Dan Patch broke world speed records at least 14 times in the early 1900s, finally setting the world's record for the fastest mile by a harness horse (1:55 seconds) during a time trial in 1906, a record that stood unmatched for 32 years.

Dan Patch lost only two heats in his whole career, and never lost a race. His speed was such that other owners sometimes refused to race their horses against him, leaving him to run against the clock.

* Heats are when a Horse is racing in some of the Bigger races, so if there are too many horses entered in that race, they Break them up into Heats.

Just for people that might not understand what is Stated above.

Dr. Fager for 1 1/8 mile or under was the greatest by far, after that some might catch him. Damascus did!

1. Dr. Fagar
2. Secretariat
3. Ruffian
4. Northern Dancer
5. Whirlaway
6. Affirmed
7. Seattle Slew

As for Studs: Native Dancer, Bold Ruler & Ribot come to mind

Totally subjective and nearly impossible to say with any certainty.

My personal list of the greatest race horses ever:

Greatest Colt: Man O' War
His lifetime record included 21 starts with 20 wins and a one place finish. He retired as the leading money winner in North America at the time. He set 8 records, 3 world records, 2 North American records, and 3 track records all by more than just a fraction.
Man O' War also carried as much as 138 pounds, conceding as much as 30 pounds to his rivals and still beat them by large margins. Another factor was the level of vetenary medicine during his day and the modern state of the art medicine available to contemporary horses.

Greatest Filly/Mare: Tie - Personal Ensign or Ruffian.

Greatest rivalry: Seabiscuit and War Admiral.

Honorable Mention: Northern Dancer and Secretariet, Seattle Slew. There are so many others who could easliy make this list.

wil..

Im not old enough to have seen most of the best horses im sure, ive heard and seen small clippings of Secratariet and it was impressive, im sure the times are way up there as well but from what I saw he was running in 5 horse fields. SO from what ive actually seen Ill take the two time breeders cup classic champ Tiznow

For harness horses its more of the same, just havent seen enough of the older ones, Ill go with Bunny Lake.
