Has anyone hitchhiked lately?

I hiked from Thurmond, WV to Mt Hope, figuring I could get a hitch ti Beckley.

The world is scared with all the bullshit going on. I talked to few people thag said they don’t trust anyone.

I had one guy stop and say he would get me on his way back to town. But I took a different route ti get off the main road and most likely missed him.

After 2 hours of trying an older lady took the risk and picked me up.

She was nervous as hell. She was on her way to her second job trying ti make ends meet.

I offered her money and she refused. It’s the one that don’t really have much are the most caring.

I threw the money in her seat before exiting.

Things are definitely different now. Most folks thumbing it lately look pretty shady. Couple of my friends are cops and honestly they refuse to pull over black People in violation of the law whether it’s an inspection expired registration or pretty much anything for the matter. Too afraid of what can happen. I once thumbed it from Montauk to Colorado late 80s
took me 2.5 days to get there. I can’t imagine making that trip now probably get robbed possibly killed. Technology has changed how we think how we work how we drive .You can’t even take a shit without it. People have very little patience for anything.

When I was 16, I hitchhiked across the state of Ohio, from one end to the other. But I wouldn't do it today. For one thing, I don't think anyone picks up hitchhikers anymore. For another, too many crazies. Now if I saw a pretty girl hitchhiking, I might stop.

I picked up a lady once and she was so crazy I'll never do it again.

Ironically, I've had a broken down car twice on the freeway and two people picked me up without me even hitching. Both were very kind.
