Canadian Serial Killings Case Still in Shadows

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The more Canadian police dig underneath a pig farm east of Vancouver, British Columbia (search), the more death they unearth.

Over the past two years, police have discovered the partial remains of 31 women, making it the country's worst serial killer case.

"This is supposedly the good and peaceable kingdom ... Canada," said criminologist/sociologist Bob Ratner. "It's getting increasingly difficult to think of Canada as some kind of sanctuary from those crimes."

Farm owner Robert Willy Pickton (search) faces 22 counts of murder so far. His alleged victims are all prostitutes from downtown Vancouver's east side.

The details of the murders are unbelievably gruesome. Police found human body parts in freezers used to store unsold meat. They also discovered remains in a wood chipper (search) — the victims' bodies turned into pig feed. But most Canadians don't know any of this horrifying evidence because the country's media has been barred from reporting it.

"Canadians are trying to protect the integrity of the criminal justice system, protect people's reputation against encroachment, against jury taint," said Mary Lynn Young, an assistant journalism professor at the University of British Columbia (search).

But experts warn that Canada's coverage ban has a dangerous flip side — shielding the public from the details of the case also protects the police from critical scrutiny and has the public wondering why it took so long for the women to be found.

p.s. you'll note there's not one reference to panam in here, except for this footnote.

I am surprised that Canada is supressing this. After the documentary "The Corporation" was allowed in Canada and banned in the United States, I would have thought that Canada didn't keep stuff like that from their people.

Thanks for the post.

I'm considering Greenland in 2035 (when they're scheduled to have running water and broadband)

the canadian criminal justice system prohibits publication of alot of information prior to trial if there is going to be either a preliminary hearing and/or a jury trial. the info all comes out in the end when the ban is lifted, they just have some silly notion of protecting the rights of the accused to have a fair trial, not contaminating the jury pool, blah, blah, blah.

Alki - I highly doubt if Jazz is the same guy that used to own Pelican sportsbook. He may be however, the Pelican who used to own Jazz Sportsbook. (joke)

I highly doubt this documentary was "banned" in the US. A station or studio might have chosen not to show it, but unlike other countries, the US GOVERNMENT generally doesn't ban films from being shown on video, cable, or screen (the exception would be child porn and other extreme forms of porn, which I doubt is the subject matter here). Compare that to the UK and many Asian countries which often ban films from being show at all.

lol - nope, I have absolutely no connection in the past or now (or the future, to be comprehensive in my denial) to anything even remotely gambling-related, except of course that I place wagers. Lander, after Greenland then what? I hear there's a shack in Montana going dirt-cheap, only one prior owner not likely to reclaim his property

maybe because prostitution isn't wanted there, so they could care less if some of them get killed...sorta like here, where police for some reason care about gang members getting killed. I think as long as it's gangs killing each other and nobody else, we shouldn't devote any time to investigating it.

unless prostitution is legal there...

actually it is legal...

solicitation for the purposes of prostitution is illegal...meaning streetwalking etc is illegal...advertising for sex is illegal....however advertising for company is legal & whatever two adults decide behind closed doors is no one elses business...that is why there are 30 pages of escorts in the yellow pages...

well in your country once they meet for dinner or start talking a while on the phone they are not allowed to talk about having sex for dollars...in my country once they meet or start conversing it is legal for them to start talking about sex for dollars, if they want too.

pancho from TO eh? Ottawa myslef...

congrats on the leafs the other day...I dont care if we had a flu or anything like that the Sens should be ashamed of themselves for that loss. I think it is time to hit the panic Button in Ottawa regarding goaltending...

It is also time to give PRUSEK the # 1 position...undeniably...should be stated in the media & such

we need to get a freindly competion (between goaltenders) going on here but Demers has no BALLS...

In regards to your question the answer is neither...however I have my MASTERS in legal studies from Last Chance U here in Ottawa (Carleton U).
