Harley-Davidson Inc. said it will cut about 1,100 jobs, or about 11% of its work force, over the next two years, as the motorcycle builder's fourth-quarter net income fell 58% following continued woes in its financial-services unit and slumping demand.
About 70% of the job cuts, which will include about 800 hourly production workers and 300 nonproduction, salaried positions, will take place this year.
The company has been cutting its work force and curtailing production in response to falling profits in the deteriorating economy as consumers cut back on their discretionary spending.
