According to Americans for Tax Reform, it takes the average American worker 186 days to fully pay off the costs of government before one cent goes into the worker's own pockets.
Cost of Government Day falls on July 6. That means it will take until the end of this weekend to pay off all government spending and regulations. This marks the sixth year in a row that COGD fell in July. Before President Obama took office, it had never fallen past late June, according to ATR.
Currently, workers are "trading in" 121 days on the clock to simply pay off government spending. It takes another 65 days to pay for regulatory costs, totaling 186 days. As ATR points out, it is worse in states like New Jersey and Connecticut, where the COGD falls at the end of July.
So this 4th of July weekend, remember, the money that you have made so far this year belongs to the government. Enjoy that hotdog!
