I hate that he is gone. Chretien was one guy that didn't give Bush the time of day and usually told him to suck a$$.

Chretien rocks

Not nearly as much as bush has ruined the states in the past 3 years Pancho. At least Trudeau took two decades to do it

I personally liked Trudeau and Chretien.

I just think that for the past few years Chretien was not really making changes for the country. It seemed as if he was just going through the motions of going to different countries, shaking hands and going to parliament, not making any changes for Canada. Thus, things seemed to kind of get stale. Hopefully Martin can inject some life back into Canada.

I did like that Chretien listened to the majority of Canadians when it came to political issues.

Canadian politicians have been a giant Canadian "wrecking ball" !!!!! This Country is being raped by our "esteeemed leaders" and it is headed for trouble. We have been progressively taxed to death and the only thing carrying this place is the goddamn determined small businessmen and women who still manage to eek out a living despite the politicians attempts to drive them down. P.E.T. started the fiasco and it snowballedfrom there. I can tell you FACTS that have been suppressed for years and you would never believe it - corruption beyond your imagination.
Canada is a great Country but big changes are needed.
Remember one thing disposable income drives a nation as people are inherent spenders......taxation takes money out of the peoples hands. Between Marginal tax rates that are ridiculous, GST, PST etc etc, you are euchered.

One has to have a different perspective as a world leader as opposed to that which a bit player has the luxury of assuming.

& what exactly is this perspective?...to protect us against a country that is not a threat to us? to refuse to make an honest attempt to resolve a conflict that one had a large hand in creating in the first place? not sure I understand!! This is 2003 after all...

Finally a joke that explains what it's like to be Canadian...
Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God went missing for six days.
Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He
inquired of God, "Where have you been?" God sighed a deep sigh of
satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look
Michael, look what I've made."
Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?" "It's a planet,"
replied God, "and I've put LIFE on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's
going to be a place of great balance." "Balance?" inquired Michael, still
confused. God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth, "For example,
Northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while
Southern Europe is going to be poor; the Middle East over there will be a
hot spot. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there
is a continent of black people," God continued, pointing to different
countries. "This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be
very cold and covered in ice."
The Archangel, impressed by Gods work, then pointed to a large landmass in
the top corner and asked, "What's that one?" "Ah," said God. "That's
Canada, the most glorious place on Earth. There are beautiful mountains,
lakes, rivers, streams and an exquisite coastline. The people from Canada
are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they're going to be
found travelling the world. They'll be extremely sociable, hard working and
high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and
carriers of peace. I'm also going to give them super-human, undefeatable ice
hockey players who will be admired and feared by all who come across them."
Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed; "What about
balance, God? You said there will be BALANCE!" God replied wisely. "Wait
until you see the loud-mouth bastards I'm putting next to them...."
PAST THIS ON IF YOU ARE CANADIAN!!!!!!!

We've had our ups (hockey ha ha ha) and downs (National Energy Policy, 6&5, dumbass politicans etc) but I'm glad to living in this grand country. We have unbelievable nature, food and standard of living. No place I'd rather be.

Isn't Martin a "Frenchman" as well?

Paul Martin (use the English pronunciation) comes from a long established, wealthy, English family who live in the upper class Westmount section of Montreal. Like almost all Anglophone Montrealers he is fluently bilingual.

Paul Martin does not come from a long-established English family at all. He comes from a long-established Franco-Ontarian family. He was born in Windsor, I think, but attended high school at the french-language Ecole Secondaire Garneau in Ottawa. He's the perfect Canadian politician - appears English to the English and French to the French.

I made my comment more at the concept of "Frenchman" than anything. It is pretty sad that Canada has to pander to Quebec so much that almost every PM has to be from there or else they probably will start up another disastrous referendum. And personally I hate it when someone calls someone "Mexican" or "Chinese" when they were born in the US and lived in this country all their life. The US and Canada have always been lands of immigrants and people that were born here should be called "American" or "Canadian" and left at that.
