Gordie Howe has died

TOLEDO, Oh. (WNWO) -- 'Mr. Hockey' has died at the age of 88, according to reports .

Gordie Howe, considered one of the greatest professional hockey players of all time, died Friday morning.

Details of his death and final days have not been released.

After suffering a stroke in 2014, Howe participated in a clinical trial utilizing Stemedica's stem cell products which resulted in significant improvement of his medical condition as reported by his family.

Over the last couple years, he had started visiting our local rink where my kids play. He would just hang around and watch practice, and then take pictures with all the kids. I actually ran into him at a grocery store about 6 months ago, and was surprised he was pushing his own cart. He was always with his son or grandson, of course, and wasn't very verbal, but he enjoyed being recognized and seeing his fans.

For me, seeing him was like seeing Babe Ruth or Red Grange: a legend come to life.

I heard Gretzy - talking about being in the Crowne Plaza in NYC with Gordie Howie and Ali came over and started talking with Gordie and - Gretz said "He was in awe by being in the company of 2 of the GOAT".....Uhm Wayne 3

'But all the honors and accolades pale in comparison to his greatest hockey achievement -- playing with his sons Mark and Marty, first with the Houston Aeros of the WHA and then in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers in Gordie's final season in 1979-80

"I always refer to that as my greatest accomplishment and excitement," Howe said of getting on the ice in a Houston Aeros uniform with his sons in 1973'
