tommy fu is correct. the strategy was started by jackson when he was coach of the bulls and shaq played for the orlando magic. the strategy worked to perfection as "the three headed monster" (luc longley, bill wenington and some other scrub) fouled o'neal everytime he got in the low post.. .once orlando played "keep away" from shaq down the stretch, it made it easier to shut down the awesome peremiter shooting of Orlando in dennis scott, penny hardaway and nick anderson.
the strategy does not quite work the same with Shaq as a laker due to the physical and agressive and most versatile style of los angeles.
to beat the lakers: you must be physical, agressive and have a decent game of outside shooting. the lakers lay down when this happens.
