[ Change we can believe in right? ]

My name is George C. Joseph. I am the sole owner of Sunshine Dodge-Isuzu, a family owned and operated business in Melbourne, Florida. My family bought and paid for this automobile franchise 35 years ago in 1974. I am the second generation to manage this business. We currently employ 50+ people and before the economic slowdown we employed over 70 local people. We are active in the community and the local chamber of commerce. We deal with several dozen local vendors on a day to day basis and many more during a month. All depend on our business for part of their livelihood. We are financially strong with great respect in the market place and community. We have strong local presence and stability.
I work every day the store is open, nine to ten hours a day. I know most of our customers and all our employees. Sunshine Dodge is my life.
On Thursday, May 14, 2009 I was notified that my Dodge franchise, that we purchased, will be taken away from my family on June 9, 2009 without compensation and given to another dealer at no cost to them. My new vehicle inventory consists of 125 vehicles with a financed balance of 3 million dollars. This inventory becomes impossible to sell with no factory incentives beyond June 9, 2009. Without the Dodge franchise we can no longer sell a new Dodge as "new," nor will we be able to do any warranty service work. Additionally, my Dodge parts inventory, (approximately $300,000.) is virtually worthless without the ability to perform warranty service. There is no offer from Chrysler to buy back the vehicles or parts inventory.
Our facility was recently totally renovated at Chrysler's insistence, incurring a multi-million dollar debt in the form of a mortgage at Sun Trust Bank.
HOW IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CAN THIS HAPPEN?
THIS IS A PRIVATE BUSINESS NOT A GOVERNMENT ENTITY
This is beyond imagination! My business is being stolen from me through NO FAULT OF OUR OWN. We did NOTHING wrong.
This atrocity will most likely force my family into bankruptcy. This will also cause our 50+ employees to be unemployed. How will they provide for their families? This is a total economic disaster.
HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN IN A FREE MARKET ECONOMY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
I beseech your help, and look forward to your reply. Thank you.
Sincerely,
George C. Joseph
President & Owner
Sunshine Dodge-Isuzu

This sounds terrible, but my guess is that he didn't vote for, and/or support Obama, while his still open counterpart did.

He better hire a lawyer and sue.

Yet another fine business decision brought to you by The OBOZO administration, "Change we can be deceived in"
or more "Hoax and Chains". This is just the beginning of the bad stuff. Vote Democrat and reap what you vote for.

Dear Mr. Joseph, I sympathize with your plight - Businesses like yours are the backbone of America and normally pillars of a community such as yours. With this Congress and Administration I am afraid that the America you refer to, the Free Market Economy has been washed overboard in the name of (enter your thoughts here).

I live in CA - A most wonderful state that our legislature has seen fit to run into the ground with excessive spending, taxation and regulation. Businesses are fleeing this state for Nevada and they STILL want to impose more taxes, regulation and encumbrances.

I don't get it either Mr. Joseph. I've been a Dodge customer for 2 decades and will no longer buy either a Chevy or a Chrysler product. Ford or Honda for me. This is a new ballgame and over half the voting populace don't understand or get what is going on - a product of yet another Gov't program - Education. All we can do is vote - We vote here in CA tomorrow to raise our taxes or go bankrupt. I'm voting bankrupt becuase until they cut atleast 50% off the top out of local and state Gov't, nothing will change. The people need to rise up and take Gov't back and cut it down by 2/3rds.

I wish you the best of luck, but have no answer for you and am as shocked as you are by these turn of events in the last 100 days.

Two things are extremely unfortunate about this letter. First, the fact that Mr. Joseph and his family will be forced into bankruptcy and lose their ability to operate their business, feed their families and provide an opportunity for 50 other families is certainly a tragedy.
Second, the fact that Mr. Joseph is operating under the delusion that we are operating under a "free market economy". Mr. Joseph and his family and his business are among the first casualties of the Marxist state that Chairman Zero has brought to this country, but are by no means the last.
If you think this is fun, just wait until The Chairman takes control of the air conditioning switches in your house and car, confiscates your 401k and takes control of the health care decisions you used to make on your own or with your doctor. Still think we're free market?
Elections have consequences, folks. By the way, did you vote for his Obamaness, Mr. Joseph?

