I know at least 1 sportbook who already told their clerks that the will declare the complete ammount of salaries in order to pay all the taxes, is this a good sign? are they really trying to go legal in every way, in Costa Rica? are they the only ones? if someone knows somwthing please share

Ryder...

That alone would not be necessarily indicative of anything to me. I know of books that have been reporting 100% of employee salaries for years now.

I personally feel that is the right thing to do as it obviously benefits the employee short and long term.

What I think is a good sign is the fact that books are able to open bank accounts at other banks besides the Banco Nacional. Bank of Costa Rica for instance.

Tico,

"I personally feel that is the right thing to do as it obviously benefits the employee short and long term."

I think that basically I have to disagree with you, except that perhaps it creates greater job security knowing that the company you work for reports all activity to the government. Other than that, it doesn't really benifit the employee, short term you pay more taxes and net less, long term it doesn't really matter because in Costa Rica your retirement pension is based on your last 5 years of work. Given the average age of sportsbook clerks I doubt many of us will be retiring from this business here.

Sr. Muny,

I get your point, but IMO if they try to increase that much, that fast, books will threaten to leave, employees will protest and the government will renegociate like they did last year.

Kaya man....

Let me point out some short term benefits employees get out of something like this....

1. If you are dismissed from work, you are entitled to 100% severance compensation.

2. If you apply for a loan, and can provide an "orden patronal" that shows 100% of your earnings, chances are you will be approved.

3. If the company is entirely "legit" and "on the books", employees are entitled to sick days, paid vacations, holidays paid double if you work, paid once if you don't, and compensation in the event of disability.

Yes, we probably won't retire working for this industry, but don't overlook the short term benefits.

I definitely agree that CR will NOT be able to hike the tax as Sr. Muny suggests.

For those who may be interested, I can certainly help with incorporation in Belize or Curacao. Any jurisdiction really, but those places and CR is where I do most of my work.

I have noticed a lot of regulation in CR, particularly in terms of banking. I don't even take wagers, but just consult and do marketing, and even I get a headache from all the questions and paperwork.
