Hard drive crapped out 6 months after 1 year warranty expired...

Product alert. Holding a 80gb Western Digital in my hand. Came in my custom built Gateway. Damn thing failed today with a manufactured date 02 Jul 03. Luckily on one of my backup pcs, during a super slow day. I prefer Maxtor or IBM. So I Costco a new Maxtor 250gb for a buck 40. What a fiasco trying to get Microsoft or Gateway to support me. Had hard stop code and all diagnosed. I will not buy a Gateway product again. Next time it is Dell for me. I know Pancho, you have 10 more computers than me, and none of them have ever failed. I will save you the time. What a bummer.

The only reason I go high end and not off the shelf is to customize my pc's for this business, and run 2 displays on each. I can't answer if E-machines was bought out, but makes sense as I have not seen them in Costco lately. Pretty lame to fail so fast. To be honest, I never use any of the hard drive, could get away with a 10.

I should not be complaining, I could have S.F. futures, win total...

Without getting too technical, it should be known that the larger hard drives, especially IDE drives (which 99% of you probably have in your PC) are somewhat more susceptible to failure than smaller drives.

Back your stuff up often, and make sure that the backups are readable.

IBM and their Rapid Restore feature would be good for you, not to mention Client Security Chip and software and access connections.



IBM is the only way to go. You do not have to pay more for one either although they are worth it.



Let's put it this way IBM is your Grandma's chocolate chip cooikies, Dell is Chip Ahoy. Both Chocolate chip cookies, but which one do you want?