I am sorry for your misfortune Mr. Joseph. And I'm afraid we will see more such appropriations of private property in the future. Apparently this is President Obama's chosen method of "change." Remember that word that Obama campaigned on?

There is a very real chance that many more Americans are going to be jolted by Obama's change, particularly long term investors. As more folks learn that the Administration is picking winners and losers, long term traders and dollar cost averagers are going to get knocked out of the market by traders and gamers. Folks will lose confidence in the securities markets realizing they are in a "house game" with the odds against them.

If the DJIA breaks through its low of 6500, it could drop another 2000 points creating another panic. Maybe at that point enough Americans will realize the mistake they made voting for a dream rather than reality.

Every businessman in the country, large and small, are sitting in the dunk tank seat. Govt is pitching fast balls and instead of leaving them high and dry, they will be dunked and soaked. Don't these dealers have contracts with the auto makers? This must be another contractual agreement thrown under the bus.

There is indeed a George C. Joseph listed on the website as the Principal of the Sunshine Dodge-Isuzu dealership in Melb. Fl. The unfairness comes in from the Lord Obama's attempts at Fairness.....inevitably that means that he or his designee are picking winners and losers not the marketplace.......is that more fair? Of course not but it does help to get more Union votes! Oppose the growing dictatorial regime of Barack Obama!

Kool Aid tour, they are going to have the bad stuff landing on their doorstep. Too bad but you get what you wish for, I didn't vote for this. I hope all the people who voted for OBOZO are required to send a apology to Mr. Joseph. But we know the superior intellects that are so far above us plain folk never do that.

Mr. Joseph, our hearts go out to you, your family and your employees. I think Pres. Obama calls this "stimulus", but I call it thugery. How in the world can your dealership..which I am assuming was profitable..be a drag on the operations of Chrysler Corp? To not even buy back the vehicle inventory or parts is equally disturbing. It just happened to my Jeep dealer-a fine, upstanding operation that has been family run for years. 50 employees are out of work. The alternative is for consumers to go to the other Jeep dealer, who has a reputation of being a crook. So much for consumer choice, and earned loyalty.

The big story here is how this happened. If any of the readers who own businesses ( or even those working for others) think they are safe, think again. We are at war with our government. Their propensity to implement disastorous financial policies will sink this nation unless we stand up and fight. I will not buy another Chrysler product (and would never buy a GM, anyway). I was pissed at what happened to my dealer, but my protest will be on your behalf, sir...for whatever that means to you at this point. This auto "takeover" (and that is exactly what it is) was designed solely as payback to the United Auto Workers Union, plain and simple. We can all take a stand. Don't buy a GM or Chrysler product. Let the unions die. The cars already have.

Thank you for writing your gut-wrenching letter. May God bless you. It is truly a sad time for America.

Bankruptcy. Such a tough solution. Of course there are tradoffs. If he files, he will have car inventory that goes back to chrysler financial for the floorplan. That means chrysler eats the cars and they will re title them and sell them as new to another dealer. June 9 is hustling a termination. Dodge Rahm is a problem. When they sell the cars, it may take many months for Chrysler to release the title for registration. Communists work slowly.

For the grief, people should seek to buy these grey titled cars at 50 cents on the dollar.

Every non cancelled dealer will compete with these closeouts and over stocks.

Remember chrysler quit building cars and is a long way from starting up if they ever do re crank.

Mr. Joseph makes a big mistake at asking his question:
"HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN IN A FREE MARKET ECONOMY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?'
I believe that the US ceased to be a Market Driven Economy in October 2008, When TARP I was signed.
To my understanding, here in the US, Economy is explained as a result of land, labor, and capital as the three factors of production.
But there is a fourth factor as important as the other three: Enterprise.
No matter how good the intentions, Land, Labor and Capital are not able and cannot achieve any wealth on their own without Enterprise.
Without Enterprise and its will to succeed and acceptance of the risk of failure no wealth is created.
Enterprise is solely based on entrepreneurship. And is this entrepreneurship that is being widely damaged by the policies and politics baing put in place.
I would like to meet just one entrepreneur willing to risk, probably everything, in the present conditions leaving his future in the hands of the unknown without expecting "salvation" from the policy makers.

