No ass man. YOU CANNOT ADVANCE A LATERAL whether it be frwards or backwards. It was backwards even though the da ref said forward, still, you cannot advance it after that. Only fumbles. Its in the rulebook and was explained.

Yes you can advance a lateral. Here is the rule:

Section 4 Backward Pass and Fumble
Article 1
A runner may pass backward at any time (3-21-4).
(a) An offensive player may catch a backward pass or recover it after the pass touches
the ground and advance.
(b) A defensive player may catch a backward pass or recover it after the pass touches
the ground and advance.

Note: A direct snap from center is treated as a backward pass. A muffed hand-to-hand
snap from center is treated as a fumble by the quarterback.

Really? Do you have a source for that. Not trying to get into an argument, but just want clarification. This is from the NFL rules that I found:

Backward Pass

  1. Any pass not forward is regarded as a backward pass. A pass parallel to the line is a backward pass. A runner may pass backward at any time.
  2. A backward pass that strikes the ground can be recovered and advanced by either team.
  3. A backward pass caught in the air can be advanced by either team.
  4. A backward pass in flight may not be batted forward by an offensive player.

from former NFL ref Jerry Markbreit

Under NFL rules, there is no lateral pass. A pass is either forward or backward, and, if a ball is thrown laterally, it is considered a backward pass, and anyone on either team has the right to recover and advance.

You can advance laterals/backward passes in either direction. Live ball, whether it's caught or not.
My guess is that they're calling the earlier lateral the foward one, which can't be advanced.

I think they need to be more clear on this rule:

A backward pass in flight may not be batted forward by an offensive player.

So a defensive player can bat it fwd? But then what? And what happens if an offensive player bats it fwd--is it no longer a backward lateral then because an offensive player can't "bat it forward"?

c-Lo, do you know the source of the other rulebook you read? I'm just curious to see it. (I know they change rules all the time from year-to-year.)

Anyone watching that play knows that not one of the passes went forward. You can reply it over and over and you'll never see that ball go forward. They were backwards which makes it a legal play. I didn't bet a dime on that game, but something smells rotten in Denmark to me.

I'm sure we'll see something about it on NFL NETWORK when they bring in the refs for that section they do every week.

Hmmmm.......Rich Eisen just did the recap on NFL Network. Called it a foward pass, WITHOUT explaining it at all, even when questioned by the other guy in the studio. That little lackey and league suckup is useless.
