Google just came out with some new spreadsheet software that you can upload and share with others. Check it out.

Creating spreadsheets

Create basic spreadsheets from scratch.
You can start from scratch and do all the basics, including changing the number format, sorting by columns, and adding formulas.
Upload your spreadsheet files.
Upload spreadsheets or worksheets from CSV or XLS format - all your formulas and formatting will come across intact.
Familiar desktop feel makes editing a breeze.
Just click the toolbar buttons to bold, underline, change the font, change the cell background color and more.

Sharing spreadsheets

Choose who can access your spreadsheets.
Just enter the email addresses of the people you want to share a given document, and then send them a message.
Share documents instantly.
People with whom you share a given spreadsheet can access it as soon as they sign in.
Edit with others in real time.
Multiple people can edit or view your spreadsheet at the same time as you - their names will appear in an on-screen chat window.

Storing spreadsheets

Edit from anywhere.
There's nothing to download; you access your spreadsheets from any computer with an Internet connection and a supported browser.
Never lose your work.
Online storage and auto-save mean you need not fear hard drive failures and power outages.
Easily save and export copies.
You can save your spreadsheets to your own computer in CSV, XLS and HTML formats.

It doesn't have all the advanced features of Excel, but you can bet your ass that Billy Gates is sweating.

thats cute and stuff, but the real users of excel use it for its macro purposes, so it automatically does calculations beyond the formulas, and if google spreadhseets dont have any macros, it wont be widely used for a long time.

for the average to above average user, i think this does most things excel does.
it's at least a good starting point, if you need to add in macros, you can always export the google spread sheet to excel and add in your macros.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

According to Britain's Guardian newspaper, when you compare the spreadsheet to "Writely [Google's online word processor], Google's existing blogging tool, Instant Messenger service, e-mail product, calendar and Web page creator, the spreadsheet application gives the company a full suite [that] can compete directly with Microsoft's best-selling Works and Office software."
OK, I'll give you Works, but Office? Puh-lease!
Google's own executives don't say they're competing with Microsoft Office. That's a good thing, because when you compare Writely and Google Spreadsheets to Word and Excel, it's not even close.
Make no doubt about it. Google kicks Microsoft's rump at some things. When it comes to search, there's no comparison. And, personally I'll take Gmail and the Google Calendar over Outlook any day of the week.
But all this hype about how Google is going to be taking Microsoft to some Silicon Valley fight club and laying it out cold is wishful thinking

I've been playing with it today.
I love that it updates in real time, a friend had the same sheet open and as I filled a box it updated immediately.

I didn't like how it didn't copy formulas from my own sheets I've copied over. If it does I haven't figured out how to make them work.
