Her native language was without a doubt French, could tell by how badly accented her English was. Trust me, it was a disdainful sigh, was clear as can be. I am used to it though, been in Montreal probably a dozen times and know the attitude. Was suprised to get it though because you're right, you don't expect it in a Tim Hortons.
Its funny how Francophone Montrealers play it both ways. They are happy for the endless stream of tourists, 95% of whom speak English, but then curse at anything English as if it is ruining their precious culture. People are coming to see that culture so obviously English isn't about to destroy it.
