Wanted to chime in again after reading some of the other comments.
You must enter Mexico from the angle of you get what you pay for. You go to a credible resort, work within their network, you will be cool. Don't try to save cash by trying to do things on your own or work with a third party. Don't eat the local food from vendors (although my wife does and has never gotten sick, just has the stomach for it).
Pure Tourism, will have a great time. Some will say you over pay or should have done this or that, but in the end, you do the tour things with decent people, decent food, you and your family will enjoy yourselves.
Also, check with where you are staying and ask about functions for the kids (teenagers). When we went, had a couple teenagers and there where functions designed specifically for them. If i recall correctly, just tipping the bus driver (was a dedicated tour bus type, not the local shit) was the expense, other than what you spent there. One night it was at Senor Frogs and basically carved out a section for this group. This was a secured place that the kids (even my preteen) were able to dance and socialize while the parents hung back, had dinner, drank a beer, and such. Outsiders not allowed, everyone was wrist banned. It ended at 9:00 pm so they had to open that piece back to the general public. But it gave the kids a sense of "clubbing" with the parents being a part of it and being in an isolated section. So you had about 50 families with the teenage kids "partying" under their watchful eye. They danced and mingled with other kids their age. I think we went to 3 of these. They were at popular places such as Senor Frogs, Hard Rock Cafe etc.. so they felt like they were doing what the spring breakers do, which of course thye weren't.
Remember My daughter telling her friends she partied at Senor Frogs, Joe's Oyster Bar, Hard Rock Cafe......Very cool.
