We once had a all time record of 33,000 attend a dog race in Portland Oregon. The last time I attended a dog race at Multnomah Kennel Club just outside of Portland, Oregon, you could have thrown a bowling ball down the busiest part of the betting windows and not hit a person. It was so sad to see after all those years of trying to find a parking spot on Friday and Saturday evenings. Yes Multnomah Kennel Club is now a shopping Mall and it was rated one of the 3 best greyhound tracks in the USA. St. Pete and Hollywood in Florida were always close to the top also. If you had a top notch dog at any of these 3 tracks... You had a winner !Isn't greyhound racing about dead? It doesn't seem like any of these places can stay in business without slots and\or casinos anymore.
I owned and raced a fantastic greyhoung called TK Macho Mutt that won 118 races in his career. The last time I checked Macho was ranked number 11 in total wins in the history of Greyhound racing. He once won 18 straight races and won several 2 dog match races with Champion dogs from other tracks. The T was for my partner Tom and of course the K stood for my name. Those were the good old days in Dog racing. Yes, it is now a dying sport and I hate to see it end. By the Way, the dogs in my kennel were treated with love and had a great life doing what they loved to do best.... race and run ! Anyone from Florida or Oregon know Roy Grober... He was my trainer and Mike Moody raced my dogs in New England.
It's strange because if memory serves me correct we had a similar bill about 10-15 years ago and it got shot down. But the ad money that was spent showing a few dogs being poorly treated I guess got in voters heads this time out.I don't know if the greyhound people have any recourse in this decision. I love animals, but some of these animal rights people are wacko.
I think that some of this is a continuation of the Michael Vick saga. There are bad people in almost every industry and of course there were some bad apples in the dog racing industry also. However the wachos as you call them should be going after the bad apples that mistreat their animals and not going after the whole industry like has happened in this incidence. If a teacher is found to be molesting his students, you don't go after the teachers as a group, you go after the offending bad apple.Wow kermit, I remember Macho Mutt very well. Great dog.
I have been a HUGE greyhound racing fan for over 35 years I went to Sodrac Park when you had to stand in line forever to make a bet. What a great old track it was.
I have played Raynham in Mass. for many years. What a crock of shit this is. The economy in and around Raynham and Wonderland will be hurt big time.
A friend of mine was a trainer at Sodrac and he would bring me back into the kennels. These dogs were very happy and well cared for.
