[h=2]Why Do Liberals Hate Fox News So Much?[/h]Posted on 03/02/2013 by nuclearcannoli
This is a subject that fascinates me, the extreme liberal attacks on Fox News. I find it funny. The news media in American is the only form of reality TV I find entertaining. However, it is the visceral, vicious, and vitally pure hatred liberals have for Fox News that I find most amusing of all. Amuse me as it does, I’ve never totally understood it though. Here I want to present a few reasons why I think they have this reaction.
First let me say I think all news is biased, and expecting unbiased news is stupid. Unbiased news would be a ticker of words describing all news stories as they came in with no prioritization and no subjective adjectives. It would be boring as hell and not tell you anything you wanted to know, or needed to know. All news is biased, and people seek out the bias they’re more comfortable with. Just as we choose our friends and careers from those options we find to be attractive to at least tolerable, we choose our news outlets. Fox News has a neoconservative bias, no doubt, and conservatives of all stripes are attracted to it for this reason. It’s more agreeable to them than other news networks. Liberals go to MSNBC and other such networks for the same reasons. However, it’s interesting to see how conservatives and liberals each react to the chosen news source of the other. Now, my reasons for liberals hating Fox News so…
First, Fox News broke the monopoly. Like it or not, all news has a statists of big government bias, and up until Fox News came on the scene all the national networks had a liberal or left wing bias. Fox News came on the scene and made a point of having a conservative and a liberal point of view where possible. Of course the political spectrum is more than that, and of course Fox itself was slanted to the conservative side of things. However their success in this approach was only possible because liberals had dominated the medium for so damn long. Someone finally realized there was an underserved market out there and decided to tap it. Claims by liberals that would have went unchallenged on other other main stream networks were finally challenged, their bias was finally exposed. Not by providing an unbiased alternative, but by providing an alternative biased in the opposite direction.
Second, Fox News shattered the precious liberal echo chamber. Liberals, who were so used to never having their views challenged for literally decades, were put in a position where they had to defend their beliefs, and some of them weren’t that good at it, and some of their beliefs were indefensible. In this sense, liberals were the media bully for a long time and finally got a black eye of their own. Fox News presented the opposite of Bill Maher’s old and current show. His formula was to invite three liberals on and one conservative and then they all bash the conservative. Whether they’re doing so with facts or bullshit is never the issue, without a supporting voice, the conservative isn’t going to make any headway. Fox did the opposite, and liberals hated being on the receiving end. In a previous post I’ve noted the difference between the liberal and conservative echo chambers. Fox News changes that relationship on the national media level. Now it was just as easy for a conservative to find people to support them in their views, and they became less afraid to challenge liberals. And liberals, used to the self assured confidence that comes from never having to actually justify the bullshit you believe, had their world shattered.
Third and final, Fox News put hot women on the air. When I was in college it was always assumed the hot chicks were the liberals. They dressed cuter, looked cuter, and the culture of the university damn near drove it into your head that ‘conservative’ women were old hags who couldn’t have any more kids and who were increasingly obsessed with stopping abortion and pre marital sex. Fox News put women on the air who were good looking and who challenged this view in many cases. Say what you want about their personalities or lack there of, and there would sure as hell be a lot to say on that front, but the women of Fox News are no different in their collective vacuity than any other group of talking heads, male or female, from any other network. But they’re almost all better looking. By losing their stranglehold on being the source of female hotness, liberals lost a part of the male audience, which was likely leaning more conservative than the mean anyway but just didn’t have any other alternative for a long time. Putting personality and political views aside, on a purely visual basis Laura Ingraham, Anne Coulter, Julie Banderas, Andrea Tantaros, Juliet Huddy, etc., they’re all primo pieces of ass. One or two are getting a bit long in the tooth, no doubt. But on the eye candy side they’re all winners. Whether you could tolerate them in a long term personal relationship is beside the point, because you can turn the TV off, and their personalities don’t matter when you’re only dreaming of them speaking in monosyllables. In the end, it likely appealed to many men, I know it did to me, that we could find women who were not raging liberal feminazi types, and who wouldn’t spend every moment in a relationship searching for reasons to be offended like hens pecking for seeds in the barn yard.
In the end, I think liberals need to get the fuck over it. Fox News is no more or less biased than the shit you watch, and no more or less reliable, and no more or less right in their analysis programs. A significant portion of the US public disagrees with you, and does not think New York and California should dictate to the rest of the country how they live their lives and do business. I remember seeing liberals start to hit the roof about this stuff when talk radio came around. I didn’t even know about it until liberals started bitching about it, and I scanned the dials at the time wondering where I could find all this horrible conservative talk. No one told me it was on the AM band. I didn’t even fucking know there was anything on the AM band but static and baseball broadcasts that had been reflecting back and forth off the moon for the last seventy years.
Liberals have almost every major media outlet on the planet. They have most networks, the near entirety of academia, tons of big papers, and almost all analysis programs. Conservatives have Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and AM radio. This is hardly a media coupe, and liberals really should just fucking get over it. And, if liberals really are so tolerant and non judgmental, I have to wonder at the viciousness of their attacks on people for simply doing what liberals have been able to do for decades: pick their most agreeable form of bullshit to listen to for personal affirmation. There is no difference in the end between Piers Morgan and Bill O’Reilly. Except of course, their ratings. Which is perhaps the real reason why liberals hate Fox News. It’s an ever present reminder that a significant portion of the country thinks they’re wrong, and is willing to say so out loud and in the open now. Fox represents a conservative interest in the world that liberals can no longer shame or shout down or intimidate. That’s got to chap their asses more than a little.
