The purpose of NATO wa to present a united front against the perceived continuing encroachment of Communism ... a silly and unnecessary aim, but the USSR is long dead now and NATO is just another dumbass diplomatic club to beat non-members over the head with. I think that the arrangement is idealistic at best, and as stupid an idea as the EU is, it's better-suited for replacing the role that NATO played in western Europe in the fist few decades of it's existence.
