the way to go. I suggest staying close to downtown Boston, because there is a lot to do and see right there without traveling. Your kid would probably love the Childrens Museum if you think "real" museums would be a yawner. It's big with lots of interactive, hands on stuff to do. Things like, a scale that shows you how much you weigh on the moon, optical illusion gizmos, etc. I had to drag my kids away from this one display where you line up your faces in a "mirror" and see what 2 of you look like merged.. lol Anyway, there's tons of great restaurants, the aquarium, Fanual Hall (a dose of history plus tons of cool shops, not real expensive, lots of food stands too)
Downtown hotels might be spendy, but even if you stay outside "Boston proper" you are not far from the action with the T. I think you can see maps/routes at www.mbta.com (or org?) Good luck, hope you have a blast!

BTW, What Angelle says is good advice too. The harbor is cool, especially when there are tall ships in port, and day trips are lots of fun. I'm not sure when whale watching season is?

Let's be for real. Who can give you the skinny on Boston beter than BEANTOWNJIM himself? If you ask in an appropriate fashion, you might get a personal referal to Roger Berkowitz, JIM'S personal friend and major mojo at Legal's.

If you like corn-on-the-cob and Corona with extra lime, this is the place.

as for the game - get there early. DO NOT eat inside - the food sucks and is overpriced. they sell italian sausage outside (or used to - i haven't been to a game there in some time) with onions and peppers on it that is TO DIE FOR! also, buy a bag, or two, of hot fresh roasted peanuts and bring (sneak?) them in.

fenway is a dump - but the romance and charm of the place is great.
