It should all be called electronically, certainly balls and strikes....chip the ball and homeplate and use video like the broadcasters do , to show right where the ball was.

Absolutely. No need to have different umpires with different strike zones. Then you have pitchers trying to adjust and find the strike zone according to the umpire that's making the calls.

So what you chip the uniforms too? Players of different heights have different zones...

Not feasible.

That notwithstanding, it would be a huge change to this history-rich game; I wouldn't like it one bit myself.

Worst call in the history of baseball.
Fuckin gimp runs on the inside of 3rd base and trips over a guy laying down.

the first time he didn't make the throw, but he made an idiotic decision to not move off the plate to catch the ball

he can't throw out a runner and he can't even hit a foul tip

just a waste of space, 17 K's in 29 post season AB's.

It was far and away the wrong call. I remember, I think it was an Indians announcer, explaining the rule during one of my over/unders earlier this year that if the fielder is in the act of "fielding the ball," which he clearly was trying to do, then you can't make that call, since it doesn't apply. It was obviously accidental and he was in that position trying to field the throw from Salty... wrong call. We'll be hearing plenty about this for days, if not more.

The only way it could happen is to have an electronic signal to the umpire instantly in his ear. You'd still have to have an umpire back there at all times to call everything else instantly like foul tips/foul balls, catcher's interference, batter's interference, etc.

maybe it's a baseball rule they'll modify after that fiasco

right, wrong or indifferent, just a horrible way to end the game. What real baseball fan doesn't have a bad taste in their mouth?

so you think because an ump's horrible call that almost went the Card's way in game one was overturned by the crew, the Red Sox deserve to lose game three on a horrible rule

Not that it matters but I thought Middlebrooks purposely tried to trip him. Why are his legs in the air? Legs don't unintentionally go in the air.
