Oh no, Not another gun thread but I pose serious questions, How many people have used a gun for self protection? Would that gun be on the banned list? What kind of gun do you feel is needed for self protection? Just to let people know I do have a gun for self protection, I have had people prawling around late at night and having a gun does give confidence, I live in a remote area where if I was getting robbed it may take 10 - 20 minutes to receive. Oh I should mention I use a pump 12 gauge as I feel it gives me less chance of missing in a hectic situation.

Ruger LC9 (9mm) stays in my truck console unless I am at the range. Gun is very small and compact. I feel if there was ever a chance for something bad to go down it would be while I am away from my home.

As for the home.....keep all my guns in a safe because I have 2 small children. I do have 1 12g under my bed with the shells hidden (self defense shells) hidden at another location. Our alarm on our house has 2 local sirens as well has being monitored. I would hear something going down before the perpetrators would know what hits them. I also live in a very nice neighborhood that has video surveillance on the light poles. Our HOA had them installed 5 years ago when we had a crackhead sneaking around the gate and stealing UPS or FedEx packages. Even tho my subdivision is gated, you can still get in by foot in certain areas if you really wanted in. Long story short....there were a man and his wife that was sneaking in an stealing mail, packages, etc....cameras caught them and we're arrested by the first week after install.

I don't live in that remote area but I assume it would take police 10 minutes to respond to any sort of call (we have an alarm system).
You have to remember, you have no idea what sort of response you're going to get from the police.

I have a Mossberg 500 12 Gauge that I keep for home defense. It is in a room that I use for the home office. I also sleep with a loaded .45 hidden in the bedroom.
I carry a Sig P220 compact .45 and also keep an easily concealed very sharp knife in the car as well.

If someone were to break in, they would be in a world of poop. I have a weapon in just about every room of my home.

S & W snub nose 38 5 shot revolver. Keep it loaded in the end table next to the couch in the family room.

No alarm system per say but there is a 129 pound German Sheppard who roams the house and can hear a pin drop a mile away. When she barks she gets your attention.

Yeah I do not need an alarm system, I have good watch dogs. They know if someone is in the yard immediately.

Do you fantasize of someone breaking into your house and you being the hero and mowing them down? I was just wondering why people are so heavily armed? I mean do you constantly fear for your safety? Did you have a bad experience in the past? I have a cousin who was a officer who wears three guns on himself at all times, even fishing on his lake in a boat, Hip, back, and ankle.. The guy is eccentric as hell, I think it is odd, different, and a little whacko. At the same time if I were in a public area and a shooting started, I would want him to by my side.

He got in big trouble from my Mother cause he is 18 years older than me and had me shooting some kind of pistol at a range when I was very young. Looking back at it, that was odd.

I have been handling firearms for over 30 years. I have never once brandished, threatened, or pointed a gun at anyone.
I hope to goodness I never have to pull a firearm on anyone (if I pull I will fire).

So no.

When I read stories such as this (good neighborhood!)

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/07/nyregion/07slay.html?_r=0

I remember to be prepared. The fact of the matter is the criminals while often stupid, are also unpredictable.

I have no idea if someone would ever try and kick in the door or dive through the window. But it does me no good to be out of reach of a weapon if such a crazy thing happens.

True and fair enough. I think geographical areas are major influences as well, if I lived inner city, I think I would have more than just a shotgun for protection or if I didn't own watch dogs.

When my daughter hired on at LVMPD she spent a day with 3 officers. Drove a police car, had firearm instruction etc.

At the end there was classroom time where they where told how they were hired because they were the best of the best (motivational type stuff).

At one point an officer was saying that they are taught to fire 3 rounds, 2 to the chest followed by 1 to the head. He then said to the class, “I want all of you to close your eyes.” He then preceded to pump a 12 gauge. He then said “did everyone hear that?.” “If you ever hear that sound again, run like hell.”

No doubt a shotgun will get the job done. I’d be afraid of shooting the dog if she was engaged with an intruder using a shotgun. I guess I’d have to find another way to subdue the guy.
