I was at Lisa's best friends wedding there in November.
Rule No.1 - Don't leave the resort unless you are on an organized tour. The 45 minute drive from the airport to the resort areas will tell you all you need to know.
We paid for the trip almost a year in advance and to be honest we couldn't spend money there. Everything on the resort is included and tipping is ridiculous. We would give out 500 pesos to anyone that carried our bag, filled our water, cleared our table etc and they treated us like kings.
The resort will have several swimming pools all with a complimentary bar but they are also located on the ocean so you can go to the beach if you prefer. They put on water aerobics, swimsuit competitions, stupid water games etc to keep you amused by the pool all day and then awesome dancing/singing cabaret style shows at night.
Each resort has a casino, personally I was in the bad books with the missus at the time so I steered clear but the lads said the odds were shit and the blackjack rules were all in favor of the house.
I was there the first week of November and the weather was awesome, not sure about April, but you are close enough to the equator to expect a lot of sun, so pack your factor 50.
Food not bad but be prepared to get the shits, oh yeah and it was all top shelf booze. Don't drink the tap water, not even when brushing your teeth, they will give you all the bottle water you desire. Most of the resorts have one really nice restuarant, find out which one it is and make a reservation as soon as possible.
The second you get there order a shot of mamajuana. It is a mixture of red wine, rum, honey and herbed sticks or some shit but trust me it will ....
a) get you drunk
b) give you a 12 hour boner
All in all I give it 8/10.
P.S 500 pesos is about $3 I think, so arm yourself with $100 worth of pesos at the airport and you'll be all set all week.
P.P.S Everyone looks like David Ortiz