This is the opening salvo of the war on Small Business. They:

a. by nature are more difficult to control than Big Business, so are a larger burder to our new Central Planners.
b. provide a pathway to fincncial success for the entrepreneurial class, emablmg them to challenge authority.
c. provide a social structure for their employees that can offer an alternative perspective than the Party line.
d. are an emblem of success in this country that provides an alternative to government hand-outs.

Like famllies, churches, veteran organization, talk radio, tea parties patriotism, and the Republican party, Small Business are a threat to our government masters.

And they are even easier to wipe out than those other institutions.

Parting question: how many small business were there in the USSR?

This is just plain wrong. Everything the government meddles in screws the wrong people, the producers. The only way we can change this is to vote EVERY seated politician out. We cannot say “it is the other states politicians that are causing this mess, not mine” they all have to go.

Between the liberal dominated socialist central government and the out of control labor unions, the American auto insustry doesn't have a prayer. Comrade B. Hussein Obama's proposed automobile energy standards will drive the nails further into the coffin. The plight of car dealers, such as the gentleman mention in the article, is part of the collateral damage done by these leftist goons. America has a chance to start turning all of this around in the mid-term elections by removing the marxist's control of congress. God help us.

Aren't Car Dealer's employees by defaul members of a Union?
With the dealerships' closures, how many union members are going to loose their jobs?

boy now I am screwed......I agree with something that Zit posted

Seriously, when I heard these news and not being American I didnt quite understand WHY would they care how many dealers they had until I heard their explanation/excuse of "too many dealers>>>prices too low"

Well..........if they want THEIR prices to go up...thats all fine and dandy.........BUT won't they be at an even BIGGER disadvantage on competition with toyota/nissan/isuzu/mitsubishi etc???

Can someone explain to me WHY is this move suposed to work?

Whats kinda interesting here was that when the govt loaned Chrysler money, so they might have a chance to put something together with Fiat, all the rat wangers howled "no let em take bankruptcy" now that they are having to take bankruptcy the howling starts about that.

If you read the story that is not what people are howling about.

Go back and actually try to read and comprehend.

Did none know what happens when a company gos into bankruptcy protection.

It is not a pretty picture. I have a sneaking suspicion that all the conservatives on here were happy because the unions get screwed and the stockholders were deadmeat anyway.

Yes dealers and suppliers also get the shaft. At this point you are just trying to save something.

On a side rant:

Been shopping online for a 2008 particular model vehicle with low mileage... Found exactly what I was looking for at a GM Dealership in Central Fla, which is 200 miles north of where I reside.. Had a relative that used to be an internet sales manager at a local dealership do some research on the vehicle in question... Research revealed that the dealer had the car marked up roughly $3,000 from what it was bought at auction for (give or take $200-300).. Upon talking with the dealer, he did not even dispute this fact..

I then requested an "out the door" total cost of the car after telling the dealer my firm price, which was $2,000 less than their listed price... Rather than coming down from their listed price, their written offer was for the full listed price and even included a 600. dealer fee (pure markup profit) which most dealers eliminated over the past year...

After declining their offer via email and suggesting they come down in their price, I get no reply until 2 days later asking if I'm gonna drive up there to check out the car...

What a bunch of arrogant Pr**ks... They knew I wanted that particular model with extras and refused to negotiate a fair price. Told me to call them back in 30 days if it's still there and maybe they will lower it... My relative that used to be in the business could not believe their arrogance and told me most dealers would initiate a negotiation process....It wouldn't surprise me if that dealer is on the chopping block when GM announces its dealers that will close...

are you implying that they want to give him the shaft with the parts/cars he already has just to save some $??

I don't get it, what good does this do to the bankrupcy process when the guy is not getting anything from Chrysler and instead he is selling their products?

If I have a computer store........why would HP care that I remain as a dealer or not? they get no $ from shutting me down and in turn I sell their productS!

Quite frankly if I was this guy I would probably

a) Start selling Isuzu's with a VENGANCE.........hopefully trying to convince everyone driving any type of car that even smells like a dodge/etc to switch by offering the best deal possible

b) not sure if this is allowed under the rules of selling their shit....but I imagine I can find ways to offload the parts anywhere else.......other dealers? or simply sellers of spare parts.

After a while it becomes perfectly clear why people use bombs etc when they are screwed like this ...

I dont know what all the factors are and I'm not sure why both Chrysler and GM want to reduce the number of dealers.

My post that you addressed was intended more to tiz and the labor question.
