what he said.

Absolutely do NOT report him to the police. That's a good way to get killed. Don't be a rat. On the same note, how would you feel if a bookie left a message where you worked?? Fuck that, only a moron would suggest any response other than taking a deep breath and using your head.

On topic: Tell him you'll wait until football season. Just get him to tell you to your face that he intends to pay you eventually, within 6 months (now until January). If he's even a half-ass bookie, $1400 shouldn't be hard to pay off in week 7 of NFL. If he says, "I'm going out of business, no more booking," then just tell him that if you see him booking again, you will expect payment during football season.

Your worst enemy here is a scenario in which he owes a few people a TON of money, and you just a very little. Good luck.

take it easy....never said to report it, just threaten it....after about 3 months or so... he'll pay.....as far as getting killed....dude can't pay a $1400 debt but can afford to arrange a murder?:think2:

Ok, so I don't necessarily mean "literally" killed. But think about it, would you really call the cops or someone's work over $1400? Only a complete fuckface would, because it's simply not that much money.

Don't get me wrong, you sound like you're taking an intelligent approach to this, and I'm certainly not saying you agree with some of the space cadets that have posted in this thread.

on if it's an obvious stiff job

had a situation early this year where I was bootd from the book after winning a significant amount of money. local kept avoiding me and my calls for about 3 weeks...so i called the book and talked to the owner and said WTF? his exact words were "you're action is too sharp...but we paid xxx...he'll pay you, if not let me know and threaten to call the police"...never did and guy finally paid about a week later.

NO Book should Short Hand a Customer ! ( most of the time It's the other way around ) :lolBIG:

But this is what happens when you Deal with a Small Time Local !

I Don't think you Need to Give him the WHOLE NFL Season to get paid !
No Way ! No Shot !

Should be No More then 2 weeks into the Season, and if he can't Do that
Best way to Handle it ( If he is still Booking ) Just pass the word around that he is a Deadbeat !

Just MY 2 Cents... BOL !

I hate to be the guy that says woulda, coulda, shoulda, but from the beginning you should have been the one calling him and mentioning to him that this was NOT your action but rather some "friends" action (which would probably have been a lie), but that way when you got up big on him, you could lay the guilt trip on him. (since he was somewhat of a friend). But now you have this guy, a "friend" owing you money. This is a bad situation. He sounds like someone who has little to no problem stiffing you. If I were you, I would tell him that you owe a bunch of money to others (many others who are constantly calling you) and try to lay the guilt trip on him.

Am I the only person that thinks $1,400 is a fair amount of money?

NOBODY is going to get killed. If he can't pay 1400$ hes NOT connected in any way possible. Hell other bookies will be pissed at this guy for giving them (BOOKIES) a BAD NAME. If he can't pay a lousy 1400$ as a book then he needs to be ratted out to his customers at least so noone else gets burnt like here. Take payments but let all his other customers no what is going on.

ICEMAN,
Actually the right thing to do is if you know any connected or captains of the "FAMILY" that controls your area, check with them. They will talk to you if you know them well. IF not they'll scare the shit out of you, lol. BUT if this guy is booking and slow paying, the "BIG GUYS" need to know. Especially if they don't know about this guy and he isn't paying any "STREET TAX" to them for booking on their turf. Let him know you are going to the "BIG BOYS" and let them know one of their books are stiffing you. Either he'll pay you quickly, or you will get nothing and he will be in deep shit with them.

No one is going to get threatened or hurt. The guy is small time. He knows I was the betting thru the friend. We have worked together for 5 years or so.

I am just trying to avoid the whole phone call to him thing but it looks like this is going to be the route I am going to have to take. Like I said earlier I seen this coming so it is only my own fault.

I think what Betallsports may have summed it up best. If you tell others he is a deadbeat that will kill him big time. The thing I have going for me is he is going to try to stay in business as he is one of those types who LOVES the reputation of being a bookie and is almost willing to pay more than he wins just to be able to tell others that. Reputation means more to him than almost anything.

Words of wisdom to others. Even if it is a headache it is better to square up with local once a week or so. When you wait to the end of the season than you run into this problem. That should have been my first sign. You end up getting in line for your money.

Wow, that's some book - he can't come up with $1400 - some of my dinners are near $1400 - tell him to pay the fuck up - don't wash it on principal alone regardless if you need it or not - if you lost it you would have paid

dinners for how many?
1400?

Easy to blast the local, but all is not gravy on that side
of the tracks. Lots of figures have to be cut and then
you have the low life stiffs. And those jerks offs are
everywhere. They collect when they are up and either
stiff you of take 12 months to pay you a figure they
have already collected.
Now the reality is a book should never take a bet he can't
cover. But sometimes it happens (local and offshore).
Just be upfront, call the guy and work out a payment plan.
THEN NEVER BET WITH HIM AGAIN.
