<!--flv has invalid value--><!--MME--> </td> <td> </td></tr></tbody></table>Belmonte, an Australian with the unique two-handed style, has been the poster boy for the PBA in its desperate attempt to attract mainstream media. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Denver Post and Boston Globe. He has made guest appearance on "Good Morning America" and the "Today Show."
The only problem is he hadn't accomplished anything. The PBA was promoting his appearances in Tour qualifying rounds, to the chagrin of exempt players.
Belmonte lived up to the hype in West Babylon, beating Michael Fagan 215-201 in the title match.
"With all the media attention I have received, it's now time for us to put the foot down on the gas and go mainstream," Belmonte told reporters afterward. "This is not just about me. There are many great stories and great athletes out here. It's time all of us knock on all of the doors we can; the next one could be the 'golden key' door we are all looking for."
ESPN's Rob Stone and Randy Pedersen had a rare philosophical discussion during Sunday's telecast.
"We talked about all the media attention he's received this season," Stone said, "and I said, 'Are there guys out there that are jealous of this attention?' He said, 'I think so. It's hard to see it because they won't say it to your face. I think there's some people out there who think I'm 'the pet of the PBA.' But they're a little bit confused. Yes, he's been given some leeway, (and) that attention is on him, but it's really good for all of those involved with the PBA."
Pedersen: "The bottom line is, any and all press that we can get for this sport, it's all for the best. It benefits all of the players. If that means bringing in international flavor, or a guy like Jason Belmonte, to get us in the Wall Street Journal, to get us on 'Good Morning America,' it benefits all of the players out here."
Stone: "Now the pressure's on him to back it up."
Belmonte did that Sunday.
